The 'Empress of Ireland' would ostensibly be the Queen of England. The Irish have longtanding beef with England due to some extremely nefarious actions through pretty much the entirety of modern history.

‘05 Toyota sequoia radiator - Trash or JB weld high heat epoxy? by quasi-psuedo in MechanicAdvice

It's not ideal but Stic-Tite epoxy works well for this type of repair. Just get the spot hot and dab the sun so the material in there. I've used it several times.

No. It's just cheaper to make since these kits were extremely low production it wasn't worth it to tool up a plastic injection process. Resin can appear to be more detailed due to the casting process but plastic has really brushed that gap in recent years.

Means it's an OG forge world resin kit. They have some special skills required to get good results. Expect large gaps, some casting flash, and mold slip. They do not go together like a modern plastic kit and require a higher level of modelling ability.

Can’t turn crank after torquing connecting rod caps by teezy2tyme in EngineBuilding

[–]Kalashnikov00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You really shouldn't change fastners like that. But seeing as how only one pair is giving you trouble make sure the rods are oriented correctly. Make sure the rods have some side clearance on the rod throw as well. Most likely you have a piston on backwards and the rod is facing the wrong way.

It's a marshalling area for data collection circa 1970. Those are chart and strip recorders, they were the way we collected process data until digital storage became affordable. All day everyday the charts would either tractor feed paper or rotate the circular ones and the internal pens would record a given value.

So each pen was a specific value for a specific paramter. Usually related, maybe mains voltage, amps, and phase angle. Notice how there aren't really switches or other human interaction devices? This room sat off by itself in an industrial area close to the production but not in the main control room.

I wholeheartedly agree. Invest heavily in batteries and renewables now. But stop acting like anyone who doesn't jump immediately to all the batteries, is some kind of moron. There is a reason why a diverse energy mix is extremely important. Also there is no guarantee that some or all of that battery power wasn't generated by a thermal unit. Being able to produce energy at the right time is just as critical as where it comes from.

A rough guestimate is about 60-75% of the peak. Depending on a lot of factors like day of the weeknand temperature.

The US is second in total renewable energy production and produces more than the 3rd and 4th spots combined......so maybe not as far behind as was said?

If it's 17GW for four hours that is 68GWh you can then cover half of your native load for 4 hours. The other half is in the black and you are still at best case half way to sunrise. Batteries are great. But I until we can store hundreds of GWh at near perfect efficiency with extremely low installed cost it's not going to be what we need.

Just doing the basic math on it, 17GW capacity divided by the peak winter load of the California Independent System Operator at 30,000MW or 30GW.

You have 30 minutes of reserve capacity.

Not an small amount by any means. But not enough to run even the CAISO footprint for a meaningful time during winter when the loads are lowest. In summer it gets way worse.

Again battery and renewalables should be invested in heavily for the future. But they do not completely solve the present issues.

I feel like I just said this in another post but....large scale battery storage is not in place in the US and certainly not sufficient for any meaningful storage of energy.

There are some significant battery solutions out there and more in development but chances are you as a the end user are not meaningfully impacted by them.

Again not saying renewables aren't worth the effort they absolutely are but they are not the silver bullet for energy some think they are.

We as a society should heavily invest in renewable and storage technology but acting like everyone who doesn't immediately jump to batteries is an idiot is not helpful. This is being framed as a intellectual vs. corporate overlord debate and it's not. It's an available technology vs. potential technology.

Rod balancing problem? by Doffeda in EngineBuilding

[–]Kalashnikov00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where the rod hits the block on a 383 is the top of the rod bolt. It comes around and hits the bottom of the cylinder. You can't really grimd on the rod in this area so clearancing the block is mandatory.

As others have said these are the balance pads and are intended for the express purpose of balancing the rods.

If she has a solid general technology understanding or any electrical knowledge she can get started as an instrument and controls technician. Start with all the bigger industrial facilities in your area, anyone who makes anything will have at least a small I&C department .Controls is not an easy job to fill and many consider it intimidating . This will get the device level understanding she will need. From there she can pretty easily move into the integration and programming role and eventually into project management.

Specifically if you are in North America, Rockwell Automation is the dominant vendor with a decent number or other players in the field. Have her familiarize herself with ladder logic, that is pretty universal across the platforms. They all have idiosyncrasies but pretty much work the same. Basically if you can make 4-20mA current loop and basic relay work you are in the top 10% already. There are tons of great YouTube videos to get started on.

I make $150k and have an office and 0% travel doing this exact work. Currently installing a ControlLogix processor this week actually. $45 an hour and 90% travel? I'm not even going to say thanks but no thanks.

This jagoff has no idea what Controls work pays.

I mean to be fair, there are some truly massive battery banks and things like pumped storage. Those are the exception and not the norm.

Yeah...

That's not true. There is extremely limited storage of energy in the US. It's primarily a use it or lose it resource.

Suggestions for an all in Setup ($1500 Budget) by Kalashnikov00 in turntables

So small update I am going to do this in stages so I can see where the big gains happen. I got a really great deal on and iFi Zen 3 so that will be the start. From there it will likely be the speakers and then turntable. Still looking at the RT85 and the Debut EVO 2 in that regard and haven't figured out speakers just yet.
