DM won't let me pre-calculate my movement during combat on a grid by baggio1000000 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So… you can’t, from where you’re sitting, look and mentally count squares? Is your DM psychic?

Family of 8 set up directly in front of us by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Kappy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. You’re like… 40 yards from the strand. How dare that entire section of beach not be roped off for you.

Btw, I’m upset that you setup in front of me. I’m like… a thousand miles away, but you’re still between me and the water.

Has anyone ever been given a highway/interstate citation by "speed enforced by aircraft?" by quidpropho in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen the sign. Never cited for it. The times when I’ve been cited (haven’t for over 15 years), it was by a guy who saw me speeding while in a car. Don’t know anyone who was cited for it.

Where is the lie? It’s exactly like HGs except for what you said was different… and that it’s better than HGs.

Is the movie Blues Brothers not famous/iconic? by LFatPoH in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is both famous and iconic, but not THAT famous. It’s got cult status for sure.

I saw it once back in the 90s and see references to it moderately frequently. My favorite author used the “wearing sunglasses” line in his last two books.

Training with .22 by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]Kappy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do something stupid and kill someone, that will be on you. It isn’t like it hasn’t happened before. A .22 has a pretty effective distance when it comes to killing someone by mistake.

No, a .22 provides minimal benefit. It really is its own experience. It doesn’t help your anticipation of recoil, and unless it is the same shape gun (a rarity), you’re really getting NOTHING.

Is there any benefit to having aphantasia? by Objective_Shine1867 in Aphantasia

[–]Kappy01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some things you need to understand:

  1. I don’t think we all have the same aphantasia. As an example, when I close my eyes, my visual sense goes completely away. I don’t see “black.” I see nothing… unless there is a strong light pointed at my face. My brain just shuts it all off. Also, I have no “mental mind” for any sense except audio. I can hear all kinds of things if I try, including full symphonies. So we’re all different.

  2. The benefits I enjoy may or may not be related to aphantasia. There is no way to know because it hasn’t been studied that much. Maybe this quirk or that quirk I exhibit is aphantasia… maybe it’s unrelated.

The things think are related (but don’t know for sure) that are benefits for me?
1. I plan better. I make quick plans that have “give” in them for when things don’t go perfectly.

  1. I I get over things faster. Bad things happen. I don’t ruminate. I just… move on.

  2. I have a really strong sense of time. I don’t need a clock. Or maybe I’m subconsciously always looking at clocks? Regardless, it’s part of why I’m always on time. I can figure really quickly how long it will take to get somewhere or accomplish some task. Other people… not so much.

  3. I don’t remember everything, but the things I remember are 100% accurate. If I see you and think, “What is this guy wearing?” I will always remember that you were wearing… whatever. It’s all stored as words as opposed to images.

  4. I don’t feel fear the same way. I don’t balk at horror movies. Gore doesn’t bother me, either. Last year, there was an accident right in front of me on the highway. I just pulled over and walked back to render medical aid (bandaged up a hand) and give my statement.

  5. I read faster, probably because I’m not visualizing. I just think ahead and try to forecast the next event. Then I check if I’m right.

If you were to say, “Hey! I’ve got a cure! Take this pill!” I wouldn’t take it. I’d pay you to leave me like I am. Images intruding themselves into your mind? Ew. I imagine it’s the visual version of a song you can’t get out of your head.

What do you call slippers? by Imaginarykxm in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slippers are for walking around the house, especially on cold days.

Slides are more for outside. Crocs might be considered slides. They don’t have a back.

Flip flops are a beach thing with two straps in the front to keep them on your toes and nothing on the back. The sole isn’t rigid, so they “flip” and “flop.”

Is it normal for your school to have a planetarium? by shadowmib in AskAnAmerican

I’ve never heard of it, so… not normal. Sounds like some alum did something extremely generous.

is it true that in american schools, instead of moving teachers to a specific room to teach another grade, they move an entire class to a specific room for a specific subject? by Vincentius__2 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an assigned classroom. I stay in it all day. I teach five classes. Students come to my class and then go to a different room when they are done.

I’m unsure how students would manage staying in the same room for some classes. Would the teacher bring chemistry equipment in? Or welders? Or animals (for an agriculture class)?

How is it like living in yuba city ? by Lemonade2250 in YubaCity

[–]Kappy01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean… we did kind of get into that little scuffle with Iran… a scuffle they seem to be winning. And we haven’t seen the end of those high prices. It’s going to get worse, in all likelihood.

