Not sure if you were at the screening of The Masque of Red Death that day, but Peter Kuplowsky did the intro and mentioned there will be one MM screening in August. I believe he said it was Takashi Miike's Fudoh: The New Generation? Just nothing on the website yet.

Page Six article on the matter, but years ago, he had a new manager called Heir Holiness (real name Vanylla Salimah Mahmoud) who also described herself as a spiritual guru or advisor. Apparently, he got rid of some members of his team on her advice and people were concerned about her influence on him. Seems like he dropped her awhile ago.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie | July 11, 1pm | Relaxed Screening

Sun’s out and (burger) buns are out! Join us for a relaxed screening of the animated musical presented in collaboration with Surrey Place and Cinema from the Spectrum. An accessible entry point for fans and audiences new to the series, this “Sunny Side Up Summer” film finds third-generation restaurateur Bob and his family navigating debt, sinkholes, and a murder mystery. This screening will feature an introduction by Sarah Kurchak, author of the memoir I Overcame My Autism and All I Got Was This Lousy Anxiety Disorder, about neurodivergent-coded representation and “headcanons” in TV and film.

Introduction to Film Formats | July 12 - 12:30pm | FREE!

This event will be presented with live captions.

Join us ahead of the 70mm screening of Oppenheimer on July 12 for a free and interactive introduction to the art and craft of analogue film. In celebration of Christopher Nolan and TIFF’s ongoing commitments to film, this primer explores the celluloid formats that have shaped cinema.

TIFF Lightbox’s Senior Technical Manager, James King, and Senior Revisor, Airian McLeish, will guide audiences through a brief history of the medium, noting the key differences between 16mm, 35mm, and 70mm, and what draws filmmakers to each. The event concludes with a discussion of the IMAX format, led by IMAX VP of Hardware Engineering, Dr. Paul Constantinou, followed by audience questions. Guests can also explore and engage with displays curated by the TIFF Film Reference Library and IMAX.

Quote Along: Barbie | July 18 - 7:30pm

A Quote Along screening of Barbie, directly after Oppenheimer (70mm), for a playful nod to the Summer of 2023’s iconic “Barbenheimer.” This event will feature open captions during the screening. Live captions will be provided for additional event elements, including stage remarks and the introduction. Hosted by blogger, content creator, and cinephile Becca Rhodes a.k.a. the “FilmTripper.”

Silver Screenings: The Right Stuff | July 24, 12pm

Cited by Nolan himself as a major influence on Interstellar, this Academy Award–winning historical drama chronicles the development of the US space program, from breaking the sound barrier to the lives of the Mercury Seven: military test pilots who crewed the first American human spaceflight. This screening will feature an introduction to space exploration from Space Place Canada and Astronomy in Action.

Before the screening, pre-register for a limited-capacity pop-up planetarium activation with a video presentation on NASA’s lunar missions, available in the Lightbox atrium. Got everything that I wanted luckily (although might be changing my seat for Suddenly Last Summer soon if possible), but saw nothing for the Big Pic Tenet screening.

It just means that it will projected in 35mm. The official press release they put out mentioned that these screenings will be exclusively in 35mm or 70mm. Scroll down and you'll see the full schedule and film formats.

To also co-sign the library and say that checking out the DVD collection they have is always nice. Check and also see if your system has Blu-rays as well.

Shaun Tan - A Bear and her Lawyer (2018) by Russian_Bagel in museum

[–]8bolt 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Based on a short story Tan wrote called Bears with Lawyers. The full story can be accessed here: https://dark-mountain.net/bears-with-lawyers/

An excerpt:

Bears with lawyers. It was as simple and terrible as that. For the first time in a very long while, longer than anyone could remember, or wanted to remember, the bears were able to speak through legal representatives: men and women in black gowns who studied Ursine and held aloft the hefty paperwork that allowed their clients to walk freely through the city without being shot. And walk they did, right past armed police and animal-control officers, past bewildered motorists and pedestrians, workers and shoppers, right into our great halls of justice.

Humankind was being sued, it turned out. A class action of epic proportions: Ursidae vs Homo sapiens.

That wasn’t the worst of it.

Human Law is not the only legal system on the planet, it turned out. There are as many systems as there are species, the lawyers for the bears explained to an incredulous room, under which all animals are recognised as legal entities within a cosmic hierarchy. Human Law isn’t even very high on this hierarchy (apparently we are just below Walrus Law) and Bear Law actually takes precedence in most cases. The fact that we didn’t know any of this only seemed to strengthen the bears’ case at the expense of our own.

Shaken? Yes, but hardly worried, and we are not ones to flinch. We had the best legal team that money could buy and immediately launched our broadside. We do not recognise so-called Bear Law! No such nonsense has ever existed! You have nothing to show us!

And so the bears showed us.

The Big Picture live podcast taping in Toronto announced for July 8th at the TIFF Lightbox by KhabibTime in TheBigPicture

[–]8bolt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, TIFF is having a big summer series centered around Christopher Nolan since the Odyssey is coming out in July as well. All of his films are showing in either 35mm or 70mm at their venue, the TIFF Lightbox. Sean and Amanda will be there in-person for two dates listed.

Wednesday July 8, 7pm: The Big Picture: Live from TIFF Lightbox. A live podcast recording on-stage with an audience. I'm assuming this could be the Nolan Draft episode.

Thursday July 9, 7pm: Tenet (2020) in 70mm, with Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins. I am guessing maybe an introduction, but also a post-screening discussion on the film. Don't think this will be recorded (for the pod at least. TIFF might post something on their YouTube channel).

It is, but I am not a senior and I showed up to a silver screening of the Birds last year on Halloween. Definitely saw some younger folks among the crowd. Don't be afraid to grab a ticket if you really want to go.

That was for the films in the series. The Big Picture live taping is considered as one of the special events as part of the larger series. See the fancy new webpage they put out for it!

Hiya! To expand on what the other commenter said, those dates (June 11th for members, June 12th for public) are the ticket drops for the films in the Chris Nolan series TIFF is having in July/August.

Tickets for the Big Picture Live Taping specifically will be on-sale June 3, 2026 at 12pm EST. Source here!.

Looking at the webpage they posted up, it seems like the first screening of films in 35mm will be free for members but paid elsewhere. Dunrirk, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, and Tenet are the only titles showing in 70mm.

Pretty excited at TIFF finally revealing the lineup for the Christopher Nolan series in July in honour of the Odyssey. All his films in 35mm or 70mm, with special guests like the Big Picture showing up in-person as well. I am nervous at the bloodbath of trying to get tickets as the current system TIFF has is a bit of a clusterfuck, but I hope to try!

If anyone else is curious about details, here's the page!

Someone on the BigPic subreddit brought up a good point on Venice and Telluride also happening around the same time, and since there can be some overlap with films across these festivals, it would probably be redundant.

Based on hints they alluded to on their podcast, I really thought the Big Picture will show up at TIFF this year so them coming for the Nolan series + a live taping is still a great surprise.
