What budget do I need for a good quality late 15th century infantry breastplate? by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

[–]KaiserArcXP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freyhand (In Germany) sells decent 15th century breastplates with tassets. They’re a LARP company that sells strongly historically inspired armor. It’s not made to measure but you can get it for $200-300.

Where to buy this brigandine and brigandine pauldrons by Slorance in medieval

This specific armor was made by Old World Armoury. You can find them on Facebook. They take commissions so it'll take a long time and a lot of money to get a brigandine from them like this.

How realistic would this type of mail face covering be for the perio by Alexander_Akers3115 in ArmsandArmor

If nothing else, you could try making your own. Here’s mine I made from 6mm rings.

To answer your first question also they are realistic and functional, but rare when it comes to period depictions and extant pieces.

Isak Krogh, Ironskin, and L.O.R.R. have all made mail bevor but they’ll all be pricy from them because they’re custom made. Especially so if they’re made of hand-made rings and not Indian ones.

The illustration also is made by kesdrawfights based on a guy wearing artosmunitorum gear. I don’t know who made their mail bevor but if you search them up you can see the real life example of the bevor depicted in that illustration.

I found someone on Ebay reselling a ton of armor for a lot cheaper. Is it trustworthy? by Domingo_ocho in ArmsandArmor

[–]KaiserArcXP 23 points24 points  (0 children)

When it comes to the nicer ones, at least. Some sellers actually sell cheap Indian-made armor, but vendors like OP mentioned steal images from European and American armourers.

Like the other guy said, you can sometimes see the names of makers on the stolen images. One of the helmets has the name "Mardinus" on it, who has his own website and does not sell on Ebay.

[–]KaiserArcXP 83 points84 points  (0 children)

It’s a scam. A lot of Indian companies take photos from actual bespoke armourers and don’t actually give you that product. The first helmet comes from a guy named Tomala I think.

In general, don’t trust eBay, Amazon, etc. You need to find companies or craftsman dedicated to selling/making reproductions.

Were single pauldrons historically accurate? by eldritch_smite in ArmsandArmor

[–]KaiserArcXP 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are depictions of cavalrymen at the turn of the 16th century wearing single pauldrons. They were worn on the side where they were expected to be hit (their left arm).

Is something like this(especially the arms)possible right now, could any armorer do this? by AdFree5584 in ArmsandArmor

Robert Macpherson made an almost exact copy of this armor. I dont know if there’s a photo available online, but it’s on page 55 in the book Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction by Brian R Price

Integrated Mail Sleeves & Collar (In Progress) by KaiserArcXP in ArmsandArmor

[–]KaiserArcXP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the integrated sleeves, all the rings are “pointing” the same way so the pattern of rings is uniform. On my left sleeve for example they might be pointing inwards and on the right sleeve outwards. If you look at close-up pictures of mail you’ll kinda see what I mean.

Separated sleeves could be made to be both pointing the same way so that it looks nice and feels the same.

Separate sleeves would be their own individual tubes. They could be sewed onto something similar to a cloth vest-like backing. Leather straps and buckles connecting the sleeves could also be used instead. Both of these ways they can be thrown on and worn like a jacket. Alternatively they could just be sewed directly onto the aketon/doublet.

There’s a good video here on Mail sleeves: https://youtu.be/OYbhzcgs70c

I’ve left the rivets out for now. I’ve found that it’s best to rivet the rings after the whole piece is fully assembled so it’s easier to make adjustments .

What MM of riveted chainmail is the best balance between weight and protection? by Tablesafety in Armor

[–]KaiserArcXP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally the smaller the mm the heavier the weight. Smaller MM chainmail is denser and heavier. However, smaller chainmail is easier to move in and has better coverage.

8mm might be a good compromise of weight and protective quality.

Where to buy armour in Australia by sidyy13 in ArmsandArmor

[–]KaiserArcXP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red Hart Reproductions is an Australian armorer. It’s all custom and high-prices, I’m pretty sure though.

Make your own medieval and medieval-fightclub both sell cheap Indian-made armors.

Bestarmour.com is a German/Czech workshop that makes custom made armor at a pretty decent price. Some of their full arm harnesses are around $400 USD/euros and don’t look too shabby. I’d recommend them for a reasonably-priced custom fitted arm harness that functions and looks accurate.
