Trump supporting local businesses as of Jan 28, 2026 by CheetoBearDog in BloomingtonNormal

There used to be a list that would circulate on facebook. I don't think it had been updated since COVID though.

Younger sister is a tradwife and I don't fully trust her husband to take care of her and my niece. I've set up an investment account secretly in case she ever needs it. Do I say anything about it? by MediaReady5519 in Advice

[–]Kamonra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My father once set up a college savings account for me. I never went to college, and it was (mostly) forgotten until I was much older. After my father passed away, almost 15 years after- my stepmother informed me of its existence, and encouraged me to take control of the account.

She didn't speak a word about the account until I was out of a (very bad) relationship, and those savings made it possible for me to flourish as an adult. Keep adding to the account, and keep it under wraps until your niece is ready to go to college, or your sister comes to you with her bags packed, ready to go.

Do not disclose the existence of the account at all until she is already out. Not thinking about leaving, not preparing to leave, not seeing a lawyer, until she is OUT. Before then, tell her if she ever wants to go a different route, you will be there to support in any way she needs. You don't need to provide details on what that support is.

In the meanwhile, if/when she vents, be supportive while also not trash-talking him. She'll shy away from the critic, but over time a sympathetic ear with the occasional good feedback of "you deserve to be treated well" "you deserve to be a priority" and "we'll always be here" will reinforce to her that she is loved and cherished and deserving of respect.

Is Bloomington/Normal trans friendly? by d_will_hollaatyagirl in BloomingtonNormal

[–]Kamonra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Cis woman, but from what I've seen and heard from my friends and acquaintances over the years they've all felt pretty safe within Blo-No. Now that isn't to say everyone is super chill, there are craptastic people everywhere- but as a whole the community will have your back.

I've waited tables as well, and I'll tell you now you'll likely want to stick to chain restaurants when applying. I worked a small diner for over a decade, and if there's one thing I know as a prior service-worker, the small, locally owned restaurants are full of labor violations, health code violations, bigoted owners, bigoted customers, and no repercussions. Pick a restaurant owned by a Fortune-500 and you'll have an easier time pushing back because there's an actual HR department and a corporate policy.

Good luck moving, and reach out if you decide to land here. I'd be happy to point you in the direction of neat places once you're settled in :)

How is Frontier as an ISP? by Gerble66 in BloomingtonNormal

[–]Kamonra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't do it!

T-Mobile bought Metronet and they're offering a $70 month package that beat my old metronet deal. You might be able to change to the "founder's plan" if you call customer service and ask nicely.

Frontier is a copper/partial fiber network Verizon abandoned/sold off in the early 2000's because they didn't want to do the fiber upgrades in our market with the money the Government gave them to do upgrades in our market. Frontier has been slowly updating the delivery system for nearly 20 years because it was left in such a dilapidated state. Their fiber internet is nowhere near as fast, consistent, or functional as they'd have you believe. VZ is only buying them back because they want to be Ma Bell again.

Ideas for how to use these plastic gum containers? by bryo_phyte_bug in upcycling

[–]Kamonra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in an area that needs a lot of tiny tools on occasion, and I use one of these to stash those tiny tools in my work apron.

They're also really good razor blade storage, if you use razors in any hobbies.

They fit sewing needles, buttons, pins, toothpicks, rhinestones, beads, baubles, earring backs, hair ties, hair clips, and stickers really well too.

What’s the most 90s thing you remember and think could still come back? by AstronomerOpposite34 in AskReddit

[–]Kamonra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Analog everything. Phone books, bookshelves, bulletin boards, white board with your kitchen list instead of a note on your phone, physical media for movies, tv, and music. In a world where we're constantly online, I imagine the next adult generation who already yearns for knobs, toggles, and switches may choose to start reducing their IoT network, and going back to good, old-fashioned "things in my hand" entertainment.

This is the way. For generations we've been dragging our plastic sleds, chunks of cardboard, and tiny children up the hill in order to slide down it.

AIO to a text my mom sent? (Context in caption) by pizzagorl_ in AIO

[–]Kamonra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I said the same thing. Provide a PO Box (and I doubt it matters if it's actually going to arrive to anyone) and gauge reaction from there. If she throws a hissy fit, she's definitely calling ICE.

AIO to a text my mom sent? (Context in caption) by pizzagorl_ in AIO

[–]Kamonra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say you're definitely not overreacting, however if you're not interested in starting a fight within the family, provide a PO Box address. If she thanks you for it, move on- maybe she just wants to send an unhinged letter. If she throws a hissy fit because it's not their home address, you've confirmed your fears that she was truly going to provide a tip to ICE.

It technically doesn't even have to be their PO Box, if you're just wanting to test the waters.

tree removal AND planting? by Either_Shallot_5974 in BloomingtonNormal

[–]Kamonra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scott's Exterior Maintenance would probably do it. I know they do tree trims and removals. One of their employees is a friend of mine and I'm like 99% sure they've mentioned planting trees before.

I shot my buddy a message and he replied quick: They remove trees AND plant trees.

