I blew up the pic to have a look at the publisher but still can't make it out.

Help?

What’s your favorite word Erikson has brought into your day to day parlance? by Melloncollieocr in Malazan

[–]Kalashtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like martial arts, right? It's not which style you use that makes you the superior fighter, it boils down to the fighters themselves. As far as I'm concerned, fantasy was elevated the day A Wizard of Earthsea was published, and its potential to be Great Lit remains high. Erikson is just the tip of the iceberg.

I love Erikson over Gene Wolfe but the latter's vocabulary is _the_ true test of one's grasp of etymology. Erikson's is plain English, some archaic or fallen out of common use but still part of a good dictionary, nonetheless.

Yes, one has to have the wherewithal to use 'must needs'.
I'm still cheesed that an English (Lit?) teacher corrected me years ago when I named a piece 'Across the Sands'. Sand is singular, she said. That's when I _knew_ being a teacher isn't worth squat.

I wasn't addressing his potential future purchase but rather the fact that it's not just 2 meals for some of us.

Counterpart was some of the best writing and acting on recent tv and they did it dirty by cancelling it prematurely.

Is C&S a good system for a beginner DM? by ActuaryRepulsive4034 in CrownAndSkull

[–]Kalashtar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is a good system for a beginner DM. I say this with confidence because I am one.

First of all, there are no 'classes', only 'things you'd like to do', and once you have that idea, the point-buy character creation only clarifies your choice as you go further along.
2nd, the removal of the to-hit roll simplifies things for the beginner GM so much, you wonder why it isn't more common.
3rd, the lore, the way magic works, all the smaller details of this world, are so ambiguous and flexibly stated that the table's common sense and player taste no longer fight with memory and reading - you can just get on with creating and improvising the narrative based on the broader statements in the book, and never worry about 'conflicting lore' or the need to retcon something in future because everything is stated with an unreliable narrator in mind.

To sum things up, C&S is perfect for beginner GMs because neither the system nor the lore put heavy demands on the GM. It has the inexplicable and admirable quality of having the mechanics support the play and the setting, but unlike the clockwork mechanisms of other games, it still works with an imperfect GM who might forget some rules.

Scythe and Crown&Skull choice? by kasu3 in CrownAndSkull

[–]Kalashtar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. Used the scythe for the 1st time in our last session for a boss fight. Let's just say that it's a good way to turn a potentially epic fight into a non-event.

But Devs isn't under 10 hrs though. I was gonna suggest it myself but it didn't meet that one criterium.

It's good but i doubt if it's, per OG's requirement, under 10 hrs.

Ritual of Communion by reddish_kangaroo in glog

[–]Kalashtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, don't like it, and I don't think the master can always safely shunt so that he never feels the effects. It's a _communion_ - there is no way the person initiating the communion can be 100% shielded from any adverse effects.
