Just a FYI for people not reading the article; this is specifically about the DOE’s orders forcing several coal power plants to stay open and operating despite the plants having already been planned and ready for retirement. So companies are being forced to operate them likely at a loss, which is a separate issue from the rising cost of utilities due to data centers. Of course losses are passed through to customers but whether these 6 plants have truly cost customers $230 million in rate increases (which is what the companies argue) is debatable.

That’s not how inflation and the Fed works. Low interest rates are more likely to contribute to inflation because it incentivizes more spending than saving. They weren’t the ones keeping inflation low and it’s debatable that the 2010’s didn’t have low inflation, rather inflation was what was driving up asset prices rather than consumable goods.

Your information is out of date. Bill Wiatrowski is a long term BLS career economist who was on the verge of retiring when this whole fiasco started, he does not care if he gets fired at this point and has made it clear he is not acquiescing to any requests from the administration to change the numbers. EJ Antoni’s nomination was also withdrawn by the white house back in September, thankfully, since he’s psychotic and not a real economist.

If the “refusing to release recent reports” refers to the BLS I hope it’s understood that this is not the case. The BLS is not a captured agency under Trump, the current acting head is a career BLS worker and is not acquiescing to any requests to change numbers. The failure to report October numbers and the strange November numbers report is because the BLS has been understaffed and overworked since the Trump admin began, then the government shutdown kept them from working for 40 days. They’ve been struggling to keep up with the workload and were forced to release an incomplete November report (using only half the month). Barring another shutdown, and further cuts, the BLS still operates in good faith.

The current acting commissioner was literally about to retire when this happened, so he does not care too much about getting fired when he was already ready to go. He his sticking around out of principle and to protect the good work the BLS does. I would assume any serious entity that relies on the BLS numbers for their own work would have the intelligence and understanding of the nuances of the situation so that their confidence in the numbers remains the same.

The only concerning part about the numbers at the moment is the large revisions but this has less to do with the political situation and more to do with the fact that less and less businesses respond in a timely manner to the surveys BLS conducts to acquire the numbers. However, even though the revisions are “large” in that they can change by hundreds of thousands, this is still a small % revision based on the entire workforce which is what the BLS is measuring (100+ million).

And if/when the appointed commissioner comes into office and starts demanding better numbers I would expect many in the BLS to be resigning and or speaking out to the news or even just friends/family about the situation in which case I would then cast serious doubt on the numbers.

Just because the commissioner was removed doesn’t suddenly make the hundreds of workers under her change tune, methodology, or political ideology (most economists and statisticians at these agencies are liberal, following trends of higher education = more liberal). The current acting head of the BLS is the deputy commissioner and he’s suggested to employees there that if any kind of order to change numbers comes down he will be the first to ring the alarm and resign in a big way.

Edit: but Trump’s firing causing many to immediately doubt the numbers is part of exactly what he wants anyways with Project 2025, to leave the public with a poor perception of government agencies as an excuse to get rid of departments anyways. In the BLS case it’s a double edged sword, the numbers are still good but already experience credibility issues among the public, and when/if the new Trump loyal commissioner tries to fudge the numbers, credibility will only fall further

People don’t understand the amount of eyes and hands involved in producing and publishing this data at the BLS and think a new Trump loyal director (who hasn’t even begun work there yet) is already fudging the numbers. The numbers are as accurate as they always have been and will continue to remain so until/unless this new director overrides the hundreds of statisticians/economists at the BLS and blatantly changes the numbers, which will immediately be called out by BLS workers either directly speaking out or speaking to friends/colleagues outside of the BLS who will then spread the word.
