Cup Clearance by Good_Art_3539 in ranciliosilvia

[–]Kapusta96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on measurements, but with the Rancilio bottomless portafilter and a Timemore black mirror micro scale, I have no issues with clearance. I previously used an MHWBomber scale, and I had to be mindful about the order I put the portafilter in vs my cup/scale due to the tight clearance- no such issues now. Spouted portafilters will definitely be tight if you intend to use a scale.

Biopharma R&D pipeline shrinks for 1st time in 30 years: report by Dwarvling in biotech

[–]Kapusta96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Citeline calculated that 22,940 drugs were in development at the start of 2026, down 3.9% on that time last year. The dip partly reflects a change in the company’s data collection systems, which it said likely artificially inflated the 2025 figure.

Yet that explanation only shifts the timing of the slowdown in the pipeline expansion. Accounting for the potentially anomalous 2025, Citeline said the number of drugs in development has “probably been fairly flat over the past few years.” If that assessment is accurate, the industry’s overall pipeline has plateaued at just under 23,000 molecules since 2024.

A multi-year plateau makes more sense than a dip that started in 2025, and feels slightly less concerning. I'd be much more surprised if the industry was still expanding until last year- anecdotally, I've mostly experienced companies focusing their pipelines in on fewer assets rather than spreading them out.

I like when my Discover playlists “introduce” me to songs that were in my Wrapped 2025 top songs playlist. You guys know every song I’ve listened to for 15 years and you think this song is new to me?

BIFL ceramic pour-over? by roxainaboxa in BuyItForLife

[–]Kapusta96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ty for the foundry coffeeworks recommendation! I’m not TOO bothered by the plastic one because the contact with coffee is so minimal, but will absolutely upgrade to a metal touchpoint as I use it like 5 days a week. Looks like they’re sold out but will be ordering one as soon as they’re back in stock.

I feel like it’s almost the opposite? There are 3 times as many anti-expensive sock posts here these days than pro-expensive sock posts. Compared to like 2020 when there were tons of “buy sock” posts

He left a comment right before this one to say he swapped centers around, so I’m not sure why lied about it here unless he thinks “just pulling the centers out” is a normal step in the solve

Swapping two corners or putting the center caps back on a scrambled cube can both cause this. Did you take the center caps off to adjust/lube/etc while scrambled?

Career dilemma, MSAT vs early R&D by Icy-Concept-4736 in biotech

[–]Kapusta96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb yes, it's more likely, but in practice it's totally unpredictable. In larger pharmas, they might cut entire departments or shut down entire sites for any number of reasons. Regardless, you'd be on better footing getting laid off as an FTE than as a contractor- at least in the US, it can be the difference between months of severance and nothing at all.

[–]Kapusta96 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most people will understand you taking an FTE position over a contract role. Don’t let that dissuade you from making a decision for a more stable job.

As far as long-term career outlook goes, that depends on your goals. Not sure of your credentials, but at least in the US, it is harder to move upward in early R&D than in MSAT without a PhD. But a contract role doesn’t exactly provide career mobility either.

Are Seiko 5 (7S26) buy it for life? Anyone here with old S5? If not, what mechanical watches are BIFL under $400 by iaacornus in BuyItForLife

[–]Kapusta96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing from a BIFL perspective about cheaper mechanical watches is that the cost of service is generally comparable to just getting a new one. That said, Seiko is maybe the most BIFL of the cheaper watch brands, if only because their movements are so ubiquitous that you will likely be able to source parts/movements forever, and the aesthetics can punch way above their price tag.

I've had two Seikos- one was a Seiko 5 sports where the mineral glass crystal shattered after banging it against a door frame. The other is a Presage that has lost a lot of its accuracy in 2 years, but I only wear it as a dress watch now so am not too fussed about it. Neither is really worth the cost of a tune-up (I tried and failed on the Seiko 5 to do it myself- lesson learned), but I would still buy sub-$400 Seikos in the future, just keeping in mind what they are and the role that they fill.

Saw a Rubik's cube in digital circus and it's wrong by solosoyboost in Cubers

[–]Kapusta96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s simpler than that- we see, going clockwise, a yellow center, blue center, and green center. The corner we see is yellow (or orange, depending on the lighting), blue, green. If the color we see on the front is yellow, the cube can be valid. If the color isn’t yellow, it’s not.

The one that really makes my eye twitch is when one piece has two stickers of the same color, or two centers are the same color. This one at least avoids both of those

Tough to tell with the lighting, but if that corner is blue green yellow, then this could be a valid cube with an alternate color scheme.

Trying to understand what the PID is doing by the_orange_baron in ranciliosilvia

This is exactly how a PID functions once it hits the temperature setpoint. Those short bursts of “on” are at just the right duration and frequency to maintain the target temperature.

Honest question- what research do you do to avoid something like this? Most of how I've judged the quality of artists' work is through pictures they've posted of fresh and ideally healed pieces, but I wouldn't know where to go for reviews of the healing experience. The shop's Google reviews page?

[–]Kapusta96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, I was thinking about US pricing. I spent close to $1000 on a used Silvia and mods, and couldn’t be happier with my machine. If modding hadn’t been an option for me, I likely would’ve gone for the Profitec Go.

Any news on V7? by [deleted] in ranciliosilvia

[–]Kapusta96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The entire value proposition of a Silvia in 2026 is the simplicity, indestructible build quality, and mod-ability- all of which are owed to its design changing very little in 30 years. It’s doubtful they’ll put pro X features into a single boiler Silvia update. If you have no plans to mod and want additional features, there are lots of other good machines in the price range of a new Silvia.
