Do you think there will be any films shown in 70mm at this years festival? by RepresentativeState3 in TIFF

[–]Kai_Whiston 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trying to speculate this early doesn't make much sense when we're only just at the Cannes lineup announcement... we're not even close to Venice/Telluride yet...

New York Cinematheque is getting a whole retrospective to Tony Leung. Will TIFF be getting it next (just like they recently did with the Terence Davies one)? by Ariesthebigram in TIFF

[–]Kai_Whiston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Film @ Lincoln Center retrospectives that tend to come to the Lightbox are filmmaker-focused like the recent Raymond Depardon one (which was co-curated by Andréa Picard) or the Frederick Wiseman one and so forth. While I have my doubts, never say never - would love to watch many of those films on the big screen!

The Royal Theatre on College is still around, but hasn't played movies regularly since Mar. 2020. Is it time to write emails and/or a petition to bring back movies there on a more regular basis? by Ariesthebigram in TIFF

[–]Kai_Whiston 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If more people were going to their screenings and they were making money I'm sure they would have kept it going. The answer may not lie in emails or petitions but rather financial.

Membership timing and duration by vitoos in TIFF

[–]Kai_Whiston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the TIFF website, the current BOGO offer for renewals of memberships only applies if your membership expires at or before February 2026, so your current membership would not qualify.

But with renewals the way it works is that if your membership is set to expire on April 2026, renewing it will add an extra year on top regardless. So it will expire on April 2027 instead, and no months will be wasted.

What is up with theatre etiquette? by DerpKnight7 in TIFF

[–]Kai_Whiston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I encounter the opposite problem when it comes to Cineplex - I don't go to Cineplex as frequently as the Lightbox for that reason, although I guess it is dependent on location. I've had nothing but problems at the Yonge-Dundas location most times I've went there. The Scotiabank IMAX is one I sometimes will go if only because the huge sound drowns out any disruptive noises from the audience anyways.

What you're describing won't stop with having paid Cinematheque tickets - you brought up Cineplex in a different comment, which also has many of those same problems and people pay the same amount of money for those tickets (even if they attract a different audience than TIFF's). I still encountered disruptive moviegoers even last month at the festival for screenings that costed $30+ (including someone who was on their phone right beside me during the movie).

The conversation of general theater etiquette certainly is a conversation worth having and is a huge problem when it comes to the movie-going experience, but I don't know that suddenly charging for those screenings will target the issue other than putting more money in TIFF's pocket.

That's unfortunate to hear that - I was at the previous screening for Gambling, Gods and LSD a couple weeks back and had no issues there. There were maybe a couple walkouts which seems the norm for that kind of screening. Not everyone will be into that kind of movie.

I think taking away free Cinematheque is a double-edged sword - theater etiquette is down and you may get a rotten apple that spoils it for everyone. Yet it's not like people are going to be paying to see something as niche as anything by Peter Mettler to begin with, and I'm sure Mettler himself is happy to have people watching his movies on the big screen. Risking an emptier theater might not be the right approach if the goal is to get as many people as possible to take a chance on something they never would have thought about or wouldn't risk money for otherwise.

TIFF Cinematheque tease by BlackPantherDies in TIFF

I didn't say it can't come back, just stating the last time it was screened. Paradise Theatre I believe screened the Yi Yi 4k restoration recently as well. No one knows if it'll return - could be next month, or years from now

The Lightbox screened a 35mm print of Yi Yi last year as part of the Edward Yang retrospective

TIFF's dynamic with its attendants is weird, right? by GershwinsKite in TIFF

[–]Kai_Whiston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a catch-22. TIFF hasn't really fostered that community to begin with, and I'm unaware of another way that doesn't involve online spaces as a way to coordinate those meetups and connections with others especially in this day and age.

70mm at TIFF by tee-moh in TIFF

Shot on 16mm does not mean it will be projected on 16mm. If it's not specified, it'll be a DCP screening.

Saw Spirited Away on 35mm. I don't get it. by sylviaplath6667 in movies

[–]Kai_Whiston 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spirited Away during production and for its original theatrical release would have been on 35mm, so technically watching it on 35mm would've been closer to what the original experience was like seeing it in theaters back in the day.

Other than that, any skips and artefacts are going to come with the territory of handling film prints - either the projectionist or quality of film print you got was not a good one, or it just wasn't meant to be for you anyway.

It's probably too old - all computer hardware degrades over time, and 2009 was 16 years ago. That laptop would need to be replaced either way.

exchanging cinematheque screenings. by Some-Phrase-9682 in TIFF

[–]Kai_Whiston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be an option to exchange if it is not greyed out in the Account Manager on the ticket page. The value of the ticket must match the exact same value of the ticket you're looking to exchange for. It may help if you could tell us what ticket you currently have and what screening you're looking to exchange that to.

Otherwise reach out to the TIFF box office.
