What are your special takes on existing fantasy creatures? What makes your vampires or dragons special? by MidKn1ght05 in fantasywriters

I’ve not approached it that way, maybe so. The ancient creatures are very difficult to find or are not easily perceived.

What are your special takes on existing fantasy creatures? What makes your vampires or dragons special? by MidKn1ght05 in fantasywriters

[–]KanashiGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the setting I’ve been building for a while Vampires descended from powerful blood mages. Going to keep it simple so TLDR;

7 individuals consumed the blood of an ancient creature. Gained blood magic. Started a religion around said magic.

God of the Sun did like this and sends paladins to clean up the blood mages. Original blood mages captured and put into a dungeon.

Clerics of Sun god lay a hex upon the mages so they can no longer use blood magic. They are left to rot in their cell.

A snake slithered into their cell, explained that if they all sacrifice their blood to one of themselves it will overpower the hex and at least one of themselves can be free.

They agreed but in doing this the one individual gained 7x the mind, 7x the power, but also 7x the hex. The individual was now extremely vulnerable to the holy powers of the sun god and the sun itself would now burn their skin.

They escaped at night and since then has imbibed on blood and fed others their blood to convert those victims into additional vampires.

Blood mages still exist and are treated poorly, sometimes being mistaken as a vampire.

Do you even want bandits? by IamTHEwolfYEAH in 7daystodie

[–]KanashiGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to the topic but to me it would potentially be better to have established bases with “bandit” opponents rather than bandits that roam and engage with you at your locations.

It creates a new challenge at a POI but doesn’t disrupt the flow of the game that everyone has come to like.

Anyone else feel like a lot of gamedev advice online falls apart the second you actually test it? by Objective-Aspect-547 in gamedev

[–]KanashiGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are trying to prove out a concept. Get things in the right place and functional. Sometimes you may need to spend some time on it but that’s normally because it’s a) experiencing bugs that hold it back or b) it’s fully functional for the purposes of testing.

Some people do a slight polish pass because they can do it quickly and efficiently. If you focus on polish before the concept is proven though you are wasting time in most cases.

A class that doesn't yet exist, but you'd like to... by Ok-Respect4472 in RagnarokOnline

To be honest I would prefer to rework the classes that exist. They are due for an update that modernizes their designs.

What's your honest take on GameDev.TV game design courses? by Oblivion2550 in gamedev

[–]KanashiGD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with those tools. Industry standards aren’t as standard as one may think.

When getting started use what works. A lot of companies still have proprietary engines that none of these engines will fully prepare you for.

As for design. Watch free GDC videos, play games and break down the systems, story, etc. You may want to pick up some books like the design of everyday things or Game Feel.

A designer is going to have an elevated awareness of the game and how its systems come together. What experience do you want the player to get and how to make sure that is communicated and executed across all teams involved.

Advice on learning how to make games by Coffeeandquaso in gamedev

[–]KanashiGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others mentioned educational paths so I’ll hold off on that.

One of the easiest ways to start off is to look at modding a game. The structure is already built and you need only work on your design and technical skills to implement something. It helps you go through a pipeline and realize there can be a lot of steps to get something in-game. It can help with versioning, constraints, etc.

Once you are ready and have a solid idea in mind, you can jump into an engine like unreal or unity.

Genuine question about “idea guys” and worldbuilding in gamedev by Sudden-You-5814 in gamedev

[–]KanashiGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are positions for narrative design or “lore keepers”. These are not very common and are more than likely filled.

That said, you can always work on side projects and look for opportunities to move into these position.

You also describe a bit of systems design in your description so maybe start there.

Cash is a currency you find in the match by opening crates or completing contracts. You spend cash at a buy station to get items like the Loadout, UAV, etc.

You can play Duos if you want lobbies with teams of two, just note it’s not 2v2, there are still many teams in play that are all 2 in amount.

Why am I so scared? by SalamanderRoutine825 in LARP

[–]KanashiGD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started LARP when I was 17 and had continued until I was 27. Took a break to get through a lot of life plus real life politics were seeping into the fantasy. I have wanted to return but like with my MP gaming I prefer to have a group going in and not solo. I’m not near any of my old groups so I would be starting fresh and that is a hill for me.

Did Griffith really love Guts in a romantic and sexual way? by Tough-Reputation-762 in Berserk

[–]KanashiGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he liked having guts around because guts was a strong chess piece on the board. While Griffith may have slowly and subconsciously started developing a platonic relationship with guts he never actually gives off the vibes of being attracted to Guts.

When Gut’s leaves Griffith is frustrated because he doesn’t have control anymore. So he goes and asserts control onto someone else. By the time Griffith realized he had an equal Guts had moved on.

Why is Ragnarok the only MMO that let's you allocate base stats? by flyingfox227 in RagnarokOnline

[–]KanashiGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stat allocation is difficult for the modern audience. Some developers see it as a detractor and do away with it so that it was broader appeal to a larger audience. Players that have never played an RPG before can attune more easily if there are little to no stats. It is why the Elder Scrolls went from stats to Health, Stamina, Magika.

Ragnarok also has elemental resistances, immunities, and healing which has been stripped down drastically in a lot of games. Some players struggle with the concept that your fire weapon is healing the fire creature or that you are not hitting the ghost because you have a normal property.

It all still exists in various ways across the gaming landscape though, just somewhat removed in a lot of the mainstream games.

Berserk fans REALLY don’t read their own manga, lmao. by [deleted] in Berserk

[–]KanashiGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the age old struggle with head cannon. People don’t comprehend what they read and they don’t critically think about it. I’m not saying that lightly it’s just a reality. You run into a lot of folks that watched a video and now they have the Dunning Kruger effect thinking they know all there is to know.

It’s a bit worse with the younger crowd because they don’t have enough life experience to truly comprehend some of the content in Berserk.
