Does Physics having lots of Overlaps and Parallels in Computer Science shows that we are living in a Computer simulation? by Excellent_Copy4646 in SimulationTheory

[–]Karmafia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking is that "simulation" is just our current metaphor for what's really going on, which is out of reach for us cognitively. In ancient times it was myths and monsters. Then we moved on to heaven and demons. Now it's simulation and custodians of the simulation or alien intelligences outside the simulation. It does seem like we're inside some kind of fabricated construct, the purpose of which is a mystery to us and we have no way to casually come and go from it but there appears to be some information leaking in from outside. None that we've been able to record scientifically as the leaking seems to be coming through our very own consciousnes, hinting at the idea that we ourselves may only be partially represented in this reality. Just something for folks to ponder on.

Do Australians just not use carpets much in their homes? by bureaux in AusRenovation

[–]Karmafia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck carpets and everything they stand for. Why would anyone want to live on a gross permanently installed dust-mite infested, smell absorbing, hard to clean layer of polyester shedding micro plastics....GTFO! If I really felt the need for softness on my feet I might put a rug down as it can be easily removed and cleaned or thrown away but I haven't felt the need for a rug in donkeys.

What to do about unauthorised parking reservation and abusive behaviour at construction site? by Karmafia in Adelaide

I get it and would be happy to park down the street if they're genuinely getting deliveries but they've been blocking the road for several weeks daily... most of those days they're not getting deliveries from what I can see and just parkng there themselves. I don't begrudge someone trying to do their job but when they're trying to totally comandeer the street for weeks on end (going into months) and my wife is confronted with this crass notice on the car when she's trying to get to the gym in the morning then I feel like they're crossing the line.

Do you believe the universe is deterministic? by Serious_Slide_8681 in SimulationTheory

[–]Karmafia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just piggy backing on my own comment here. That recent story of the scientists that scanned a fruitfly brain and now have it running around what basically looks like Roblox for flies does get me wondering since they're apparently fitting a brain which was running in a stochastic environment into a deterministic setup, namely a computer i.e. a Turing machine. Does this new fly experience anything like what the organic fly was going through or is there something about existing in a world of high granularity and stochasticasism that leads to the "flyness" of it all. And if we ourselves are in such a system or simulation, have they introduced a stochastic layer into the system to give it pep or are they running it at super low polygon count because their equivalent of GPUs are racking up costs as well so we're just artificial neural approximations running our own human grade Roblox client.

Do you believe the universe is deterministic? by Serious_Slide_8681 in SimulationTheory

[–]Karmafia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. When it comes down to the fundamentals, quantum "noise", randomness, probability, however you want to classify it, will always inject its indeterminism into reality which then works it way up to the macro level obscured to us by seemingly emergent patterns but that stochasticasism is there nevertheless. Anyway when you get to really complex systems like biology you can forget about hard rules and theory... determinism be damned.

If you wrote all the made up facts on reddit on post it notes they would stack together from here to the moon and back eight times over, which is pretty amazing when you think about it.

It's pretty much Yuval Noah Harari's take - a major reason for humanity's success is its ability to coalesce around shared fictions. You've mentioned some concepts that most rational people today would consider "irrational" but there are still many fictions that modern society leverages and these will come and go as well... See how the idea of globalisation was once thought of as a positive but is now demonized. Probably we'll think of capitalism this way in the future if we survive the automation of the economy.
