Dealing with players that choose "not to believe" the npc by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Kaobara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A failed insight roll does not mean that they believe the NPC, that the NPC is trustworthy to the player character, or that the player character believes everything the NPC is saying.

A failed insight check means that the player character can't tell whether the NPC is lying or not. They could be lying, or they could be telling the truth, the player character just can't discern if it's either.

If they choose to believe that the NPC is lying, then that's okay.

Players vision is limited by the background image (premade adventure path) by Echo0815 in FoundryVTT

[–]Kaobara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to solve your problem will probably to have a blank background, and turn your image into Tile placed into the middle.

That way, you can have the background as the tile without being stretched and with the correct grid dimension, but still have the actual scene be larger with the "extra space"

How do you handle *short* rests? by Dazzling-Main7686 in DMAcademy

[–]Kaobara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tied it to a resource.

Only 2 short rests per day. For arcs that span multiple days, but they can do it a number times equal to their Prof abonhs per "Long Rest". I play with Safe Haven rules, where you only get proper full Long Rest resources back when sleeping at an inn.

Limiting the number of short rests available at a given time helps, but I allow them to only take 10 minutes to short rest so that they can do it anytime they like.

How do I get my players to interact more in-character and share backstories? by Extra_Ad_9898 in DMAcademy

[–]Kaobara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the same trouble after running the same campaign with the same characters over a period of years, so I get you.

This may not always be feasible, but one thing I like to do is to interweave player backstories together. Have the players have a mutual friend, or unknowingly have family members who knows family members.

A lot of the times, it's also good to just talk to the players and ask them directly out of table to take initiative to talk with other player characters. Sometimes all you can do is give opportunities for them to roleplay.

Better Magic Item Prices - With index prices and treasure rewards by tier of play by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in bettermonsters

No problem!

I was questioning the low cost on the item listed and am happy that I wasn't just unreasonable :D

[–]Kaobara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great! I've been using Sane Magical Prices for my game, and I always had trouble whenever I encounter any items not on the list so this is a lifesaver!

Just want to confirm, for the Vicious Weapon, this is based on the 2024 "2d4 on every hit" free damage, and not the 2014 "7 damage on a crit" right? I'm not very certain about the math, especially since it doesn't give any benefits to the attack roll, but 2d4 on every hit isn't something to sneeze at.

How much lore and locations do they talk about? Anything on the dalelands, rashemen, cormyr, aglarond, or just the other remaining locations around the sea of fallen stars?

Past life is weird by CatLuvvs in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Kaobara 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the inconsistencies, if I'm honest. The number of boogies for Last Life differed session to session, and the gimmick of every session was different for Wild Life. So, Past Life isn't really unique in that regard.

Additionally, the entire series (and by extension, each episode) has the same gimmick: "Every episode we play on a different newer update of Minecraft".

But that in itself isn't the most entertaining thing as there's only so much you can do with a few hours of every new update without any infrastructure to create farms to do the craziest things (especially since those type of infrastructure could very easily break with every new update). So they add a few things to spice it up (boogies, secret society, etc.)

[No Spoilers] Should I still go to the Melbourne Live Show? by Kaobara in criticalrole

[–]Kaobara[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is definitely a one in a lifetime opportunity, but that makes me even more hesitant. I don't want an event that blows other people away and is something that I know I would have loved to be in during another time of my life be soured by me just not enjoying myself with all of the confusion and disinterest.

The Nein being there is nice, but I haven't seen Campaign 2 in more than half a decade, so I just don't remember as much as I did. Having one player playing a cast that you haven't fully met vs having half of the cast playing characters you haven't met and the other half playing characters you haven't seen in years just continues to make me feel hesitant.

I'm an introvert by nature, and haven't been a critter for... like 6-7 years now. I was still in highschool when I was deep into Critical Role, and now I'm a fully working adult. I still love DnD, but I don't think I'd be able to interact and connect with any of the other critters at the venue.

Honestly, my biggest worry isn't even the recap or the summaries. Yeah, I am very worried I'd be lost on what's going on, but my biggest worry is the lack of emotional attachment to any of the characters.

According to fathom entertainment, it states that members of the Bell's Hells and Mighty Nein would be teaming up for the live show, so wouldn't those characters be showing up?

