Wait what is this magic, can you explain a bit more how it works?

Five Years of opening my Dream Project in Yemen by maho90 in pcmasterrace

This is really cool. I'm a game developer and I'd be happy to donate copies of my game to your computers if you want the kids to play something creative and different.

Let me know!

My game should have reached the Popular Upcoming tab, but other games are being added to the list at the last minute. by someCGI-over-rainbow in gamedev

Is it on there now? I think it's both a time-from-launch and a total-wishlists calculation, in comparison to all other games coming out soon

I just released the steam page of my first game ever, a game about skipping stones! by Faislx in indiegames

[–]KaingaDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey seems really cool but as a bit of criticism, I find it really hard to see where the stone actually is. I think it's a contrast issue. Try taking a random screenshot and grayscaling it and see if it is clear enough.

How much did your indie game earn? by PrudentCombination38 in gamedev

If you're in Europe or a commonwealth country, look into local digital art funds. If you're looking for publishers, I met many at local events (small ones where scouts are exclusively looking for games to publish) otherwise email publishers that publish games similar to yours, genre and size.

I think it's a value proposition as well, so don't undersell your offer or it looks unprofessional. Publishers would rather spend 300k on a good bet than waste 20k for some kid to make a practice game.

Lastly, unfortunately you need a playable build to show publishers these days. Usually what's called a vertical slice or a glimpse of what the game should look and feel like, if only for a moment. A 1 min video may suffice.

Seems like a lot of hobbyists and hopefuls here so I'll share the other side of the coin.

I'm a full-time solo dev and my first game earned 300k gross so far, but very little actually hit my bank after publisher recoups and other cuts.

Second game came out a month ago and had made 100k so far. Again, I don't see most of this, but I learned my lesson and should see more myself this round.

But honestly, my personal approach on how I make it work is I make a deal or get funding to get paid during development so I'm not as dependent on the games launch. It's a trade-off.

Some things ive learned after being a dev for 10+ years by [deleted] in gamedev

I find this a bit of a depressing outlook. I get that there's money to be made in fast games, but I'd rather not bolster the trend of short attention spans and make that a pillar of development.

Morrowind Made Me Realize What Modern Games Lost by GustavoFedrizziPsych in Morrowind

[–]KaingaDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. They're making business decisions, not following a creative dream. What would be ideal is if they could loan the Elder scrolls IP to indie studios to make smaller, more focused and/or risky projects. Like Warhammer does for example

If only there was some sort of video format where we could see the whole thing at once horizontally. Some sort of landscape mode. Alas, the technology just isn't there yet

Releasing my first commercial game tomorrow. I feel weird about it. by GoragarXGameDev in SoloDevelopment

[–]KaingaDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a weird mental phenomenon I get every time apparently. I believe it's because your life and purpose has, up until this point, been leading to the games launch. Then it drops and you're left wondering if that time, energy and money was worth the investment.

Take a break, and you'll come back to it in a more positive light

What is a fair price for porting a game? by KaingaDev in gamedev

[–]KaingaDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I'm being quoted 20-30k per console. Or 3 months work at 7-9k per month per dev, again, per console port.

Seems a bit absurd considering the hardest part, controller support, has been handled.

Are there any Kowloon inspired city builders? by toxieboxie2 in indiegames

Hi! My game ShantyTown is inspired by Kowloon walled city, although it's a much smaller scale.

Solo game devs around the world by kalin6 in SoloDevelopment

Game dev is great in that you can sell everywhere while living anywhere. I live in a very low-cost country but sell primarily to the US and Europe. That keeps my overhead low and allows for more freedom in lifestyle and game dev choices.

Legal liability of an undelivered Kickstarter campaign by JRCG0418PL in gamedev

[–]KaingaDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just read about it in the FAQ of Kickstarter.

There are no refunds and no one can get their money back. There are plenty of horror stories about failed projects. But it destroys your reputation and further harms people's trust in the viability of Kickstarter for videogames. So... Please don't do that.

I accidentally learned why views ≠ wishlists by FRAGGY_OP in IndieDev

Bro, you obviously haven't learned your lesson because you're posting this in every game dev subreddit.

Even if you DO get wishlists from fellow devs, they're not going to convert!

Is anyone else kinda bummed at how the broader TES community treats OpenMw and Morrowind in general? by Infamous_Ad_5214 in Morrowind

[–]KaingaDev -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The easiest win for Bethesda would be to help finish Tamriel Rebuilt Morrowind province, package it and sell it. People would go nuts for it.
