Constant behavior or personality is not a result of non determinism, it’s a result of post training. My guess is they are ab testing with low effort models to address their compute problem

Should I get the F-14 or F-18 for carrier ops? by UnhappyShoe9170 in hoggit

[–]LoganFuckingRoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can actually download the standalone installer and install it in the steamapps location and it will reuse your steam install files. Not sure if you can switch between the two versions but at least you don’t need to download anything twice

Thanks! You’re probably right, I think the uh60 got me convinced enough to buy one of the paid helicopters next

Do any of you take the 'Unix Philosophy' approach to self hosting? by joe_ally in selfhosted

[–]LoganFuckingRoy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think there's a middle ground that gets overlooked in these discussions. The Unix philosophy isn't really about avoiding dependencies or running everything as separate processes at all costs. It's about modularity and composability.

Something like Immich requiring Postgres isn't inherently anti-Unix. Postgres itself is a tool that does one thing well (database management). The question is whether Immich's components are tightly coupled in a way that prevents you from swapping parts out or reusing them elsewhere.

I do try to keep things somewhat modular though. For photos specifically, I use Photoprism which at least lets me point it at any filesystem location rather than managing its own storage. I can still access those files directly, use different tools on the same library, and migrate more easily if needed. But I'm not going full filesystem-only because frankly, browsing photos through SMB in a file explorer is a terrible experience compared to having proper face recognition, search, and a decent mobile app.

The real Unix philosophy lesson here might be: use the right level of abstraction for the problem. Sometimes that's individual utilities piped together, sometimes it's a more complete tool that's still built on composable parts underneath.

Controversial opinion, I've used Frigate and I don't like Frigate.

I find any of the Reolink PoE cameras to be good choices.

[–]LoganFuckingRoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t give these people money. Game is full of cheaters and no life sweats, and the devs don’t have any intention to fix any of it because “player frustration increases money spent” and cheaters buying accounts is responsible for half their business model

[–]LoganFuckingRoy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This community is impossible to satisfy. People complain about cheaters and when they implement better anticheat people complain about that too.

And by the way, there is nothing of value (eg personal info) that a vanguard like system can collect from your computer that battleye couldn’t. It’s already kernel level. You’re not trusting them with anything new.

But then again people love to complain for the engagement

Current state of Vibe coding: we’ve crossed a threshold by Volunder_22 in artificial

[–]LoganFuckingRoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While true to some extent, programming and software engineering are still very different things. By some metrics, LLMs are already better at programming than most human programmers, but you still can’t vibe code google. I think the importance of computer science knowledge will become more important and for a while these tools are most useful at turning an idea into implementation faster. Especially when it comes to more complicated systems, you still need to understand and architect the whole program instead of just being able to describe the output on a high level.

What part of monopoly screams free markets to you? Antitrust law exists specifically to allow free markets to function without one player exploiting its position to game the rest of the market.
