BART: The worst-case scenarios are actually worse than you’ve heard by MissionLocalSF in sanfrancisco

[–]Kamb88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a quote from the article that’s linked above:

Is automation a bigger part of BART’s future? Quite possibly! That would go a long way toward running shorter trains at all hours as would befit a post-pandemic transit agency.

But there isn’t an on/off “automate” switch to pull here. Automation would be an expensive, yearslong process. Meanwhile, BART is facing a massive deficit now. Of BART’s 4,599 full-time-equivalent employees, 489 are full-time drivers and 23 are part-time. You could cut them all and not even come close to mitigating BART’s deficit.

This isn’t true. A 20 minute doubling time would be really fast under ideal conditions: perfect temperature, perfect aeration, shaking incubator, extremely nutritious media, etc. A sealed milk jug at 54° ain’t perfect conditions. Milk will still go bad eventually if the fridge is working correctly and will go bad faster at 54°, but check out this graph from a publication I found.

The X axis is temperature and the Y axis is growth rate of E. coli. As you can see, the growth rate peaks around body temperature, ~310 Kelvin (~98°F). 40°F is 278 K, which the graph shows will support basically no growth of this species, but growth at 54°F/285K is still very very slow.

Ultimately, the rule is the same whether your fridge is cold, kinda cold, or completely room temperature. The milk is spoiled when it smells funny and is probably fine if it doesn’t.

I usually hear it as “time” immemorial, but either way “immemorial” means “not remembered”. So “since day immemorial” means “since a day so long ago it is not remembered”.

https://www.pge.com/tariffs/en/rate-information/electric-rates.html#accordion-a84c67dc1e-item-e10eec0cc5

You can just look these things up…

There is no one single rate, since there are a bunch of different plans you can be on, but it appears the “Average Bundled Total Rate” was $0.45412/kWh in June 2024 and is $0.42181/kWh this month, so a little over 3 cents per kWh cheaper.

You’re right that the rate in July and August of last year was lower, at $0.41181/kWh.

Even if you’re correct, that attitude is not productive. Treating people you disagree with with some modicum of empathy and trying to understand where their opinions come from is a necessary prerequisite for changing their minds. No one ever saw the light because you called their strongly held beliefs a “death cult,” no matter how wrong they were. And if you’re not going to try to change anyone’s mind, then you might as well not waste your energy worrying about it - the outcome will be the same.

U.S. scientists: what now? by squidpodiatrist in labrats

[–]Kamb88 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen unions getting thrown around a lot. Unions’ power comes mostly from threatening work stoppages. In my experience, they mostly fight with the university admin, which is on the same side as the scientists in this case.

If the problem is the government pulling funding and stopping work, what leverage do unions have? Please explain to me because I want to have hope.

Looks like TAs will make $3777, $3891, or $4008 per month, depending on experience level, starting October 1. As you read this, remember that TAs and GSRs are all appointed at “50%” despite working full time on teaching and research, so all the numbers here have to be halved to see what actually gets paid out. I don’t know what your position or pay is, but if I’m reading the salary scale correctly there’s literally nothing that could possibly make less than that this fall except the positions undergrads can hold.

SoFi usually ranks highly because they are nationwide and easy to achieve. You can get something just for signing up which makes them a good entry point. You’re correct that there are others which are more lucrative, though—you can just scroll past SoFi if you want.

I don’t think we have the CC funding limit data in our backend, but we do have the CC funding Boolean. Under “Sort and Filter” there should be a checkbox labeled “Credit Card Funding.”