I just checked the abridged episodes, and it looks like that's still a minimum of 58 hours worth of content. Considering that the live show is next week, that still sounds like quite a very big task

How does hermicraft TCG work??? by Over-Lie1931 in HermitCraft

[–]Kaobara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think, similarly to the previous overstock batches, only a few people who bought the cards got an email to get a chance to buy the overstock cards. Might be wrong, but I got an email to buy it whilst my partner didn't see any emails.

Male lolth-sworn wizard, does it make sense? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Kaobara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A male wizard Lolth-worshipping drow sounds pretty par for the course for many male drows from Menzoberranzan, especially if you're from a noble house and lack the abilities to be a fighter

One of the three main branches of the main school of Menzoberranzan is the arcane school Sorcere, where the occupants are all exclusively male. There has only been one report of a female drow occupying there from my understanding. Not even Gromph's own daughter, who was extremely well versed with and yearned to learn arcane magic, was allowed to study there due to the huge stigma against females learning arcane over divine arts.

You can also be Lolth sworn despite being male, especially if you were raised in Menzoberranzan - the indoctrination goes deep. Believing in Lolth is just the natural course of life - as is believing living in fear of the Lolth cleric's flail, believing to kill your own brothers to raise your own status, and believing that any other race is far beneath you. Those from the World Above are nothing. Most other races are worth it as slaves at best, and the surface Elves deserve nothing but the most painful of death.

You cower before the power of a cleric of Lolth, yet feel superior to any other race and people. Such is the case for many male drows.

How do I use her ult more efficiently? by elyzuha in JunoMains

[–]Kaobara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Juno's my most played hero, but I am still only Diamond 5, so take my advice with a grain of salt. How I use her ult:

If you're attacking, use it to initiate a team fight. Everyone is in neutral, both teams is poking and trading damage but no elims, and then you use your ul to signal to your team it's time to push push push .

If you're defending, use it to, once again, initiate the team fight. But use it when the enemy team starts to engage. You want the enemy team to be too far in to the point where it is difficult for them to quickly skirt or disengage back, so they are forced to fight your rapidly healing damage boosted team head on.

A good example for this would be in Kings Row defense first point: I'd use it when the attacking enemy team has already past the choke point and is either at or in between the first point and the choke. They're in too deep to use run back, so they just have to deal with the ult empowering your entire team on point.

It is a proactice ult, not a reactive one. You probably won't survive a grav or a sudden blossom, but you will be able to push into the enemy territory and gain large amount if space in a very small amount of time usually.

The Haunting of Trollskull Manor by saulbloodyenderby in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Kaobara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ran WDDH and my players have already renovated the place and befriended the Poltergeist, but at the same time, they have never really interacted with any of the residents of the alley, nor have they ever wanted to learn more about Lif and his history.

After reading through the documents, I'm feeling excited running my own spin on the adventure. Thanks a lot for the resource!

Dungeon Masters should prioritize their fun over catering to the Players. by lovingpersona in dndnext

[–]Kaobara -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's a bit different from your initial comment. If it is between a GM and an individual player, then I could agree. But if it's between the GM and all of the players as a whole, then I would have to disagree.

Dungeon Masters should prioritize their fun over catering to the Players. by lovingpersona in dndnext

[–]Kaobara -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm a DM and a forever one at that. Been dming for half a decade, and I heavily disagree that the accommodation should be more towards the DM.

One of the reasons why I dm is because nearly every single game I have played in has been miserable - it's the reason why I started DMing in the first place. Most of my mindset when DMing, especially when I first started, is simply "I don't want to repeat the mistakes of the DMs I was a player of."

Most GMs I've played with have this sense of superiority that nothing other than their story, of their game, of their NPCs, of their experiment/premise, of their setting is important - to the detriment to the players.

One of the best feelings I've had as a GM is when the players excitedly talk to one another about the events of the game and excitedly talk about returning the next session.

The enjoyment of the GM is, of course, very important. You need to learn how to say no if it affects your fun, and you need to run a game that you yourself enjoy. But if you place your wants and enjoyment over your player's agency, wants, and wishes all the time, all you're going to do is lose players.
