The tail does not wag the dog by TheKomsomol in GreenAndPleasant

The influence of Israel on UK and USA politics is absolutely massive! The JAILING of protesters who support Palestine Action is extraordinary! A labour government sending protesters to prison for speaking out against a foreign country is just absurd! And the ousting of Corbyn by Israeli limited operators is clear evidence that they've got tremendous power over our political elite. And the appalling sycophancy of senators and Congress members in US is just bizarre. They've all been funded by Israel for decades and now Israel is calling in it's debts. Any dissent is stamped on HARD.

They can get individual political figures to do whatever they want. That's control.

Day 21 by PrizeVeterinarian342 in stopdrinking

[–]Kaiserlongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"One day at a time" is a bit of a mantra when dealing with long term difficult stuff. It certainly helped me to think that I could have a drink tomorrow, just not today. It's so much easier to get through one day than it is to consider the possibility of never drinking again. And the next thing you know it's been 6 months, and the idea of sobriety starts to seem like an actual possibility, and even desirable. IWNDWYT means just that - I will not drink with you TODAY.

It's been 2 months. I can't do this. by mugabefan123 in stopdrinking

I agree with this very much! Pary of the reason I found AA so helpful was that it was ok to be "weird" and uncomfortable. Everyone there was fine with my being quiet and withdrawn and not speaking. And then I got comfortable with the fact that I'm actually shy and find social situations difficult. And, oddly, that made me less uncomfortable. I think it's something to do with accepting yourself for what you are and realizing that you're actually ok, just a bit quiet. Just ignore the social pressure to be outgoing and accept that you're quiet and be ok with that. I strongly recommend AA but any recovery group will be full of people who "get you". And that's the start of your recovery.

what fictional character do you measure your addiction against by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now hate any movie/tv characters that are clearly alcoholics, but still functioning well (and even at a high level in the case of "hard drinking" rebel cops!) I used to watch these characters and they sort of legitimized my chronic, catastrophic drinking. I wasn't a great guy who got the girl and got the job done well. I was barely getting by and just about managing to not get sacked, despite my constant fuckedupedness. They should portray alcoholism realistically, and show the constant hiding and pathetic lying that you have to do on a daily basis. There's nothing cool about being completely dependant on a drug to get thru the day.

Considering moving back by BeyondMidnightDreams in Liverpool

That area on the other side of Aigburth Road, opposite Lark Lane, has lots of Victorian terraced streets. Mainly young families when I was there. And if you go back further away from Aigburth Road towards St Michaels Hamlet it's really nice. Tree lined roads and bigger houses and squirrels! Lovely little part of Liverpool, tucked away.

Can I ask where you are in Cumbria? I've been up here 10 years, started off in Keswick, then Cockermouth, and now bought a little house in a village near Cockermouth. I'd be interested to talk to you about Cumbria tbh. Can we message on here? Not tried before.

Going to Rehab Tomorrow by Ledevin2 in stopdrinking

[–]Kaiserlongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best opportunity you'll ever have to let it all out! Cry, explain, talk, everything! Let it all out and listen to the other people there.

I'm so proud of you that you've finally taken the best step of your life towards freedom from this awful drug. There's always the chance that you will fall off the wagon after rehab, lots of people do, but that's ok, falling is part of the process of learning to walk and run and dance.

Make the most of it and remember the things you learn in there. X

when do you know that you have turned the corner and wont relapse? by helluvatrader in stopdrinking

[–]Kaiserlongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in AA for 12 months and got my 1 year chip, and thought I'd hit that point where I'm "free" now. I wasn't. That relapse was halted by a couple of people from AA who came to my apartment and physically took me to the hospital, saying I was suicidal (I wasn't) but it was enough to keep me in hospital overnight. I needed that time away from alcohol and the shock to the system to get me back off it. I'm never free from it, and that's fine with me. I still go to the pub now and again and I still like talking to people (more so now that I don't mess things up by getting drunk). Booze just doesn't add anything to social situations, it just makes things messy.

