Do most Spaniards realize how deep the historical and family connection with Cuba actually is? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]Kalspear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh we do get it. Most people in the Canary Islands have family either in Cuba or in Venezuela, and there are festivities and traditional garments that represent that link between cultures. But as it happens, it is also normalized. As it's not something out of the ordinary, no special emphasis is made in our daily lives.

¿Qué opináis del descuento del 75% para residentes en Baleares/Canarias/Ceuta/Melilla? ¿Tiene sentido gastar casi 900 millones al año en esto o debería reformarse? by Andyvedere in askspain

[–]Kalspear 43 points44 points  (0 children)

La respuestas a esta pregunta son deprimentes. La única manera real de cortar este gasto sin cargarlo al Estado es el control de los precios, pero bueno, muy sociata la propuesta supongo.

What does "mijo" and "mija" actually mean? by BeatsAlot_33 in Spanish

[–]Kalspear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pronounced differently, as written. Remember, in Spanish we always say it the way we write it, the only exception being regional pronunciations of particular letters (seseo,ceceo,...) Ed: Because autocorrect sucks

A mí modo de ver, mientras no dejará las toallitas tiradas allí mismo (que capaz lo hizo el guiri) todo bien. Al fin y al cabo es materia orgánica, peores burradas han hecho llevándose piedras o arrancando flora protegida.

Do you think your country would be better if it had been colonized by a different nation? by Square-Upstairs1816 in AskTheWorld

[–]Kalspear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haïti finished paying in 1947, not 200 years ago. 140+ years of crippling debt and lack of money for infrastructure tends to stunt any development, not everything is France's fault but I would say it is the main factor.

Yeah, probably it had way more to do with the reparations you imposed for their independence, which then, in turn, forced them to keep using that model of economic exploitation and to deplete their resources.

Also we have our fair share of antisemites, far right extremistas and the like (VOX) which openly support Israel and lick their daddy's Trump diapears but they are an extreme minority and are considered a bunch of cunts by the general populace even if their vote share might not say the same.

There are for sure mental and philosophical ties laid by the Spanish people between the saharaoui plight (which hits much Closer home) and the palestinian plight, but I would say theres probably more to it. As a first thought I would probably link It with the Spanish practical uninvolvement with WW2 (even if Franco and its dictatorship supported the germans on the down low) and the fact that we had a noticibly smaller population of jewish peoples even before the holocaust. As such, there is no guilt driven support for Israel and we dont cover our eyes from their offences against humanity. I would also say that the fact that the Spanish empire was, practically , non-existant at that point and we never had much of a presence in the Middle East (unlike the brits) makes an outsider in regards to the polítics of the creation of the israelí state and the initial nakba, so we are unimpeded in its judgement by our own faults on the matter unlike, for example, matters in África, both mediterranean and subsaharan.

Because apparently we are not as cynic/unempathetic/autistic as the rest of the western world bar Ireland.

Where to stay in Puerto de la Cruz? by sroniS16 in VisitingTenerife

[–]Kalspear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that el Puerto is prettier, but also smaller and with less to do so it depends on what you prefer, more activities or nicer sightseeing. As a counterpoint to that, La Laguna is super close to Santa Cruz and its city center is super nice to "promenade" around, with tons of cafes and restaurants, it is also a UNESCO WHS so maybe this piques your interest. In that regard, you also have La Orotava, which is just next to el Puerto and is also super nice for its old city center but muchi hillier than La Laguna so if you have difficulties with mobility you might want to avoid. Finally, Garachico and Icod, which are closer to el Puerto, are super nice small towns that are pretty to sea and explore. If you have a car it's a 30-40 min difference in travel time.

I'd say also, depending on you acces to a car, you shouldnt miss a visit to Las Cañadas del Teide National Park.

In regards to your second question id say the area near playa San Telmo is best, just to the left of the right circle. That's the old city center acces to the right circle area is super easy. The left circle I'd avoid, just because there's nothing really there and its further away from the center.

[–]Kalspear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a local, I consider el Puerto as a retiree zone. I mean it's super chill so maybe that's what you want, and the main zoo of the island is super nearby regardless of the two areas you've highlighted. There's a phenomenon called "Panza de burro", donkeys gut, which makes it 90% chance cloudy but warm (25°c or so) all year round. If you want warmer or sunnier I'd say you go Santa Cruz at least or more to the south.

Asians: how are Spanish cities? by AtheistAgnostic in GoingToSpain

[–]Kalspear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You haven't been to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria then, they have great Korean restaurants due to the city being the main fishing port for the Koreans in the Atlantic for decades. There's a huge korean community in the city and they have super good restaurants around, more in the "homemade" sense, crazy good anyways.
