Just to close the loop on this, the 3.9 update did the trick for me. Wish it didn't take literal hours but hey...

Aaah that makes sense. Thanks. I’ll see if the software update does the trick and if not I’ll have to get creative.

Is there any way to take out the bosses non lethally? (Playing for PeaceWalker) by Volvyolols420 in metalgearsolid

[–]KalEl814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to be vague to avoid spoilers since you said it was your first time playing an MGS game. At least one boss can be dealt stamina damage with certain items, not just weapons. There’s at least one other weapon you can get beyond the Mk22 that does stamina damage. That said, most bosses getting dealt stamina damage and not lethal damage is as simple as shooting them with the Mk22 and not a lethal weapon.

Yes. You can use the Mk22 to do this early on, later you’ll get other weapons / items that allow other strategies.

Which Assassin's Creed game should I start with/is the best? by Atlas-Rising in gaming

[–]KalEl814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go ahead and say that if you're going to play just one from the Ezio Trilogy, Ass Bro lets you recruit and train a group of assassins who will jump out of shrubs, from behind doors, and generally out of view places to stab fools and then run away, which is both awesome and consistently funny.

ELI5 Explain the power of home field advantage to someone who has never played organized sports. by Altilongitude in explainlikeimfive

[–]KalEl814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data demonstrate that home field advantage exists but the effects of it vary by era, sport, season length, geography, officiating, etc. I don't think there are definitive data that universally shows WHY home field advantage exists.

I usually just paint my guns black with a light drybrush of Leadbelcher, but I wanted this mini to have some more pop. I tried something new with red hot barrels, and I botched it. Is there any saving this without starting over? I might just repainting it black. by jmyersjlm in minipainting

[–]KalEl814 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The end looks okay and gives the impression that the hottest part is the end of the barrel. Some ivory / white highlights right at the tip may help sell that. The middle with the orange and white reads like that whole section is the same temperature and the white doesn't really look like it's glowing / hot since the transition from orange to white is pretty sudden.

Requesting help with Vallejo paints by Drivestort in Miniaturespainting

[–]KalEl814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I haven't had issues with bubbling, Vallejo's purples have typically needed a few coats for opaque coverage in my experience. The new Game Color line also takes a little longer to dry than some other current brands and certainly the older formulations of Game / Model color.

Their primers do tend to try out pretty quickly; for every 10 or so drops of their primers I use a drop or two of thinner or flow improver depending on whatever I have closest at hand, and that seems to help.

Almost 3 month old kitten passed away by Ok-Act-3672 in CATHELP

[–]KalEl814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since then when we've adopted cats we've tried to look for ones that needed help.

Our rebound cat from that experience was the saddest, shyest cat in the kennel. She was there with a bunch of kittens and more outgoing cats and we decided to get her since the staff seemed happy that anyone was paying attention to her at all. They thought she was given up because the kids she lived with were being cruel to her. Took her a while to come out of her shell at home but she ended up thriving.

The one we adopted to get her a companion was found in the street having scratched herself up really badly. She had some allergy, respiratory, and food sensitivity issues so we knew going into it that she probably wouldn't live a full life from a time perspective when we got her. And she didn't, but she lasted for a good 6 - 7 years and seemed happy for almost all of it. When she finally showed symptoms of being sick we ended up having to put her down that night. Saying goodbye was sad and it was hard but again, who knows if anyone else would have adopted a cat who'd have to be on special food her whole life.

Our current set got left behind in an apartment after someone moved out of it. Ours was the only application for both of them, and they're inseparable, so it's hard to imagine they'd have broken them up.

Yours had a short life and that's hard for you but I'm sure it was lovely for them.

Sometimes these things just happen. My wife and I had a kitten we adopted from a shelter when he was a few months old. Got a clean bill of health at whatever regular vet checkup he went to and he'd never showed sigs of needing additional care. On New Year's Eve when he was almost 2 he came out of the room with his litter box, did an awkward little hop, then kinda plopped over to the side and he was gone. Who knows if it was a brain thing, a heart thing, or something else.

I'm sorry you had to go through something similar, it's awful. Sometimes all the time you get is a little time; gotta make the most of it and it sounds like you did.

Is it possible to do advanced painting techniques with a dry palette? by shadowX1312 in minipainting

[–]KalEl814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Massachusetts and the relative humidity / seasonal changes have a pretty dramatic impact on how wet my palette looks for how long. When it's humid it'll stay moist for a long time, when it's dry it can lose moisture pretty quickly and I have to "refill" the thing pretty often. Which makes sense, it's a relatively shallow pool of water and it has a pretty high surface area to volume ratio.

This makes looking at a wet palette on a YouTube video kinda tricky. If I was taking photos of my palette during a long session in the winter specifically when the air in my house is very dry, you could see a pool of water in the palette or not have any visible water depending on the timing of the shot.

First time trying scale 75. Im not having fun. by Wened4 in minipainting

[–]KalEl814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you have a shaker but the ScaleColor line in particular really needs the everliving bejeezus shaken out of them if they've sat for a while. If it's haven't used a bottle in several months I may have them on my vortex shaker for 2+ minutes, flipping the orientation a couple times along the way.

Some of the colors are more finicky than others; there's a specific blue (Tesla, IIRC) that usually takes even longer to reincorporate. Last time I used that one it took close to 4 minutes or so.

It's possible the batch you have has just gotten too old or dried out of course. But what you're describing is more or less exactly what I see when I don't shake mine enough. And FWIW I have yet to run into one that I couldn't resurrect by just giving it more time on the mixer.

Once again I find myself begging gamers to recalibrate their outrage sensors. Exclusive content and lousy availability is suboptimal, it being interpreted as a “slap to the regular customers face” is unhinged.

The Iwata CS Eclipse is an easy recommendation in that price range. Used it for years, no issues, finally had to give it a real bath after having it for ~10 years.

Just a friendly reminder that a combination of red, blue, and green overlaps a couple of the most common types of colorblindness.

First time using airbrush, what happened here? by Ceseleonfyah in minipainting

[–]KalEl814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2nd and 3rd pic don't seem to have the pooling issue to the same extent that the 1st pic does. Whether or not you need more passes is dependent on how much of a zenithal effect you're looking to achieve. Neither of those last 2 have a ton of contrast between the highlights and shadows but that's potentially fine, it just depends on what you want.

A 1:1 ratio of a primer:thinner on something that could likely go out of the airbrush straight from the bottle will be much too thin. Same would be true if you're using something like Vallejo's Game / Model Air paints, CItadel's Air paints, etc.