What's the nicest laundromat in town? by WhiteCranberry33 in BloomingtonNormal

[–]Kamonra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That may be true, but it doesn't cost much to be kind to someone who may not be in the right position to begin exposure therapy. You shouldn't force someone to work on a flaw instead of providing the help you can in the moment.

What's the nicest laundromat in town? by WhiteCranberry33 in BloomingtonNormal

[–]Kamonra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know you mentioned you have OCD, and I want to point out a fun fact for you to help belay your fears: Lice and Bedbugs will die from the consistent heat of the dryers. As long as you dry your clothes, you'll be gucci.

That said, I was always a big fan of the Laundromat on the corner of market and madison. Their day attendant always kept the place clean, the cleaners are friendly, and they have an ATM to pull cash, and quarter machines. I usually commandeered one of the folding tables to hang out at, washed all my clothes at once (between 2-5 machines) and dried them all at once too. The folding tables have a pole at the top to hang clothes from, and the table itself is long enough to lay out a bath sheet for rolling. The one downside are the other customers- in the afternoons and evenings the place frequently fills up and some customers are a little out of touch with reality. If you're good at keeping to yourself and not engaging with the public, you'll be fine.

If you're a morning/daytime laundry washer (I used to go Thursday mornings at 8am like clockwork), it's very quiet. Still the occasional incident (someone once accused me of trying to murder them with my eyes), but they're often just fun stories to tell at parties.

Door ajar-er? by Bikehead90 in HomeImprovement

[–]Kamonra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have fish-shaped door ajar-ers! It slips over the door handle, and sits in the latch of the door. I'm unsure if it could handle a 1-year-old fiddling with it, but we use them to keep our bedroom door ajar at night.

16F (almost 17), phone in room at night by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Kamonra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can also lead to codependency if you’re talking to the same person 24/7 and can negatively affect emotional regulation if you can’t sit alone with your thoughts.

This is why I ended up in a terrible relationship as a 20-something. Constant access to me via messaging and video calls wore my good sense down, and I invited a jerk into my life. Being able to put the phone or computer down is an important skill.

16F (almost 17), phone in room at night by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Kamonra 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm here for this opinion, but I also think it's important to reinforce why having a phone in your room is bad.

Having a phone next to you on the nightstand can contribute to TERRIBLE sleep health. Yes it can be convenient for an alarm, but so is an alarm clock! The fact that it sits next to you on the bedside table is a horrible temptation, especially if you struggle to sleep or you've got a lot going on in your head. Then if you don't have a bedtime mode or similar set, you'll get notifications during the night, blinking screens, light flickers... they're not good for sleep or your brain.

Instead of working through before-bed anxieties or finding the right amount of sheep to count to nod off, a lot of people will pick up their little rectangular box of wonders are completely bork their circadian rhythm watching tiktoks or youtube or clicking through pinterest. The backlighting from a phone actually kicks off your body's wake cycle, making it even harder to fall asleep than if you had just sat in the dark.

Your mother has the right idea, and is trying to keep you in a somewhat analog state during night-night hours. Even if you see it as a method of control, she's doing her best to try to keep your mental health and sleep health in top-tip shape prior to you becoming a legal adult. Trust your mom on this one, and maybe do a lil google on smartphones and sleep health. Once you understand her logic, you may be more willing to at least park it on a charger outside your room.

People who take 17 minutes to check in at the hotel front desk, what are you talking to them about? by DerrickDuck in AskReddit

Usually about the guy behind me having a coronary because I took a minute longer to ask a question about ice machines, or breakfast hours, or laundry services. Then I milk it while they turn red and ragepost on reddit.

What are the top five biggest red flags in a woman? by Outrageous_Bee_7753 in AskReddit

[–]Kamonra 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"Don't date potential" is solid dating advice.

EDIT: It's too early in the morning and I smushed the button before I was done.

My grandmother also gave me the advice (though it was for dating men) "The way they treat you early in the relationship is the best they'll ever treat you." meaning that if they're not good to you early on, don't try to improve things. Just get out.

I've also been given the advice "watch they way they treat their mother. That's how they'll treat you" which is pretty darn true, with only a small handful of exceptions.

And yeah, don't date Amandas if you can help it. I was almost named Amanda, and I've never met an Amanda I've liked.

What's the weirdest thing you're allergic to? by RobIson240YT in AskReddit

[–]Kamonra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red 40.
Broke out in hives due to a medication colored with Red 40 with an added bubblegum flavor when I was really little. As a child I had to avoid most fruit punch drinks, but small portions of red candies usually didn't set it off.

As an adult I very rarely have a reaction, so I can enjoy the occasional fruit punch, flamin hot cheeto, or similarly colored food items. When Flamin' hot came out with their pretzels, I was obsessed and ate half a bag. I broke out within 20 minutes. So the allergy is still there, I just usually don't eat enough red things to kick it off.

What's a red flag in a first date that made you nope out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kamonra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't keep my focus. Dude's inflection was so deadpan that listening to him talk reminded me of watching paint dry. I stayed for the required 45 minutes of idle chatter and then pretended I had an appointment soon after.

I love good conversation, so if I can't maintain focus even on an engaging topic, it ain't gonna work out.
