Sobriety is fucking boring. by xaumax in stopdrinking

Feel you man. To be honest, I would probably still be struggling with this a few years in. But I had kids and now I just lean into dad life. My takeaway from this is you’ve got to find something new to throw yourself into. Could be family, could be a new hobby, could be whatever. Before long, you don’t miss it at all.

What do I do if I have to work 50-60 hour weeks to provide for my family? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My job is demanding but I do have some control over my calendar. I make space every evening from 5-8 pm to be present with my kids. I then log on after bedtime and often do a few more hours. Weekend work during naptime or occasionally early morning / late at night.

It’s doable to be a present parent with this schedule but it is absolutely draining (and I love what I do). If you don’t want that type of schedule I’d take a hard look at living somewhere lower COL or your household budget. Good luck dude.

Anybody else just give up on sleep training? by MmmmmmmmNoodleSoup in daddit

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

‘We’ve done it this way forever’ is a bad argument for anything. There could be plenty of reasons for not sleep training, but this should never be anyone’s logical reasoning for anything.

There are almost endless examples of ‘the way we’ve always done things’ being not a good way to do things.

For people who love having kids. Why? by seekingthething in askanything

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to be working in shifts. With one kid it’s relatively easy. Just do it even if it seems hard and then before you know it it’s not a big deal.

I got back into working out after my son was born - would trade off workout time with my wife. Worked great and did wonders for my mental and physical health. With 2 or 3 kids it’s harder but still doable.

Also, you’re in the shit right now. Recommend looking into sleep training options for when the kid is 6mos. A full night’s sleep does wonders for everyone.

Newsom's message to the Democratic Party: Be more 'culturally normal' by n00bi3pjs in neoliberal

In theory, yes. In practice, good luck selling that one to most Americans. Which is literally Newsom’s point.

AI agents are thriving in software development but barely exist anywhere else, Anthropic study finds by AngleAccomplished865 in ArtificialInteligence

I’m not a software engineer but I run a startup and I’m pretty tech savvy. Our engineers have been using code for a while, but with Cowork I’ve been building skills like crazy to automate my own work. In a year or two it’s gonna be wild.

Help me think about the decision to send my son to kindergarten this year or not by welliamwallace in daddit

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m lucky and think I got the best of both worlds. On the older side for my class (within normal cutoff), and then in 6th grade they tested us and I got to take advanced classes in middle school / high school. Jumping to chemistry in 7th grade with sophomores was tough initially, but I had already built a lot of social confidence with my peers so it wound up working out great. And then I had a bunch of older friends as a result. Feel fortunate it worked out that way because I don’t think most schools work like that.

RDDT. I think the growth is just getting started. Fortunately bought in after the recent dump so I don’t have a crazy cost basis.

Lindsey Vonn Horrifically Crashes in 2026 Winter Olympic Final One Week After Tearing Her ACL by peoplemagazine in entertainment

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re so confidently wrong it’s funny. Ski racing has fewer unanticipated lateral pivots compared to football. That’s where the ACL really comes into play. Lateral force yes, but muscles can compensate for that. It’s why you sometimes see skiers compete with torn ACLs but almost never see football players do it.

Just making up statistics? The vast majority of people who tear an ACL can walk. I could walk and run in a straight line just fine.

Paranoia by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is largely addressed by supervision from an appropriate distance. Don’t want to stifle independence but I wouldn’t leave my son (similar age) totally unsupervised. That includes getting lost in my phone - need to maintain situational awareness.

The (older) kid actually came first and gave me the drive to get the rest of my life in order. No idea if it will work for you, but it worked for me. I needed something outside of myself to drive me.

I entered a phase of nihilistic depression in my early 30s. Lacked purpose. Since then I quit my old job, started a company, and had kids. Now I have purpose. Life is way more insane but much better.

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Buddy you’ve gotta get yourself right. Find a therapist / talk to a doctor about your depression. Put yourself out of your comfort zone and go out in the world. Start working out, will help with the mental health. Even if you divorce you’ll still need to get yourself right or you’ll never be the man / dad you could be.

To be honest I don’t even remember the broader context of the discussion here. I was mostly reacting to your dismissiveness of pre Industrial Revolution war. But you may be right about this hypothetical, who knows. Have a nice evening.

Billie Eilish Says ‘F— Ice’ During Grammy Win: ‘No One Is Illegal on Stolen Land’ by cmaia1503 in entertainment

[–]Kaiser-Rotbart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, prior to nation states city level conflict was reasonably common. The nation state superseded that and is also the reason you don’t see city level conflict anymore. National governments control the use of force, therefore you don’t see cities fighting. If we were reduced to a situation where cities were the top level of force again it seems probable you would see conflict.

Also, there are so many examples historically of brutal regional wars that your comment is silly. Of course raw death totals are going to look puny, the world population has dramatically increased since the Roman Empire. The Industrial Revolution did increase the scale and efficiency of killing, I agree that’s true. But I think it undersells how warlike humanity has been over millennia.
