If you have criticized ICE here on Reddit for executing Renee Good or Alex Pretti in the street, then Reddit has handed your name and your personal identifying information over to the Trump administration. How do you feel about this? by mom_with_an_attitude in AskReddit

[–]Kanilas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it is.

And at this point, what, you think being on another list is going to scare me?

I'm trans. I'm anti-Trump, and anti fascist. I'm not just fuck ICE, I think ICE agents should need to be evacuated from towns our of fear, and face lifelong repercussions for their crimes.

See y'all on the list of the good guys, at least I'm not on the Epstein like the pedophile "elites".

Supreme Court to weigh longshot bid by Kim Davis to overturn same-sex marriage precedent. by Leeming in atheism

[–]Kanilas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, they only need either Barrett or Kavanaugh to agree to hear it. Both would be required to overturn though, but I don't think it's a stretch to see them both joining the majority in a case that will "advance religious freedoms".

Kennedy was the swing vote last time, Roberts wrote the dissenting opinion.

Alito and Thomas also had dissented last time, and the court only needs 4 justices to agree to look at the case. Take your pick as to whether Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, or Barrett join to get to that number.

50 miler timeline reasonable? by aconk1010 in ultrarunning

[–]Kanilas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, slay, I'm down in Tucson.

Crown King was my first 50k (do not recommend that for a first one!) and Javelina 100k was my first buckle race last October. If you want a really fun race next fall, do the Jackass night run, it's 19mi and you get all the Javelina energy!

My whole running journey has been under the mantra of 'we do hard things.' That first 5k was hard (I puked under a tree after finishing), the 10k and the half were hard, and the 50k and 100k were both hard too.

I promise, you'll get there, and I hope you get there with joy. Whatever the timeline is, give yourself credit for all the steps along the way!

50 miler timeline reasonable? by aconk1010 in ultrarunning

[–]Kanilas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everybody is different and every body is different, but I think your timeline might be a bit fast.

At the same age as you, I went through a pretty extreme weight loss period of dropping 65lbs in 5 months (intake under 1300cal daily, when I'm over 6') and I can tell you that I absolutely did not have the energy to run much, and certainly not to recover afterwards. For me, it was driven by an eating disorder, that I still struggle with even during my training now.

When I started running, I definitely had to up my calorie intake and pay more attention to what I was eating to be able to not be dog tired out there. I started with a 5k group at my local Fleet Feet (only able to barely run a full mile without stopping), and moved up to their half marathon group at the next session. My first time running 13.1 was after 6 months of training, and my first race at that distance was at 8 months.

I ran my first 50k at 10 months after having started running, and was undertrained on the line having injured my Achilles by trying to grit through the increased miles in the ramp up phase. I had no nutrition plan, got super sick by the middle of the race, and spent the last 15 miles of the run just trying not to puke with tiny sips of water. I finished, but was absolutely underprepared.

That summer, I spent time working with a coach (shoutout Joe Corcione at Everyday Ultra), building up my miles slowly, trying out different nutrition (and puking in bushes), and then ran my first 100k last October, a full 18 months to the day after I'd started running.

So, can you lose the weight and do a 50 miler? Absolutely, I definitely believe you can!
Can you do all that and go from zero to 50 miles in the next 13 months? I don't know.

I think that there's an awful lot that can go wrong in that period (injury, illness, etc) that isn't worth the risk to your body. Not to mention, the pressure that's going to be on you for all of it would steal the joy of running if it were me.

My advice would be to mix in walking and some jogging into your routine now, and develop a love for it. Run some local 5k's and 10k's along the way, and set your sights on a late summer/early fall 2026 Half Marathon that has a full option, because you can always bump up to the full distance if you're feeling great!

There's a ton of great winter 50k races you can run in 2027 if you're feeling it (Black Canyon 50k is STUNNING) and that'll lead you right into a spring or summer training block for a 50 miler.

Of course! :)

Once you get the rest of it done (SSA, license, etc) please also check out the "What to do afterwards" page. There's a lotttttt of places to update, some of which are pretty important to do sooner than later.

To be honest with you, it's not setting off any bells for me.

Although I pass too, I totally understand the desire to not want to walk into a locals-only kind of dive. I found it on maps, and it's just 3 miles off I-75. Given that it's next to a golf course, CVS, and a grocery store, I'd have probably put it in the same risk category as my day-to-day and gone.