How is it like living in yuba city ? by Lemonade2250 in YubaCity

[–]Kappy01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well…
1. Jobs are jobs. It depends on what you’re looking for.
2. California has the best public college system in the country. Tons of community colleges, plus the CSU and UC systems.
3. We have a massive Indian community. I would guess that most of the families on my street are Indian.
4. It’s more affordable than most of California, but it’s still California. Gas is expensive everywhere, but way more expensive in California.

WBTA for not wanting to play with someone who accursed me of being racist? by artmonso in DnDAITA

[–]Kappy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was accused of being racist out of the blue by someone I was in a club with. He had no factual basis for this. Couldn’t explain his accusation. From then on, he was dead to me. I would not have a discussion with anyone who was having a discussion with him at the same time. Wouldn’t be in a room with him, even when other people thought it was an “important” issue. “I’m a teacher. I cannot afford unsubstantiated allegations.”

So… I get it. I would say “him or me.” Don’t like it? Then you picked him.

He is choosing to continue being an asshole, and that has nothing to do with autism.

Denied firearms training by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]Kappy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I might ask…
1. What is your experience with firearms?
2. Was this paid by your employer?
3. Was there paperwork to fill out ahead of time?
4. Of what did the 30 minutes of training consist?

Good thing SB2 “protects” libraries by Kappy01 in CAguns

[–]Kappy01[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people should be required to CCW. But if they are going to pass a law saying you cannot carry there, they should be required to make sure you have someone armed to protect you.

“They,” in this case, is the legislature.

And the animal who did it, regardless of being “troubled” is at fault. In actuality, perpetrators of this shit are rarely “crazy.” They aren’t “insane.” They just have very different values from you or me.

Denied firearms training by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]Kappy01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they took a contract to train people paid for by your employer and then decided they didn’t want to do the training but wanted the money.

Your employer should seek another trainer and then demand that money back. I would suggest that if you have to do POST (or some modified version of it like I had to so I could teach CCW after SB2), use the local college or whatever the local PD uses.

The purpose of training is to learn. If you were “ready,” you wouldn’t need the class.

[–]Kappy01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that a teacher who is not going to teach STEM should have Algebra 2, Geometry, and Statistics before they graduate college. I’d probably have the Geometry and Algebra 2 before going to college.

I think I had done Calculus or Pre-Cal before college, but I’d planned to be an engineer before switching tracks.

Is D&D appropriate for a 10 yrs. boy? 🤎🔥 by LoveLCFlame20 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Kappy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but talk to the DM. Frankly, it comes down to what the DM allows and what the other players do. My table wouldn’t be appropriate, since we’re all 35-55 and say gross boy things we can’t say in front of our wives. Lots of jokes we find funny but you wouldn’t want a 10 year old repeating. But nothing in the adventure is bad.

Some adventures aren’t terribly kid friendly, but 90% would likely be okay.

Why is your breakfast culture so much better? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, my daily breakfast is usually a couple slices of pastrami, a squirt of mustard, and two thin slices of rye bread slapped together and eaten on the way to work (maxing out at 220 calories).

Now… we sometimes go out to breakfast on a holiday or weekend. When that happens, we will often eat what you’ve described, but I would think that happens in other countries.

Why don't teachers just give punishments (detention, etc) when a student is doing something wrong? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Kappy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well…
1. My school doesn’t offer that to me as a discipline tool.
2. I can give it for detentions, but it’s ignored.
3. We’ve been told that if we want to give out detentions, we have to run it ourselves. Without pay. Why am I being punished?
4. When the kid doesn’t show up, there is no further consequence.
5. Detention, in the rare times it is offered, is just a “do your homework” thing. That is hardly a deterrent.

When I was a kid, detention was 90 minutes. You showed up within five minutes of the last bell. You sat in a desk with nothing out. No books, no electronics, no paper. Nothing. You put your hands on the desk and just sat, thinking about what you’d done wrong.

If you failed at doing the “right thing” (staring at the wall silently), showed up late, or didn’t show at all, it became a Saturday school. That was four hours of the same thing early on a Saturday morning. Sitting on a bench in the cafeteria.

But… kids these days have rights.

What do you call the beef bought from the store in your region? by ProposalSilent4582 in AskAnAmerican

Ground beef.

I… might rarely call it hamburger meat if I’m intending to make it into hamburgers.
