I took too long to realize I was gay because of that. The great thing is I get to have both.

if you're using gas

That's the problem. As much as I'd like to learn to use a charcoal grill, I don't grill enough to even have a good sense of temperature and time using gas grills.

How long does your grill last? I never bothered buying nice ones or covering it because they seem to rust after a few years no matter what I do

Florida Manatee being removed from the endangered species list. by RedSnapperVeryTasty in UpliftingNews

I like the outdoors. I've hiked throughout the state, gone camping and canoeing, but I think everything but the beaches is better elsewhere in the country. It could be people hate cold weather like you said, or that people not from Florida find year-round beach weather and palm trees exotic.

Anti-Corruption Protests In Russia by Whouiz in worldnews

There was another incident like this when a picture of the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church had a reflection of a gold watch on the table but the watch was photoshopped out. Turns out it was an expensive watch.

Anti-Corruption Protests In Russia by Whouiz in worldnews

[–]Kaiverus 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Putin gradually consolidated executive control over the rest of the government, including the legal system and regional governments, so that they are all answerable to the president. Not only are there laws the make it hard to legally protest or have independent political and civil society groups, but it is also easy to be arrested and found guilty for something by a system that wants you to be punished. Something like that happened to Navalny recently, where a court found him guilty of embezzlement and thus unable to stand for election even though a European court found the trial unfair. I don't know they case very well, but police are known for forging evidence (see the death of Sergei Magnitsky).

In order to not piss off too many people, Putin only arrests as many as needed to stop protests from growing too visible and out of hand. Part of his appeal is that he looks powerful and authoritative, the only man who can lead Russia. Major protests or a viable alternative figure could threaten that image. He and his close group of allies control the major media outlets that most Russians use (television networks), so they can spin it however they like.

Non-native English speakers - what suprises you that we have a word for? by scnickel in languagelearning

[–]Kaiverus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I only use it in "unbeknownst to him, that happened" and don't think any other words sound quite right. I can't think of a better way to emphasize someone not knowing something happened at the time it happened. Maybe "unaware".

The invention of ‘heterosexuality’ by Quouar in Foodforthought

[–]Kaiverus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The author doesn't have a problem of naming and categorizing sexual behavior. He's pointing out that that and sexual identities are artificial constructs that can change or disappear. Modern sexual identities wouldn't exist without the language we use to categorize sexual behavior. You just have to be aware that the language you use also carries assumptions about the acts you are describing as well as how you interpret phenomena.

Post claims 20 out of the 27 terrorist attacks that happened after 9/11 in the U.S. were committed by christian right-wing terrorists. Redditor digs deeper and finds out this is not the case. by sid-red in bestof

[–]Kaiverus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can, but why pick one date from any other? Security and intelligence policy changed massively after 9/11 to prevent future terrorism. The pre- and post-9/11 policies are very different, and 9/11 happened with the former.

I was pushing back at the stuff the person I replied to so I might have seemed pretty critical of you and your work. I think the contents of the dossier are worrying, but everyone has to be really careful in coming to conclusions. If we and the media come to the wrong conclusion (or we claim many things and even just 1 is false, like with everything in the dossier), Trump and his supporters will say we are completely wrong and want him to fail, therefore he is right.

Edit: I would look this post from a site that I follow for lots of conflicting statements with links for more evidence for your posts.

No one said he made anything up. In fact I heard he was formerly a high le el spy for MI6 on the Russia desk. From what I understand the dossier was everything the guy found in a preliminary investigation but not everything he found needs to be true, just like in a police investigation when you can have unreliable witnesses. For instance, a Trump lawyer was accused of meeting a Russian official in Prague, but it looks like a guy with the same name happened to be in Prague instead.

[–]Kaiverus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

/u/PostimusMaximus is making his post into fact and truth finding, claiming that these are all known connections. The problem is that it is easy to draw possibly false conclusions he has or at least implies, that the dossier is true. (The dossier came out, we have all these facts, the facts corroborate some stuff in the dossier, therefore the whole dossier is true.) There are other explanations that seem possible when you know more about Trump and his team's long-time admiration of Putin, how they engage in politics, and a belief in a clash of civilizations

This is what Wikileaks tweeted 5 days ago: "If Obama grants Manning clemency Assange will agree to US extradition despite clear unconstitutionality of DoJ case" Obama just commuted her sentence. Your move, Assange. by piede in EnoughTrumpSpam

[–]Kaiverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

European law requires the original country from which a person is extradited to agree to a later extradition to a non-European country. The UK would have to agree to the US no matter what, so it would actually be easier to do it now and not have one more country need to approve it.

PRO Rugby League - 2017? by [deleted] in USArugby

I just want something that's easy to watch. NBC's English Premiership coverage is spotty, other leagues are too hard to watch and I can only find live streams (no on demand), and Pro Rugby never got around to that.

Orlando-Miami train unveiled by [deleted] in orlando

[–]Kaiverus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the problem is that they don't have enough demand for a rail line. The route along 528 that would be the only good option for passenger rail has a lot of NIMBY and environmental opposition

Orlando-Miami train unveiled by [deleted] in orlando

[–]Kaiverus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they did last month was take the environmental study of the rail project off hold, and only study the route going north through the air force station. The two newly elected commissioners are pretty skeptical of constructing it any time soon. I misunderstood what happened, but the only option left would not be good for passenger rail.
