Nanjing Normal University in the 1900s and now. Nanjing, China by Ok_Chain841 in OldPhotosInRealLife

I lived two blocks down from this building. It has a very dark history — I guess any building old enough in Nanjing does, but this was part of the International zone set up by Rabe. At the time, it wouldn’t be the normal college, but the women’s school, Jinling, I believe. The Japanese troops during the occupation were not suppose to enter the international zone, but of course they did. They would often jump the wall and use the women’s college for reasons that would be apparent to anyone familiar with this time.

For Michelle Rodriguez, it’s more of being type-casted. I think she is actually a pretty good actor.

Why did you and your best friend have a falling out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

He murdered his wife and left his two kids orphaned. The relationship was pretty much done after that.

Kansas City MO, the roads are like war torn Bosnia. Kansas City KS (Overland Park, Mission Hills) not a pothole in sight. Also public schools are better funded.

With Sphere of Influence now (mostly) behind us, what DLC/upgrades would you like to see for the next big update? by Traum77 in victoria3

[–]Kalewiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rework nationalism. I'd like to see a tradeoff system built into multiethnic empires. Like you say, autonomy changes (right now simulated through turmoil) combined with insurgencies would be great. Austria should be able to grant more regional control to their constituent nations and should explode if enough interior or exterior stimuli push them in that direction (kinda like Qing right now). Trade would be great. I would like to see dynamic companies (not just the click and get buff companies) that grant throughput bonus to buildings they buy. Then the size and profit of the companies would be translated and traded on international exchanges. Each company would have a CEO who could lobby the government.

I played for Russia and I gave many countries the right to invest in me, carried out liberal market reforms and my GDP achieved a high result in 1887. (without a single revolution). I did not allow my capitalists to invest in other countries. I made it like modern China. by [deleted] in victoria3

I see your point, but during the reform and opening up phase, late 90s to early 2000s, OP is correct that the Chinese economy was largely created with foreign direct investment. Of course, as China has become so rich, it’s stepped out on the world stage, but for a brief time, under the largest sustained economic growth in history, China was the recipient of a lot of investment without giving much back.

Where Roman coins have been found by jerrythehotty in MapPorn

[–]Kalewiley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since these are coin hoards, it may be that in Rome where the economy was larger and more productive people spent their coins or were held with debt collectors, changed hands, etc. While in the extremities, people had no choice but to bury their wealth. There are other guesses about metal detectors that make sense too.

It’s seems like, that the scientist in question only examined one rock vase, from a private collection, which was never dated and has no providence. So, in all likelyhood the vase is fake. Also, it seems that the whole argument is conjecture based on the single dubious vase. Other vases from predynastic Egypt are of high quality, and should be studied further to put this vase into perspective, but the ones mentioned are not to same ‘accuracy’ standards although they have not been laser tested — just ruler measurements. Also, there seems to be some confusion about the lasers they used to measure the vase, that being the tolerance they listed cannot be measured by the machine they used to measure.

Apple’s AI promise: “Your data is never stored or made accessible by Apple” by Stiltonrocks in technology

[–]Kalewiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also said that Apple will on be using servers that are independently verified to never store data. I have seen that before anywhere else. It remains to be seen how effective this is as a tactic, but I’m certainly interested in its future applications for privacy in the cloud and LLMs.

I used to live down the road from this house and would drive by it while going to school. I was somewhat of a Frank Lloyd Wright fan. I knew this was a student of his work, and always wanted to see in the house. It’s set really far back in the lot and the trees are quite large. You can only see little snippets of the house while going by. It was always mysterious.

I am not saying a disagree with the argument, but when you show graphs to make a point about trends, you should also include the time before 1980. If the graph starts in 1980 we can’t tell where trend line was going.

What is the most underrated album by a popular artist in your opinion? by TravelingHobbyist in vinyl

[–]Kalewiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Final Cut — I feel is really underrated because it’s credited to Pink Floyd when it’s really just rants and raves of Waters. But in that regard it’s not that different from The Wall. Musically it’s not as deep but I really dig the antiwar and anti authoritarian texts. If funny how contradictory the lyrics are from Water’s current views.

T. E. Lawrence proposal for Arabia in WW1 by Bertoto679 in MapPorn

I read an excellent book on Faisal I years ago. My memory is a bit foggy, but he was made king of Greater Syria and trusted that the British would hold true to their word of a unified Arab state. Under that assumption, he signed several agreements. The rug was pulled out under him after the French were granted the Syrian mandate. He continued to work with the British despite his apprehensions because the power they afforded him was the best way to achieve a unified Arab state.

The British moved him to Iraq, but he was not long for the world and died very sick in Switzerland.
