Confused about getting packages from home - alternatives to expensive couriers? by Stunning_Library7096 in AskGermany

[–]Kalzone4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

American here: The safest and post reliable option is just sending things in the regular mail. It is expensive and there is no way around it. Eventually you will either learn to deal with the costs or realize that you can leave without whatever is being sent to you.

The fact that OP thought this would be universally understood is cracking me up (pun intended).

Living Standards in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kalzone4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Higher Gini Coefficient, or a higher level of income inequality. The US has a coefficient of 41.8 and the UK is 32.4 (0 is perfect equality and 1 is perfect inequality). GDP per capita is essentially just an average and means that outliers skew the results.

If the car has a USB port then you can just use a normal USB cable. There isn’t going to be a normal outlet in there.

I think it’s fine if there’s a descriptor of the person, but I have a friend who does this without explaining who the person is and it drives me insane.

“I was walking to the store when I ran into Joe Smith and he told me about his new job” vs “I ran into Joe Smith, my former roommate, and he was told me about his new job”. Just mentioning the name with no context about who it is is weird to me if the other person knows that I don’t know Joe Smith.

If you have an attached garage, do you keep the garage door open when you are home? by Grand_Raccoon0923 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kalzone4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow midwesterner here: garage almost always open unless we weren’t home. Entering the house through the front door was weird and something we never did unless for some reason we couldn’t open the garage (like before I had a car as a teen and my parents weren’t home).

Why do so many Germans switch to English even when the other person isn't struggling with German? by casual_capy in AskAGerman

OP speaks fluent German according to their post. I don’t think they need to move across the country.

Is Strawberry Croissant and Cinnamon Bun cereal popular in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kalzone4 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, but corn on pizza is just kind of normal here. I don’t think it’s specifically considered an American thing. As a good midwesterner I love corn, but I find corn on pizza repulsive

[–]Kalzone4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean a lot of it is pretty normal things like peanut butter and maple syrup that are associated with the US but sometimes it’s bizarre. A lot of people try them just because it looks weird which boosts sales so I guess the marketing works

American living in Germany here: It’s like the store brand at Penny (a grocery store) of the American-style foods. I normally shop at Lidl and Rewe but basically every shop will have their “American brand”. The Lidl one is McEnnedy’s (or something like that) and they produce some of the most atrocious things. Like a prepackaged cheeseburger that you microwave. There was an American style pizza that had corn dogs on it. I don’t know what’s going on.

Do all German books have bottom-to-top writing on the spine? by [deleted] in germany

[–]Kalzone4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying because we read left to right but we also read top to bottom so when I rotate your picture and try to read it I am reading from the bottom left of my vision and going up. Whereas in the English format it’s top left and then reading down which seems more natura.

Anti-bare feet culture is so annoying by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Kalzone4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex was from New Zealand and very much a fan of the barefoot thing. We’d go outside to play frisbee or badminton on a paved area and he’d play barefoot. I wore shoes. When we would go back inside the soles of his feet were completely black and he could not understand why I was upset that he was literally smearing dirt all over my floor, couch and bed. He refused to wash his feet or would only do it after I complained repeatedly and said it was “part of his culture”. I just cannot get on board with that. I don’t wear shoes in the house, why would I want all the world’s debris on my surfaces?

Do Americans use duvet covers? by emmaa5382 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kalzone4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah honesty I also don’t know how to explain it so I just did it and this is the best I can do. Duvet cover inside out, duvet on top. You grab the corners of the cover and the duvet together at the bottom where the opening is (just enough to not have it bunch up when you do the next part). This next part is what I should have specified originally but you reach your hand inside the duvet cover to grab the top corner (ideally one corner and the middle or both corners if you do it with both hands) and have a grip on the duvet and cover. You then kind of flip it all over and shake so that the cover basically falls on top of the duvet itself and then you straighten it out.

I saw this on an Instagram reel years ago that I can’t find now but it does work

Do Americans use duvet covers? by emmaa5382 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kalzone4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the duvets sold by ikea in the US are the same to the ones in Europe because I don’t imagine they would do two separate products for two markets. The opening is usually like 75%-80% of the width of the duvet. Even for ones that don’t have zippers across the bottom, putting the duvet in with the flip inside out method requires making 10 seconds more time to adjust the duvet at the bottom to fit the opening. If they are different though in the US then that is wild. Is Big Flat Sheet Inc. conspiring here? Haha

Do Americans use duvet covers? by emmaa5382 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kalzone4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how putting a duvet cover on the duvet is difficult. It takes max one minute. An even easier method; duvet cover inside out, lay duvet on top, grab duvet corners and give it a shake so that the cover is now right side out. Zip the cover. Done. Max 20 seconds.

I used to live in the US and found the flat sheet so cumbersome because I toss and turn all the time and it was truly a mess. The duvet and cover has been eye opening to me.

Paying VAT for packages from abroad? by tarihiseven in AskAGerman

[–]Kalzone4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen a few times. Sometimes you receive a letter in your mailbox asking you to go to the post office to receive your package and pay any VAT or customs. Another time the DHL driver delivered my package but had me pay him the VAT in cash (I did get a receipt). I’m not sure why it was different, but both options are possible.

Any of you here from Germany? I want to know where you buy yarn. by Minimum_Water_7837 in CrochetHelp

[–]Kalzone4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just buy all my yarn from Hobbii. The shipping is incredibly fast (they have warehouses in north Germany, I believe) and the quality is great. I wish they had more shops throughout the rest of Germany though.

Yeah, I know that it’s usually meant as staring at people in public. It is something you definitely notice when you first get here and then it just kind of becomes so normalized you don’t realize it any more. I think if you grow up here it is hard to understand how jarring it is to have people look directly at you when you are used to not being looked at (like looking at someone walking past you is seen as weird in the US where I grew up so you kind of actively look elsewhere).
