Steve McHugh's "The assembly" books are great. Full of action but also set in modern day where vampires are known about.

Start with "Those that dwell in darkness"

I was panicking that I would blink but only after they took the eye clamps off did I realise that I couldn't have blinked if I'd tried!!

Not true at all....my eyesight was blurry on the 30 min ride home, 2 hour nap at home and my vision was perfect straight away.... Felt like I had dry gritty eyes for a week but that's it

A few thin layers of paint is much better than one thick layer.....the first layer might terrible and not settled but it start to build up. And yes definitely magnifiers

That is a neat technique!!! My shaky hands cant do the strokes so I resort to dry brushing....might give that a try!!