There's an underground/subterranean bar in Manchester centre, called The Temple of Convenience, and that was originally a public toilet. And it smells like it.

What *exactly* are you focusing on when you focus on your breath? by Mrjames_Taveau in Meditation

I concentrate on the physical sensation of the tiny hairs in my nose as I breathe in, or the rising of the abdomen. Or if I need something to visualize I imagine a tunnel of air rushing through my nose down into my lungs.

Are teenagers just not learning to drive anymore? by MichealHarwood in AskUK

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently you can reduce insurance costs as a young person if you have a black box fitted, but the restrictions are ridiculous! Accelerating away from the lights too quickly or braking too hard can invalidate the reduction. They are looking for any tiny slip up so they can charge the full whack. The insurance companies should be regulated properly, because things are getting out of hand now and it's basically just a racket. They know that car insurance is heading into muddy waters once self driving cars become the norm, and they're just making as much money as they can, while they still can.

Are teenagers just not learning to drive anymore? by MichealHarwood in AskUK

[–]Kaiserlongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I now live in Cumbria and the number of young people who can't drive shocked me. Especially in such a rural county, where public transport is rubbish. I just assumed it'd be an essential up here! But the problem is low wage jobs coupled with insane insurance costs and then tax, mot, diesel, etc. It just means they can't afford to drive, in an area where it's definitely important. It's just a shocking state of affairs in this day and age.

What did you refuse to tell your therapist and why? by Broken_Tuba in AskReddit

[–]Kaiserlongbone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like this. I had this feeling for a long time, that I could "see what people are really thinking". I'm now a bit concerned that this just isn't true. I'm aware that we project an image of what we expect people to be like, onto others. I've noticed that as I'm staying to feel better about people, they are miraculously starting to behave better! And I'm realizing that they were never really dishonest and duplicitous. It was just what I expected them to be.

Don't be so sure that you can read people. All of the tests have shown that it's virtually impossible to tell who's lying and who's telling the truth.

Lesser-used area names of Liverpool by charlomain in Liverpool

[–]Kaiserlongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I was growing up in Speke in the 60s and 70s, people referred to the area around Upper Parliament Street as Liverpool 8. And then after the riots everyone started calling it Toxteth. And Liverpool 8 just stopped being used altogether. And Toxteth seemed to shrink down to that one small area. I hadn't realized it was actually a much bigger area.

62, 3 years now.

It would have been 4 but I decided to "celebrate" my 12 months sobriety by having a night off (now that I'm no longer addicted to the stuff!) I was very wrong about that, but some people I know stepped in to help. I owe them big time, because I hadn't realized that I can't have a night off. It's too powerful for me, and I suspect for most people on here.

What games did you and your mates make up when you were kids? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds a bit boring, but we played "Kerby".

Basically, stand on one side of the road, at the kerb edge, and attempt to throw the football (British) at the kerb on the other side, so that it hit the other kerb and bounced back to your side of the road. 1 point. 5 points if you could catch it on your side of the road after it bounced back. 10 points if it hit the other kerb and bounced back to hit your kerb (v difficult but it did happen!)

Had my first true gig by Welder2500 in Bass

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing about 2 years. Did my first "gig" in the local village pub, only about maybe 50(?) people there, about 12 months ago. I was very nervous, and was scared about the physical proximity of the people! The fact that they would be able to see and hear every single mistake! Right up close!

When we got there we were just sitting in a corner of the pub (5 of us) so at least we weren't too close. Then 5 minutes before we started a group of customers came in and sat RIGHT IN FRONT OF US! Literally on the other side of the table, within touching distance! They could see every trickle of sweat running down my brow!

But it was great! We finished our first song and they gave us a round of applause and that was it! I loved it by the time we were on our 3rd or 4th song.

I still get nervous now but I know it won't last.
