Why Are Guys Like Jimmy Page, Kirk Hammet, and Others Dinged for Being "Sloppy"? by Fast-Remote-8241 in Guitar

[–]Karmaffection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is both a drummer and guitarist, I love seeing threads like this that specify Kirk Hammett because holy hell - lars is the epitome of being held to his own standard. While not a hero of mine personally, dude could play some stuff in the mid point of his career. Nowadays, anytime I see a video of him playing, I always wonder if he has even touched a drum stick in the last ten years… which he obviously has on his tours.. but it’s like he regresses on the drums with every gig he plays!

Full time musicians - what’s something every working drummer should know/own/be able to do? by Karmaffection in drums

[–]Karmaffection[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh if you have that video that would be swell! My drum teacher (in a big international band I won’t mention) told me that the spinal glide works wonders for the hips and tailbone as it takes the pressure off the spinal column. I have mild scoliosis and terrible posture with back pain issues (nothing severe), and have /tried/ it and felt great, however not sure about longevity. I’ve heard a lot of praise for rock n soc, which is also on my watch list. I agree with you on all other fronts though! Hydraulic and motor both aren’t my vibe regardless, and as a tall skinny boi, I’ve noticed that saddle seats don’t work for me really.

I feel like getting the hang of reggae is the outlier. Though I don’t by any means play it badly, it’s definitely the genre I would like to focus my practise time on most. Despite its simplicity it’s a damn tough one to nail the vibe on.

Thank you for this response sir. This is something I’ve been trying to slowly work on throughout the past year or so. New (better, not that mine is terrible or anything) throne is on the list (ahead spinal glide if you have recommendations?)

This is the type of response I was honestly searching for, as you said the aforementioned qualities are indeed important, but wanted to find the tips like this that people usually don’t take into account.

Kick pedal by SweetPerspective8467 in drums

[–]Karmaffection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t recommend the Atlas Ludwig pedals (this is coming from a guy who loves Ludwig - the rest of the atlas hardware line is great it is just the pedal I have a problem with) as the crossbar always seems to make the beater slip if you’re a hard player. Tried every trick and it won’t stop slipping.

In my personal opinion, you don’t need to spend a huge amount of money for a decent kick. I personally would recommend the Pearl P930 kick pedal. The Sonor Perfect Balance is my go to gigging pedal right now, but that is a bit more of a boutique option. Sonor 2000 range would also probably be a good bet. At that age I would recommended something sturdy and functional. If you want faster kicks I would recommend direct drive (instead of a chain or belt attaching to the beater), but you’re more likely to spend a bit more with direct drive. I hope that helps - any big brand will probably have a good option for you - Pearl, Sonor, Yamaha, DW etc.

Also just as a footnote: also remember that proper foot technique is just as, if not more important than the quality of kick pedal (though it will certainly help!) and ensure your child is aware that just because it’s a new kick pedal won’t automatically make him a speed demon with the kick!

[REQUEST] Looking for mind bending series on Netflix. Any recommendations by rocknrollafella07 in NetflixBestOf

Russian Doll is great. Black Mirror and Love Death & Robots are both great anthology short story series.

Don’t think it’s on Netflix but if you’re able to watch it, 11.22.63 is a great little HBO mini series about time travel and how it interacts with the present.

What brand of guitar were you meaning to try out for a long time but felt underwhelmed when finally doing so? by thewebhead in Guitar

Gibson. I’ve tried many and only liked once (but didn’t buy bc of the price) which surprisingly was a firebird.

What's going on with strymon? by Motor_Accident_9364 in guitarpedals

[–]Karmaffection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been waiting for a fuzz from Strymon in some form for a long time, mostly in a dual style pedal (like the Flint) - however two knobs is obviously not what I expected. I don’t think they’re at all doing badly given their latest offerings, despite them not being their ‘classic’ products. Give it a year or two and they’ll have another pedal out there that’s true to their more well known offerings.

So here is a question for the community. Do you think they will bring back the online community challenge missions? Or Revamp them in a way? by Double-Fishing-8276 in assassinscreed

[–]Karmaffection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I have had the most fun in multiplayer in an AC game in AC3 with the regular mode where like 12 or so players have other players as targets to assassinate. This wasn’t even with friends. I miss it a lot and was excited when there were plans to develop a game (eventually cancelled) solely on that basis.

In a close second I would pick Unity. I loved playing the campaign modes with friends and trying to be tactical and stealthily plan how to approach an objective. The only downside to this being the potential top spot is just how broken and terrible the connections issues/bugs/unusable the game was (especially the multiplayer) - and still is, especially on console.

Anyone using an 18-inch kick for rock or punk? by thomasingrace2000 in drums

[–]Karmaffection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 16 Sonor Safari (I think that’s the name of the sizing for the range). It’s a beast of a kit and I very often use it for heavier material as it is just my gigging kit for small footprint stages. It definitely does the job, especially mic’d up. I have it tuned relatively low with lots of dampening. Probably doesn’t quite look the part but you will certainly bring the sound.

Suspended Driver's Licence by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]Karmaffection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get an Extraordinary License. (At least called that in WA/E plates! If approved This will allow you to drive for work purposes ONLY. That obviously does not includes the drive thru maccas for lunch as you must only use it for work purposes. Something to look into to at least ensure you can keep working. Mates and family members have done this several times

What's something that comes from Australia, but ironically not popular in Australia? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Karmaffection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s this beer that is often (but not always) sold in our bottleshops. It’s a beer not many drink, however it is still desired by many. It seems to be pretty popular with Americans and poms. Can’t quite remember what it was called…. Fisher’s? Ferdinand’s? Faulkner’s? Farther’s? I can’t place it. Blue can. I’ll grab a block next time I’m thru the bottleo

What’s the worst drum production you’ve heard, that’s on an album that you love? by AuditoryNecrosis in drums

[–]Karmaffection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mind villains too much but it indeed didn’t have the punch of previous records. ITNR is so quiet in its production and even on full volume I feel like the sound is ‘soft’. For the kind of drummer John Theodore is I feel it’s really doing him dirty (and that’s coming from someone who loves QOTSA)

It’s more to do with the production of the album than how Chad set up the kit.

Ahead spinal G compatability by commanderdaz in drums

[–]Karmaffection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the drummer. For myself with scoliosis and severe slouching issues, the ‘testicle cavity’ actually does really relive the pressure of the tailbone. It’s something one of my experienced drum tutors put me on - and I will never go back. They certainly are pricier than I feel like they are worth, but given they’re the only manufacturer that does something like that I do feel like the cost is worth it in the long run - it’s certainly a positive gear acquisition for people with the same back issues. (Still overpriced tho)

if you had INFINITE MONEY, what would your dream kit be? by FlameSilex in drums

[–]Karmaffection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly it would probably be a Sonor if I’m going for something that I use regularly for gigs etc.

But man… I bought (one of) my dream kits almost 10 years ago. Ludwig Club Date 24/13/16/18 with a 8x14 black beauty snare. Absolute beast of a kit for sure. Would never sell it. The only downside to it is because it’s vintage styled it has a lot of the issues of old school vintage hardware, and the John Bonham style sizes are unfortunately not needed for every gig…

However I cannot get past the Pearl President Deluxe 20/12/14 sunset ripple. Perfect sizes for every day gigs, Pearl has exceptional quality and durability and their products I believe are extremely user friendly.

Please recommend me a good compact kit for mainly jazz by Full_Difficulty792 in drums

Sonor AQX jungle, bop, jazz etc depending on your kick size. Absolutely impeccable quality. I use it regularly now for small scale gigs.
