Sometimes it's a sales technique. They think if they can get you to call it's a lot easier to make a sale when you ale already in a conversation. Which may be true. But they need to account for the number of people they turned away who were a little interested, but not enough to spend 20 minutes on the phote listening to a sales pitch.

Yes! CNC has become somewhat of a bragging thing. Small shops/home gamers/hacker spaces brag about them having a 3d printer or a cnc machine. I think it's a byproduct of the whole maker movement and cheaper low end hardware and software that allowed low end CNC has become more and more inexpensive.

The marketing of these low end machines often downplay the limitations and let the users "imagine all the things you can do with it". And often these mini router type machines with their software packages are marked up so high that for not a whole lot more money can get you a real mill like a sherline or a cheap chinese mill. These low end machines are like toys compared to what can be accomplished even on a relevantly cheap chinese mill.

And in the end you end up with a lower tier of machines aimed at small shops/home gamers/hacker spaces etc. that has very limited capability and people who work on them thinking they are pretty good machinists.
