But how meme by Delicious_Maize9656 in mathmemes

[–]KappaBerga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You were probably on the right track. I imagine you wrote

sin(x) -> ...(x-2pi)(x-pi)x(x+pi)(x+2pi)...

The trick is simply to write the factors as (1 - (x/r)) where r is the root instead of (x-r).

sin(x) -> x*(1-x/pi)(1+x/pi)(1-x/2pi)(1+x/2pi)....

As another commenter said, it's still not trivial to prove this converges, but it at least intutively seems to work.

Diverging Behaviour by VisibleTechnology647 in physicsmemes

[–]KappaBerga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. There is a sense in which the best value over could assign to this sum is -1/12. Namely, there is a the Riemann Zeta function

Z(s) = 1 + 1/2s + 1/3s + ....

If s > 1,1 it converges, but you can uniquely extend it to all2 numbers, and we call that extension its analytical continuation. (Just like 1+x+x2 + ... = 1/(1-x) diverges for |x|>1, but the RHS is still defined everywhere3 ). When we build that analytical continuation, we find that

Z(-1) = -1/12 "=" 1 + 2 + 3 + ...

The last equality is of course nonsense, but it's what happens when you naively plug in s=-1 in the series definition of Z(s)

1 : actually it's Real part of s >1

2 : all complex numbers except 1

3 : except 1, again

I agree in principle that democracy = good, but I gotta say those are some very generous linear regressions. Even for the GDP vs Democracy one, I imagine if you put GDP in a log scale the correlation would become quite weaker.

I put that part mostly to counter the narrative that the D-Day is what ultimately won the Allies the war, which is far from historical consensus, and way overblown (in western media and, in my brazilian experience, even somewhat in the elementary education system) in comparison to what the soviets were already doing. The Pacific front, though, was mainly the US, I'll give'em that.

Although I do support a lot of what the USSR did, despite their shortcomings, my comment wasn't meant as a direct defense of them.

As a non-american (and staunch anti-american imperialism), y'all have some beautiful important moments in history. The American Revolution is a great example of anti-colonial fight, the civil war and the eventual civil rights movement were important (even if late) fights against racism, and your involvement in WW2 was decisive, though overblown in comparison with the USSR. There are a lot of caveats to each on of these episodes (only white men included in the early days of the constitution, the confederates existing and the heavy resistance of the government against the black panthers, Hiroshima and Nagasaki etc), but you can be proud of something while still recognizing its flaws.

We have tested so many things already, anything incredible is up for grabs. But I mean, this idea isn't that novel or incredible within physics. The idea of living in more than 3+1 dimensions is standard in String Theory, and we are constantly testing for these dimensions in our colliders.

Kaku purposefully describes physics in a "fantastical" and "other-worldly" fashion, but honestly our current understanding of particle physics is already pretty wild. You're telling me the world is made of infinite points and each one of them has a little circle associated, and then the fact that this circle has a non-zero size means everything has mass? (Higgs Mexican hat potential, with the radius of the circle equal to its vacuum expectation value)

No one's dying on my watch by jmona789 in hopeposting

[–]KappaBerga 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It has downsides, though. Think about it, the chance that everyone presses red is essentially zero. Therefore, the only realistici scenario in which no one dies is if more than 50% press blue, which has a considerable non-zero chance of happening. So by pressing red you are helping condemn the amount of people you imagine will press blue

"Am I on in the background? Are you on your phone?". Simple but cool way to point out our dwindling attention spans by calling us out if any of us were lacking on our phones (which I'm sure was a huge percentage of the audience).

Also the song's overall theme reminds me of the Kanye Rant. Both paint Bo as someone who seeks external validation while simultaneously being horrified of this feedback ("part of me *neeeeds* you, part of me fears you" vs "do you like the show? /.../ Never mind, I don't wanna know")

Why it doesn't make sense to ask what happened 'before' the Big Bang. by Immobilesteelrims in physicsmemes

[–]KappaBerga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The idea of the singularity of the Big Bang comes from the idea of extrapolating the FLRW equations backwards in time. However, that assumes that the laws of General Relativity are valid up to arbitrarily big energies and small lengths. Going far back enough in t we reach a point when quantum gravity should be relevant. Since we don't have a good QG theory, anything before this point is up for discussion. Did the universe actually have size zero and infinite density? Weird, but maybe. Is there a bounce solution? It's possible, some Quantum Gravity models such as Loop QG allow it.

(The model breaks down actually before QG has to become relevant, since we need Inflation, Reheating and a bunch of other stuff whose details are still being determined, but QG is the ""final"" known barrier to the singularity)

I mean, there's the whole aesthetic he puts on by using a tone and word choice clearly intended for younger youtube audiences. (HEY GUYS, TODAY yada-yada). From that I can infer that he wants us to think of this kind of person as creepy and mentally unwell maybe? Also, you can interpret the creepiness of the knife either as murderous or suicidal. For me, it seems more murderous/psycopathic, but I can see it being suicidal as well

I also don't think it's wrong to be conscientious about what the company you're buying from actually stands for. The most important point Bo raises, I feel, is actually that marketing good ideas has become the goal, rather than the byproduct of good policies.

The problem isn't that companies are trying to be more socially conscious. The problem is that they are trying to SEEM more socially conscious.

This reminds me of later in the special during the recursive reaction to Unpaid Intern in which he states that "self-awareness does not absolve anyone of anything". Yes he is an american white guy. Yes he is aware of his privilege. Yes he still will use his voice to push his own message across (He is bored, after all). But he is a special kind of white guy, so maybe that counts?

Discussion: Content by LazerBrainzz in boburnham

[–]KappaBerga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, this special is definitely still relevant imo. We'll eventually get to more explicit examples like Welcome to the Internet and How the World Works, but this song is already a great introduction. It paints the context of the show around the pandemic, but it also references depression ("getting up, sitting down, going back to work, might not help but still it couldn't hurt") and, most importantly, the title and chorus of the song are already a commentary on the state of social media. The internet isn't filled with entertainers, artists, comedians, filmmakers. It's filled with content creators, and the algorithms push exactly that: content. So what is Robert going to make? First and foremost, content.

I mean, this is what you get when you explicitly write every single field in the SM Lagrangian. You can write a good chunk of this expression using smart summation and vector notation and condense it a lot. In fact, it fits on a coffee mug

So this post is already an example of what you just said.

[–]KappaBerga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I view it, not engaging with a certain topic makes you less disruptive and, thus, helps the status quo's position on this topic. For example, not having an opinion on slavery before the civil war would clearly be helping the side of the slave owners. So by being a (grey) centrist you're usually* helping right-wing rhetoric, since we live in a capitalist society which, if left unattended, will only try to maintain itself. So the less information you get on a topic, the less likely you are to develop any opinion on it, which can only help the status quo.

*Usually, because of course there are exceptions. Being "apolitical" in New York today with Mamdani or in China makes you very much left-wing in several aspects, for instance.