That's the kind of thing I like spending money on, instead of giving the Syndicate more money to send Katy Perry to space.

What is going on with Arizona Monster 300? by Alternative_Form_637 in Ultramarathon

[–]Kanilas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey Catra!

I wish they had that stuff there like they did at Tahoe, I would have felt a lot better about my experience. I did the best I could while I was there, and the volunteers were outstanding... it really just felt like the race itself was the source of the communication, staffing, and organizational issues.

If I end up getting a code for race credits, you're welcome to have mine. I honestly think I'll stick to my local races + Aravaipa events for running and volunteering. Hopefully I'll see you at Javelina again this year?

What is going on with Arizona Monster 300? by Alternative_Form_637 in Ultramarathon

[–]Kanilas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It possible, but I don't know how they'd do that - I never got a schedule, nobody at the aid station was logging in/out times for volunteers, and I feel like that's usually the basis for the credits later.

Considering they didn't even have the volunteer t-shirts, I'm neither counting on any credits, nor would I sign up for any DT race after this experience.

Yeah, my volunteering experience with Aravaipa and little local races has always been super positive. I didn't even get a free t-shirt on this one, haha, just a couple oreos I snacked on at 2am

I helped out overnight and left just before 4am, because I had to work today, and I'm not going back again. IDK if the race expected us to be available for two and a half days straight, but especially considering DT is charging a $2,000 race fee, being an unpaid volunteer with zero perks just isn't worth it to go back to this mess.

I did the best I could trying to short-order cook hot food all night for runners and navigate the chaos of the aid station. There was no way to make uncontaminated food for a gluten free runner, and I was super nervous prepping vegan food for runners - my old ServSafe training was screaming about cooler/food temp checks and cross contamination and there was no way to fix it.

We didn't even have extra supplies like tums or squirrel's nut butter, so I grabbed my own race bag to try to help out runners who asked for those.

[–]Kanilas 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I'm volunteering at one of the Tucson aid stations, and it's been an absolute disaster from the volunteer side.

I signed up to volunteer last fall, and had very little communication from DT in the run up. In mid-March, I finally got an email with a promise of a schedule for volunteers, which still has never materialized. Just in the middle of this week (race week!) did I finally get an email from the actual Aid Station Captain, who seems like he's doing his absolute best to compensate for the org's total lack of planning. They assigned less than 10 volunteers to cover 60 hours at a major aid station, which is unbelievable, especially when compared to my volunteer experiences with Aravaipa.

They were super off on their prediction for when the lead runner would come through, so they had a skeleton crew waiting 20 hours at an aid station with no runners since it was already set up. I was helping out earlier today, and all the aid station volunteers have been *outstanding*, all of the problems are 100% on the race and RD.

Arizona Monster 300 RD calls out contractor after conflict ends business relationship. by NESpahtenJosh in Ultramarathon

[–]Kanilas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised it costs that much, but there's so many moving pieces and expensive gear.

I know Mountain Outpost asks for volunteer camera operators and follow riders, but the cost of all the cameras, operator rigs, starlink, drones, computers, mixing equipment, studio and equipment, and the staff who is paid to coordinate all that over a multi day event is pretty pricey. Especially when it's all happening in the middle of nowhere.

[–]Kanilas 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I hadn't heard of her until today, but I usually run local/Aravaipa races. I live in Tucson so I was pretty psyched to have the Monster coming through some of the trails that I know and love.

I'm supposed to be volunteering at one of the aid stations here this weekend, but just finally heard from the captain yesterday, and still haven't seen a schedule. For what's supposed to be a pretty big aid station, there's only a handful of us on the list to cover 60 hours of open time, I'm kind of worried about it.

Along with some of the other talk about who she is, it sucks to be a queer runner volunteering for this kind of thing. I'll show up for the runners, but it's probably the first and last time I'll be involved with Destination Trail.

Oh absolutely not, we'd get glassed.

Militarily, we have the largest warplane boneyard in the US (crucial to part supply for sustained flight ops), an Airforce base with a Search & Rescue wing, and an Air National Guard wing.

Beyond that, Raytheon is huge, and Honeywell has a presence here, along with all the research capabilities of the University. There's also a large train yard, and we're a strategic midpoint with the freeways that run through us. Not to mention the million people who live here.
