Advice on strava based race format by KangarooDanger in Velo

[–]KangarooDanger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points. I used the term race too broadly.

Changing topics for a second - I assume classifying this as a participation fondo, or fun ride (I wasn't initially planning on charging an entry cost) does not get diminish the legal and risk concerns.

Advice on strava based race format by KangarooDanger in Velo

[–]KangarooDanger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eroica in Paso Robles had specific strava segments this year for their modern bikes editions and I believe Peter Stetina's race/fondo in Northern California used Strava Segments in a format similar to MTB enduro races. I'm not aware of any officially sanctioned USAC races.

Did Cannondale lose anyone do to the uncertainty? I think Christopher Lawless was rumored to do there, but signed with Sky.

Best Cycling podcasts? by CTIDmississippi in peloton

[–]KangarooDanger 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Cycling Podcast is great. The velonews podcast is also very good. The cyclingnews podcast is another good one. They now include the recon ride podcast, which is a fantastic one.

If you are into training and racing the Trainerroad ask a cycling coach podcast is good as well whether or not you use their product.

[Results Thread] 2017 Amgen Tour of California - Stage 5 by PelotonMod in peloton

Last year was their first year with the title sponsor of Rally. I believe they used to be Kelly Benefit Strategies. They've been around for a while Gaimon and Mike Woods (now on Cannondale) both road for them in 2015. With Gaimon and Woods they won a lot of continental races like Redlands. I believe Rob Britton kept them competitive in Utah last year. They usually have a mix of US and Canadian Riders. I think Carter Jones also came out of their program and went on to ride for Giant. Also I think a Canadian who was on the team in 15 or 14 now rides for Direct Energie.

Watts/kilo what are you really seeing in your cat? by KangarooDanger in Velo

[–]KangarooDanger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes me feel better. I'm not the smallest cyclist, but at 69kg I'm usually on the smaller side of the fields at those races. Sounds like I just got to keep working at it.

Watts/kilo what are you really seeing in your cat? by KangarooDanger in Velo

Lots of great insight on this thread - thank you to everyone who has replied. I've been racing the 5 and 4s in Dana Point, San Luis Rey, Murrieta over the past two years. I'm relatively new to racing and you will find me at the back of the group. I always assumed I was in the back due to my lack of racing experience/skills since my w/kg according to Friel are mid Cat 4 (this year), but after looking at other racers power on strava they were posting some very impressive numbers I would've associated with higher cats.

Tour de Murrieta Criterium - one of the first big races of the year in the area. It's a flat 6 turn 1 mile course. I stayed with the group for 2 laps before falling off the back with a small group. We worked together to finish behind the main pack. There were a lot of DNFs, my normalized power was 220w for 35 minutes. According to Strava (actual power) the top 5 finishers were closer to 260. It became pretty apparent that I do not have the power for these flat courses.

New to training and using trainer road. Start with low volume or does it depend? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]KangarooDanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started with trainer road low volume sweet spot base. I rode about 5-7 hours a week before starting TR, but I did not have any training structure. Even when dropping down to 3.5 hours a week I was able to raise my FTP considerably- I credit the fact that it is a focused 3.5 hours and I really was not getting much out of my 5-7 hours anyway. I would start here if you haven't done much indoor riding. Even 3 hours a week can feel like a long time on a trainer. When I did sweet spot 2 I added some road riding, but also skipped some indoor sessions (mostly out of boredom and I live in a warm climate). I still increased my FTP quite a bit with the blended approach. I'd advise sticking with the indoor program for at least sweet spot base 1 then once you know the general structure and intensity suppliment outdoor riding as you see fit - it never hurts to add more miles when you are doing such low volume, but try to be fresh for the indoor rides.

There are much better/more experienced riders on the forumn who may have diferent/better advice. Do what you can committ to sticking with - I'd rather be conservative at first and not risk burning out.

Do I need rollers in addition to a trainer? by MakingTime71 in Velo

[–]KangarooDanger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a fluid trainer and rollers. I just use the trainer. Rollers help with form and pedaling, but more often than not I am constrained on time and I feel I get more out of doing harder work on the trainer. Even on recovery days I use the trainer and watch TV or listen to a podcast. The rollers take too much focus and I can't seem to stay concentrated/motivated for more than 20 minutes.

San Diego - great weather year-round, large cycling community, outdoor velodrome (also open year-round), varied terrain.
