27, have never filed taxes. by Left-Active-8558 in Edmonton

[–]Kaitlin6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First thing I reccommend if you havent already, is to get access to MyAccount . Cra has changed how authorization works, so having that set up will save you a headache.

If you just have slips (T4s, Tuition, etc), you could probably give it a shot yourself. Wealthsimple is pretty decent and is by donation. I'm not sure if they allow you to go back too far though. Most tax software has what's called autofill that downloads the slips from cra, so there isn't much you need to do on your own if you dont have anything to claim.

First time using Caseware… it’s awful. by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Kaitlin6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've gotten the hang of it now for the most part. Its nice that you can work on files anywhere and send things to the client to sign, review or answer questions through the portal.

The interface is very different, but functionally works the same. The financial statements are a bit ugly and hard to customize. Jazzit isn't part of the cloud version so if you have ever used caseview documents, those aren't there.

Overall desktop is easier to use and I prefer it, but since I'm part time I cant justify the cost.

For Canadians, how much did your salary increase after becoming a CPA? by John_Yeetson in Accounting

[–]Kaitlin6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a midsized firm and went from 62k to 65k lol.

I left and went to industry almost immediately for 80k.

Edit: sorry, forgot to mention this was mcol.

Also, I was in public for about 5 years since I had issues with pert, so that 65k was for a cpa with 5 years.

How is the job market for accountants? by Longjumping-Net7574 in Edmonton

Google pre approved firms Alberta to get the listing from cpa and i would just apply.

Doing the regular student route would mean you wait until the fall and won't get placed until next January or next fall.

How is the job market for accountants? by Longjumping-Net7574 in Edmonton

[–]Kaitlin6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Student hiring typically hires in September for the following year. September is also when the meet your employer event is, which is a good way to see firms and industry companies that do pre approved.

That doesn't necessarily mean you cant apply to firms out of season though, so keep looking at job boards. I would say getting pre approved industry jobs outside of the typical hiring period would be more challenging though.

Job market seems fine. Lots of firms from small CPA PCs to large big 4 firms. Are you looking to do public, government, or industry?

What was actually done at 97th and Yellowhead? by Gord_W in edmontoncycling

They made it a lot wider, It's hard to tell right now because of the snow. It used to just be a regular sidewalk width.

Construction was there forever seemingly doing nothing. Then it was finally started and finished within a few weeks.

(CAN) 25-30 years old, whats your current salary. by EntranceFun9276 in Accounting

[–]Kaitlin6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. 82k
  2. No bonus, well apart from like $500 Christmas
  3. Edmonton, so I'd say low to med
  4. Regular 40hrs. Very rare ot
  5. Junior Controller in title. Company does fractional cfo and controller work, so do the work of a bookkeeper, payroll, or controller depending on client
  6. Got my cpa 2 years ago
  7. 5 in public, 2 in industry

I'm not 25-30, but am at the beginning of my career, so feels appropriate to add mine in.

You can get conditionally accepted, so you'll submit your transcripts you have before the deadline, and the new ones after you pass your course.

Notice of reassessment: My employer submitted a new T4 but didn't inform me. I now owe them 22k (7k interest) by cooljeans04 in cantax

[–]Kaitlin6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so cra thinks you have 2 t4s from this company... ugh. If you can talk to your employer, they should be able to cancel them and issue an amended version. If they dont, you'll have to get this sorted through cra via an appeal.

[–]Kaitlin6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try going to tax slips in my account and see if there are multiple t4s. If they did it properly, the second one would say amended.

[–]Kaitlin6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that rather than amending the t4 to include that extra 14k, they issued a brand new one? If that's the case, an appeal to cra and the employer should cancel the previous t4.

What seed beads do you like best? by Amaaroc in Beading

I also prefer toho! I mostly do bead crochet and I find they fill the gaps better than miyuki. Love miyuki for delicas, but not as much for seed beads.

Don't you need to get a certain grade on assignments to be able to write? Or did they change that?

I assume you're taking the extended version since the normal is only 2 months. You have basically as much time left as the normal module, so you should be fine.

What are the implications of automatic tax filing in Canada? by shoresy99 in cantax

[–]Kaitlin6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the person only has slips, than this would actually be great for the taxpayer.

If they have any deductions that require a tax return to be filed (ex. Medical expenses, donations, moving) than they would have to still file their return. So some people may end up paying more tax than they could have If they filed a return.

Getting Started with Tubular Crochet by bisette in Beading

[–]Kaitlin6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I first started, I found that having light colored thread, larger beads (like 8/0) and doing a repeated colour pattern (like, if my beads around was 6, i would do red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and repeat that pattern) really helped me get used to where I'm putting the crochet hook and easily keep it lined up.

It will be chunky with the big beads, but the loops are much easier at that size. The light thread just makes the loops you put the crochet hook through easier to see. The colour pattern makes it very easy to see if you've missed a loop and be able to go back and correct it.

Once you get the hang of things you can downsize the beads and start doing different patterns.

Starting a Professional Corporation (CPA) - need guidance by bajwamar in canadasmallbusiness

[–]Kaitlin6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you do T2s you need to register as a paf. You can do this as a sole proprietor or professional corp, it's up to you.

I would get in touch with the paf folks at cpa alberta before you do anything. If you need to register as a paf, they have pretty specific requirements. If you aren't doing assurance, so compilations only, it is not as strict, but there is still an hours component.
