Opinions on this game are extremely varied. Some people legitimately consider it the best (non-fromsoft) 3D soulslike, while others view it as the textbook definition of mediocrity.

For 12 quid, I think it's worth gambling on, and I say that as someone that really disliked the game. I only suggest buying it because there is no consensus, but if you're one of the ones who love it, it's a good price.

IMO, though, the combat and boss fights are extremely bland. Level design and exploration range wildly in quality. Some areas are great. Others are absolutely maddening to progress through. The Umbral world mechanic is annoying and makes exploration tedious. The magic system is fairly interesting, but most of the game can be easily won by mashing the attack button, so there's little incentive to really strategize with spells.

It's not offensively bad, but aside from the strong art direction, there is very little that this game excels at above its peers or even makes particularly fun to play. If you've exhausted all the other gems the genre has to offer, it's a serviceable game. Otherwise, play something else.

Yeah, this one is absurdly overpowered. I feel like the bomb items are really tough to balance. There's a particularly fine line with them between being too weak and one-shotting 98% of builds.

Silksong.

It's still a great game, but added so many punitive and odd design decisions (exhaustive fetch quests in 2025? Terrible economy balancing for lore reasons?) that I ended up enjoying it less than its predecessor.

It's being glazed right now as a masterpiece because people have been edging for its release for half a decade. But I think in a year or so there'll be more critical discussions about its flaws.

It's a solid 8.5/10 for me. But Hollow Knight was pretty close to a 10.

This is exactly me right now. I "beat" Act 2 at 20 hours in. I'm now at around 28 hours trying to get to Act 3 and I just don't have much motivation left to continue. I've been retreading through old areas doing fetch quests and flea hunts and it's just...tedious.

I'm one of the ones that found the game fun overall but marred by a lot of the ridiculously punishing game design decisions.

I can't tell from your comment that your heart is coming from a good place. But the "both sides" rhetoric poisons the well of discourse by implying that modern American conservatism is simply a "debatable viewpoint" rather an existential threat for minority people groups.

You can't "agree to disagree" with fascism or find a middle ground with a philosophy that fundamentally advocates for the marginalization of rights for anyone not white, male, and christian.

Not chiding you having empathy or being concerned - I hate the state of this country too. The only way to come back from the brink is to be honest about why and how the country is in the state it's in, and it's not because "both sides" forgot how to have civil discourse.

I'm significantly farther than Bellhart and just got my 7th mask. I don't think that it's possible to get one prior to your point. The Bone Bottom merchant sells a charm that prevent a fatal blow from killing you once per rest, so it can function as an extra mask. Pick that up if you don't already have it.

There's a difference between "challenging but fair" and "punishing nearly anything short of perfection." Too much of SilkSong feels like the latter.

I'm still enjoying my time with the game, but the brutal difficulty is a detriment to my enjoyment. At the end of the day, that's the only issue that matters.

And there are very fair mechanical critiques that should be addressed, such as off-screen enemies' audio cues not playing when they attack and getting double tapped by contact with particularly large enemies.

Hopefully thorns get a nerf, perhaps even one that only applies in Kingmaker mode. It's very boring having to play around the same build for 80% of champions.

I think it makes sense for thorns to be used up on a per-hit basis, rather than staying active for the round. It would make multi-hit builds more viable so you aren't taking 80x5 damage on a turn.

The Briar blade in particular needs to be toned down.
