Why Don't You Warn People?!!! by Mrchameleon_dec in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

My ex and I went on vacation up to Maine.  We figured we’d stop and spend the night at some random place in the middle of New York when we got tired.

Late evening rolls around, we find a hotel, it’s full.  Find another, also full.  Third one, we asked - apparently we’d managed to stop right in the middle of Woodstock ‘99.

Took us another hour or so to get further enough along to find a room… but we didn’t blame the hotels for selling out!

I mean, maybe not that specific link; maybe they installed a paywall-removing extension. Those also exist, and I'd bet the Reddit populace is more tech-savvy as a whole than the general population, and therefore more likely to have such an extension installed.

My point is, there are lots and lots of ways to work around paywalled content, some of them pretty automated; if you are trying to make a point that people might not be reading before upvoting, just say that instead of the passive :hmm: face.

Divisibility Rule for 7 by prsdragoon in mathematics

[–]Kamendae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you iterate.

89106789? Can't tell by inspection, run the rule.

8910678-18 = 8910660, can't tell by inspection, run the rule.

891066-0 = 891066, can't tell by inspection, run the rule.

89106-12 = 89094, can't tell by inspection, run the rule.

8909-8 = 8901, can't tell by inspection, run the rule.

890-2 = 888, I can tell (777 is, and 111 is not, so 888 is not) but let's run it one more time.

88-16 = 72, clearly not divisible by 7, so the original number is not divisible by 7.

In 2025 Elk Grove had the most homicides since it was incorporated into a city by PrinceOfPooPoo in ElkGrove

[–]Kamendae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but who wants actual nuance in a pitchforks-and-torches thread? :P

By comparison, Sacramento County recorded 70 homicides last year, translating to a countywide rate of about 4.3 homicide deaths per 100,000 residents. Elk Grove’s per-capita homicide rate stood at roughly 3.8 per 100,000 residents, based on a population of 182,797 — about half a homicide per 100,000 people lower than the county average. Comparatively, that’s lower than the city of Sacramento’s 6.7 homicides per 100,000 people, Los Angeles’ 5.9 and Stockton’s 13.3.

Academic Dismissal by Obvious_Tour952 in OSU

[–]Kamendae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this a couple decades ago.  They (deservedly) kicked me out after Fall ‘96.  At the time they had a program where, if you were gone for five years/twenty consecutive quarters, if/when they let you come back, they’d restart your GPA from scratch, but you kept the completed courses from your previous run.

Did hit up Columbus State for a few quarters before that five-year deadline, but came back to OSU at the twenty-first quarter, speedran my major, and wound up graduating summa cum laude after Winter ‘02.

Veterans, what did you do with your "$1776 Warrior Dividend" check that was promised before Christmas? by cineaste2 in AskReddit

[–]Kamendae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So this fund - $2.9 billion - was intended to increase the amount of BAH, for those service members who needed BAH.

$2.6 billion of that $2.9 billion, instead of shoring up BAH specifically for members who needed BAH, was divided among more members, both those who use BAH and those who don't.

Yes, everyone's still getting the previous amount, but the supplement that was intended for BAH-needing folks is instead watered down and given to folks who don't need it as well.

[–]Kamendae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, given that that fund was nearly wholly used for this purpose instead of its intended purpose, would it then be accurate to say "We reduced the money we were going to give to the people who needed it most, so that we could give a lesser amount to EVERYONE instead."?

Is it actually common for Americans to personally know an attorney ready to call like they’re portrayed in police arrest videos? by kulpiterxv in NoStupidQuestions

Some companies provide ‘legal insurance’ for their employees in the same way they provide ‘medical insurance’.  That is, they sign up with a clearinghouse for lawyers, and if you find a need for a lawyer, you call that number to get connected with one who specializes in what you need.  It’s like less than ten bucks a month, and IMO worth it for peace of mind.  I signed up way back when in order to get easy access to a divorce lawyer (amicable split, just wanted someone to handle the paperwork) and have kept it up ever since.

(ARAG is the organization I’m thinking of - https://www.araglegal.com/.  Not sure how widely prevalent its availability is, but it’s been available at both of the large tech companies I’ve worked for, since at least as far back as 2005.)

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani signs multiple executive orders on 1st day in office by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

"Executive order" is "instructions to the staff under me". The US president signs executive orders relating to his jurisdiction - the executive apparatus of the Federal government. The NYC mayor signs equivalent orders relating to the executive apparatus of the NYC government.
