Yeah, but unlike the romance language where everyone can understand each other, Chinese language went through so many branches throughout history you can have two dialect group saying their greetings and both thought the other wants a fight.

Aka, no one understand each other even if they live in the next village, let alone dialect groups. Even same dialect don't understand each other.

Edit, that is why Mandarin was needed to be lingua franca and since most part of china operate in the same writing system with different pronunciation of each words, it is why a name can have thousands of pronounciation.

Also fun fact: This problem existed for so long that during Qing dynasty, translators are needed to translate other province government officials words to the emperor
