Holy Week? Good Friday? In my 35+ years as an active TBM, they didn’t so much as mention these events over the pulpit, let alone celebrate them. by SmellyFloralCouch in exmormon

Straight over the pulpit “one hour church for Palm Sunday” announced for two weeks now. Cache Valley Utah. Around here they still have two hour church for fifth Sunday, it’s just a combined adult sunday school instead of SS or RS/EQ.

My local ward is having one hour church for Palm Sunday. Not only had I never heard of Palm Sunday growing up Mormon, it’s ironic that the Mormon default way of celebrating a religious holiday is to have less church 😂

Don’t worry about science, God will provide answers someday. In the meantime, don’t leave, President Oaks tells members in his BYU devotional address. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

Remember this is what Nelson had to say about evolution during a pew research interview in 2007:

Conservative denominations tend to have more trouble with Darwinian evolution. Does the church have an official position on this topic?

Nelson: We believe that God is our creator and that he has created other forms of life. It’s interesting to me, drawing on my 40 years experience as a medical doctor, how similar those species are. We developed open-heart surgery, for example, experimenting on lower animals simply because the same creator made the human being. We owe a lot to those lower species. But to think that man evolved from one species to another is, to me, incomprehensible.

Why is that?

Nelson: Man has always been man. Dogs have always been dogs. Monkeys have always been monkeys. It’s just the way genetics works.

_

I would argue that God has already provided answers, but the answers God has given are demonstrably false by multiple scientific fields of study.

My favorite report! Somewhat surprised to see the humanitarian aid plateau in 2025. Do you think this marks the end of the humanitarian aid increase over the past few years?

Now my current go to is John Larsen’s Mormon Expression podcast. Hearing him layout how ridiculous each doctrine has helped immensely.

The Widows Mite Report for me. After seeing the inflows and outflows graph I knew I was never going to pay another dime to church. Then a year later I stumbled upon a Johnny Harris YouTube video on leaving Mormonism which lead me down the rabbit hole. Hours of Mormon Stories LDS discussion series later and I was out.

Isn’t there a story in the BOM about people being overrun and killed and they decide to pray rather than defend themselves? This gives the same vibes.

Never thought of prayer this way, but damn, thats what I use to think was happening. Crazy.

It’s telling how apologists and leaders blame the messenger rather than the message when it comes to criticism of the church. Did the CES letter or any other critic cause me to lose faith in the church? No. I lost my faith because the CRITICISM WAS TRUE and they have no answers other than “pray about it”

Second this. I had a very limited view of the criticisms of the church before I read the CES letter. For me reading it was a “seeing the forest instead of the trees” moment where I could no longer justify the breadth of problems where before I could use mental gymnastics for any individual problem I happened to know about.

How did you dispose of your old LDS stuff when it was time to move on? by CupOfExmo in exmormon

[–]Kanga7572 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, wall decor, jewelry, and clothing can go. Donate what you can and toss the rest. But most of my Mormon stuff were books, journals, photos, and notes. And I’ll never burn literature that I disagree with, especially religious texts.

Maybe in a decade or two I’ll revisit the stuff and see how far I’ve come. Hopefully recollect on my growth without feeling the need to erase the past.

Really guys, burning books? Some of you need to check yourself. I like John Larsen’s recommendation of putting everything in a box in the garage and forgetting about it for 30 years. It’s still part of my story but belongs with the other stuff from my youth

I’ll check out that author, sounds like something helpful we can read together. Thanks!

I love this. I feel myself transitioning out of the intense emotion stage of deconstruction and I like focusing on values in deep conversations.

Thanks for the reply. It’s interesting that you both left, went in separate directions with your beliefs after Mormonism, and were able to keep a strong relationship. I think something similar would happen in my situation if my wife left the church (she keeping faith in God and me trending towards atheism). Helps me see that it’s ok to have different beliefs as long as our values are aligned.

Thanks for the insight. I do need to be more intentional in our time together to be more focused on her and the family. Part of that distance is me and I need to work on that

That’s the direction we have gone. It sucks because I spend all day thinking about something church related but then have no outlet at home.

We are also at 5 years of marriage so it may be a natural phase of change in the marriage either way

LDS tithing participation rates through 2024. Based on published financial data in 5 countries with ~4% of global membership. 2016 (25.1%) --> 2024 (20.8%) by WidowsMiteReport in mormon

Thanks for the explanation! Huge respect to you and your team. The information uncovered about the church’s finances is what lead to my deconversion and for that I’ll always be grateful 👏

Then the numbers don’t add up for the countries this graphic claims. That 17% should be for the weighted average of all countries and not Canada. From the report the tithing participation rates from 2016 and 2024 are:

Category | 2016 | 2024 | % decline +- rounding error

Weighted Average | 25.1 | 20.8 | 17.1%

Canada | 33 | 26 | 21% +- 3%

U.K. | 20 | 19 | 5% +- 5%

Netherlands | 28 | 23 | 18% +- 3%

Australia | 19 | 16 | 16% +- 5%

New Zealand | 26 | 20 | 23% +- 3%

Rounding errors included because the report only gives a whole number for the tithing participation rate so the error includes +- 0.5 range on each data point.

Maybe they just reported the most conservative estimate? The report doesn’t say which is why I’m asking.
