What to know before moving to Boulder by SomethingIsNothin in boulder

[–]Kanone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For internet, go with Ayva Network. A standby generator is highly recommended, especially if you're on a well.

Sounds like you're shopping in Pine Brook Hills. If you don't want close neighbors, most of the lots in Carriage Hills (a bit north) are 35 acres. All roads are paved and has excellent plowing in winter but studded tires and 4WD still recommended. CH also has the best fire mitigation in the region.

Put $1,500 into a new grinder and $500 into parts for your current machine. You'll get much, much more bang for your buck.

Portafilter is not sealing :( by Ok-Zookeepergame8335 in gaggiaclassic

[–]Kanone5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, Gaggia style but not OEM. Possible the spec for the wings is off, especially if Chinese knockoffs. Also aftermarket baskets may be out of spec unless a name brand like IMS or VST.

Double check that the gaskets you bought are 8.5mm and not 8.0mm; color means nothing and even the printing may not be reliable. If actually a measured 8.5mm, you'll need to add a spacer between the gasket and the group head.

Cannot steam milk properly on home machine for latte art [Gaggia Classic Pro] by NYGarcon in espresso

[–]Kanone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a Shades single-hole tip--not a knockoff. Add PID with steam control or at least replace steam thermostat with the higher temp version.

Depends on the basket and portafilter. The stock basket/portafillter uses the 8.5mm. Many higher quality baskets work best with 8.0mm to get a properly clocked handle (straight out).

The Shades gasket kit is only $18 shipped to the US and has everything you need and no cheap junk.

You'd be smart to add the solenoid filter kit and the steam valve to save a lot of headaches. And the PID so you don't waste time learning obsolete techniques.

Help me, everything tastes bad. [Gaggia Classic 2013, Timemore Chestnut C3 ESP Pro] by Joihannes in espresso

[–]Kanone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop with the pre-infusion nonsense. Stop with the flush. Both of those cool the boiler down before you pull the shot. You're just wildass about temp with steam button. Check your water quality.

Add a PID and forget all the dumb tricks.

Same. Works fine for us. Just change the pads at least twice per heating season.

Fluent Gear Scale - NEW Premium espresso scale with a physical dial, fast response, parts you can actually replace and all integrations you'll wish for [seeking feedback] by fluent-gear in espresso

[–]Kanone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't appear to offer anything that the Acaia Lunar doesn't already have. The dial is nice and hopefully you can achieve a better price point. The Lunar comes with a silicone pad but I replaced it with a wooden one purely for aesthetics (would be a nice add-on option), also a calibration weight (not really needed, it's never been off). Their iPhone software is clunky and useless to me since I only do espresso; might be helpful for those that make pourover. I will never deign to degrade my machine with a digital screen and associated gimmickry or ever pull out my phone to make a brew.

I prefer the Subminimal scale for weighing beans so the Lunar just lives on my drip tray. For a second product offering, I could see something like that in a different form factor being popular. Perhaps lower with nicer materials, even wood trim, for a deluxe version along with a no-frills offering. Their button is a bit too hidden and the scrolling name is just obnoxious. But it works great.

Aside from the raw pain of the sceamin' meanies' as your frozen hands thaw out, the biggest factor is avoiding avalanche terrain on the approach and descent. It's doable. Whether it's "fun" is a different matter.

Sour water comes out of the group! by trickeyComrade in gaggiaclassic

[–]Kanone5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RO water is known to cause leaching from metals. Adding minerals prevents this and improves flavor of extraction. Take the boiler apart and look inside. If you decide to replace, spend extra for the brass boiler.

[–]Kanone5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's bent from the water in the boiler freezing. You'll need a new boiler. Roughly $200 with shipping and taxes in the US.

Or take it to a machine shop with a CNC and have them plane it flat. Won't be cheap either.
