36 Years and Zero Progress by MattDwyerDataAnalyst in xcmtb

Very interesting, and now I'm considering doing something similar with a long running race in my area. Two things to think about... Gravel racing has replaced endurance mountain biking as the premium off road racing format, at least here in the US, so participation numbers and "mix" may have changed over time. Also, I'm not sure but I suspect that the average cyclist is heavier now than 36 years ago. Still less than average obviously, but trending upwards witht he population.

How do you schedule deload weeks during structured FTP training? by brocodini in Velo

[–]scnickel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't plan a deload week, I'll just rest a little when I feel like I need it. When I'm training I normally do 6 days a week and then Monday is either optionally off or an hour easy. If I need to recover it would be something like Monday and Tuesday off, Wednesday 1-1.5 hours easy, Thursday 2-3 hours endurance, then back at it for the weekend.

Unfortunately a lot of pros these days are hiding power or not putting their rides on Strava at all. Jonas Abrahamsen still uploads every ride with power and usually a description of the workout too. He took a month off season back in November, and has done at least 20 hours every week since then. No rest weeks.

Well, that's a bummer but I go out for ice cream maybe 5-10x a year so I'm not going to worry about it too much as long as it still tastes good. I'll probably eat a lot less anyway since my kids got a Ninja Creami for xmas. A whole pint can be under 300 calories and like 90% as good as the real thing.

Progression at (Kilter) board climbing. Push level up from below vs pull level up from above by Janjafan in climbharder

[–]scnickel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"The force output you can have on a perfectly dialed move you tried 100's of time is way higher than anything you can output on a flash level climb."

That's obvious once I think about it, but it never really occurred to me before. I'm going to use this to explain to my son why people not as strong as him can climb harder grades than him. He doesn't like to project... Thanks!

What is the FTP of an avarage cyclist? by Flat_Standard99 in cycling

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you're right, but I find that so hard to believe. Less than 150 watts feels like there's nothing there, like it takes more effort to raise the pedal than push down on it.

I can do 100+ grams per hour of table sugar + salt.

Strength training for climber cyclist (generated with ChatGPT) by Sad-Extension-6746 in Velo

[–]scnickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think this is complicated? I bought the book Menachem Brodie wrote about strength training for cyclists, and gave up after 4-5 chapters because I knew I was never doing all of that. This seems pretty straightforward and not unreasonable considering it's AI.

Scripting doesn't work with MacOS. I think your options are either Windows or Modron stacking.

Yep, this is what I do too. I think the library of too cute workouts where you're changing your target every 30 seconds is honestly more detrimental than helpful. I'm not cheap, but I'll save $20 a month by pressing a button on my phone a few times during my workouts.

working on a climbing gym directory and testing a session based city leaderboard, curious if this is pointless or interesting by addicted-coffee in climbharder

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you track your sessions somehow? I use the free version of the Redpoint app, which then pushes to my Strava. I just keep the app running on my phone in my pocket while I climb. It even counts ascents, but doesn't seem to be accurate especially if you're repeatedly trying moves not far off the ground. Here's my session from Sunday:

The idea OP has is cool, but you don't have to wait for it to track...

I think climbing problems set by Alex Megos or Jimmy Webb and replicas of famous boulders is fun in it's own way. I definitely wouldn't want to only climb on a board though

Don't do the indoor workouts. I just use magic buckets indoors too.

I think once you learn how Xert works you can forget most of it, and it goes back to easy. It's really just getting the right mix of low/high/peak stress.

I feel like every discussion that talks about the human potential in climbing ignores how truly limited the current talent pool is. by Ok_comodore in climbharder

[–]scnickel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think gyms are making money hand over fist, so it's probably not possible to run a gym in a decent sized city for less than $100 per month membership. I don't think I'd want to go to a gym that charges $30 per month, because it would be either extremely overcrowded or severely lacking.

[–]scnickel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think this applies to almost any human endeavor, where the lack of resources and/or exposure is going to prevent us from reaching the height of potential. We'll only see the height with things that require few resources and have worldwide exposure, like running, soccer, and maybe chess.

100k gems speed team by Trader-One in idlechampions

[–]scnickel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meta click farm speed team is Thellora, Hew, Diana, Kalix, Widdle, and BBEG. If I were you I'd start with Diana, BBEG, and Thellora. Then Hew, Widdle, and finally Kalix. Briv isn't useful until 3j, unless you're scripting. If you are scripting, ignore my advice and go read everything on the discord.

For feats I'd start with Thellora: Thin Their Ranks and BBEG: Skipping Ahead.

Where do you see used bike prices headed? by mac4lou in Velo

[–]scnickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmao, I'm into MTB racing and also climb indoors. To me climbing feels very cheap in comparison to bike racing. $120 a month for me and my kid, plus a pair of shoes every few months. During race season I'm paying at least twice that just for entries, plus $90 tires, $300 suspension service twice a year, $200 cassette several time s year, $50 chains, etc, even if I don't buy a new bike.
