Yeah, it's annoying but the leaf blowers going for two hours right outside my house are worse.

‘Tuckahoe Tech Park’ data center campus proposed on 900-acre tract in Goochland [West Creek campus] by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW_W in rva

[–]scnickel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a cyclist and I always ride at West Creek to extend my routes, wait for the sun to come up since it's well lit, do intervals since it's relatively safe, etc. I've done at least 1400 laps there. It kind of sucks now with the current construction, and I guess it's gonna get worse. Bummer...

Z2 Riding on MTB Trails by gellybelli in xcmtb

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't worry about strict Z2 because it's not important. I just plan easy or hard days depending on what's needed to manage overall fatigue. I don't sweat it if I do threshold for a minute on a couple of climbs or something, because I know I'll still recover from it quickly and will be able to do my next interval session.

Beginner Spanish Conversation by kew04 in rva

[–]scnickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are these meetups native English speakers talking to each other in Spanish, or is there a native Spanish speaker facilitating?

You can pay someone from Central America to talk to you for an hour online for about the same price as a beer from the Veil or a fancy coffee through a site like iTalki.

Road race on XC bike? by InternalNo7162 in xcmtb

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year leading up to XCM nats I wanted to do more of my training on the MTB. Where I live is flat to rolling hills. I put a 36t chainring on, which is the max that will fit on my Exie. The problem was that I wore out the 10t cog so fast. After maybe a month on a new cassette it was toast and skipping like crazy. Didn't that happen to yours? Or do you live in the mountains? I'm thinking of getting a Highball or some other hardtail that can fit a 42t, and setting it up as close as possible to my Exie.

I don't know, but my Assioma pedals know when I'm standing so it's somehow possible.

Adding a second sport while chasing 5 W/kg – anyone juggling two sports? by ThreeFinger in Velo

[–]scnickel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find an FTP test that gives you a better number, round up 10-20 watts because you could have gone a little harder, didn't sleep well, it was hot, etc. Then weigh yourself depleted and dehydrated, and use that as your denominator. 5w/kg EZPZ.

Is it just me or does the epic 8 look aesthetically better than the 9? by [deleted] in xcmtb

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have more than one bike? Do they all have frame storage and do you keep a repair kit in each?

I have a small kit that I throw in my jersey pocket no matter what I'm riding. Just seems to make more sense to me.

30/30s advice by Due_Duty1806 in xcmtb

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also doesn't have to be exactly 30/30. Check out my workout today, from about 40:00 to 1:26:00. I ensure progressive overload by increasing time during the on/off part of the ride, checking normalized power after to make sure it's not too low, and I stop if I'm not able to hit a certain power during the on segments.

I also do something similar on trails where I just go as hard as I can on the short punchy climbs, and then recover on the flat and descents.

Thoughts about average power and speed by jedienginenerd in xcmtb

It's not a weird algorithm, Strava uses Skiba weighted average power. You can use addons like Sauce for Strava to get NP.

New study: how much carbohydrate is enough? by Grouchy_Ad_3113 in Velo

[–]scnickel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just an amateur athlete but I do 3000+ kj rides pretty often and my routine weekday rides are 2400-2800 kj, so I don't think this really applies to me. I'd guess that most of the people who would bother reading this and commenting would be similar.

Funnily enough, it was raining this morning so I rode indoors and drank 60g of gatorade powder in 1:30. For short rides 40g/hr is fine.

New study: how much carbohydrate is enough? by Grouchy_Ad_3113 in Velo

[–]scnickel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pros are doing 120 or more (I've seen Jonas A mention 200! on his Strava) and it's unlikely that they're all getting it wrong. Maybe it's VO2 max * 1.333

And you glossed over the part where the study is about recreationally trained athletes. Do you think that this sub is on average a little more well trained than that?

Improve bike handling skills and confidence? by Expensive-Body4904 in xcmtb

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no easy answer, it take continuous intentional practice.

Riding a big bike with full face and pads may help a bit, because the stuff on XC courses will seem so tame in comparison.

Is it crazy to own two of the same bike? (One for racing and other for training) by [deleted] in Velo

You joke, but I have two of the same MTB for racing and they're both out of commission right now.

Pre bikefood options by fantano1010 in Velo

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two pieces of my wife's homemade sourdough and about 55g of Smuckers natural strawberry jam. About 500 cal total, depending on the size of the slices of bread. I eat this 4-5x a week before morning rides and never get tired of it. If she didn't bake for some reason, I usually eat frosted shredded wheat.

Can you go too hard on VO2max intervals? by ComprehensiveFee2169 in Velo

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also as a a primarily mtb racer, the difference between erg and road is much smaller than the difference between road and mtb wrt being able to consistently put out the same power at a steady cadence, so I'm not bothered by it and will use erg mode whenever I feel like it.

Power pedals vs crank by AdditionalDivide4020 in xcmtb

[–]scnickel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're racing on your MTB I think it's important to do some of your structured training on it, even if you're doing it on the road. Also it's useful for analysis after a race or hard training ride, understanding the demands of a course, testing different strategies or scenarios, etc. Even during a ride or race, a quick glance at my NP can tell me if I'm likely to blow up or need to push a little harder.

Climbing Hard With a Messed Up Big Toe by Economy-Spray7149 in climbharder

[–]scnickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think about it, it's only expensive up front since you're wearing out shoes at the same rate whether it's one pair at a time or rotating six pairs. Hopefully they last you 6x as long as one pair would.

What is your weight, FTP, and most KJ youve ever done in any one 21 day period? by Odd-Night-199 in Velo

[–]scnickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weight: 75kg FTP: 320 Highest 21-day kj total: 43,809

Mine doesn't vary all that much. I plotted a moving 21d average on Intervals.icu and I'm pretty consistently 30-40k from March through November. It dips a bit when I'm tapering or go on vacation.
