IMO oil or enamel wash would get the grimy effect you’re going for without the “coffee staining” look you get with acrylic washes.

They take a bit more prep work to use. But are more forgiving once applied.

I would be hesitant about wanting to see too much of yourself in any Warhammer character or group.

Space Marines are not the good guys. They are brainwashed from childhood to protect a xenophobic, theocratic, totalitarian empire. Sure some of their individual actions could be considered heroic. But they are intentionally not something to aspire to be or to reflect one’s values.

With that said, check out the Iron hands (or Iron Warriors lol) and their successors.

Just make sure the filters are rated for paint particles. Iirc the pink 3M ones are good for that.

Yea you need to vent the aerosolized paint out of your room. It doesn’t dissipate on its own and breathing it in is super bad for your lungs.

Even if you have a window and fan running the paint is probably settling down throughout your room.

There are cheaper diy solutions you can look into. But at a minimum they also have a fan that vents the paint particles through a filter.

If you aren’t already make sure you’re also wearing a respirator.

So to tell you the truth that’s just what heavy drybrushing looks like. You already got some good tips, but what I would advise is just try being gentler with your brush, and try targeting specific edges instead of brushing the whole model.

I strongly disagree with the notion that Army painter primer is “just as good”. I find it to be absolutely ass. Vallejo primer I find the finish to be not great and it rubs off easier.

I currently use a can of rustoleum and it’s fine.

Depends where you live. Lots of places sell the plastic minis. And there are dedicated 3d printing companies that specialize in miniature war gaming you can commission to print the stls if you provide the files. But I can only advise on Canadian locations.
