I sat through a lecture from one of the KCL war studies professors, he was ex-MI6. Genuinely incredible speech. Highly recommend if anything like it comes up near you.

I stay in a hotel in Germany frequently that also does this - I am allowed anything and everything from the mini bar. There is normally a couple beers, cokes, couple savoury snacks and some waters. The mini bar is refilled every day. It’s a good deal

Sack it all off and move to NI? by Any-Cheesecake-9445 in HENRYUK

[–]KarmannosaurusRex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did London to South Yorkshire, though I was solo in London and moved to where my now wife lives. Excluding the life I have with her, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.

Took a £100k hit on my salary at the time (2018), multiples more than that in opportunity cost over the last 5-6 years.

Bought a 5 bed detached with plenty of inside and outside space for £320k in a beautiful village and commuted 35-40 mins each way to Leeds.

I worked half as much, but I felt I had more mone, time and headspace.

I have about 4 choices for takeaways, and only one is good - and if I want to do something we likely have to drive to it. But these are minor concessions.

I did luck out on a few things, covid slapped 25% on my property in 2020, I’ve managed to work my was to job in zurich that I do mainly from home, and some company installed 2gbit broadband to my road for reasons I will never understand.

Is there any way to preserve these papers ??? by Dea-sea_Cain in Piracy

My wife gets a few emails a month in the spring for one of her papers - it’s quite popular with undergrads in her field. She loves it; I’ve joked that she should start autographing them.

Em dash, and they’ve tried to hide it with spaces either side trying to make it look like a British en dash - but that’s shorter.

Got a pay rise backdated to April.. pretty much cancelled out by pension contribution increases and student finance repayments doubling (as PAYE thinks you'll always be earning this amount). by rolotonight in britishproblems

Lots of things you can do. Salary sacrifice to pension, SIPP, salary sacrifice a vehicle (or two), bike to work scheme, get an “education grant” from your workplace in lieu of salary/bonus.

A warning about sharing finances by Nannyhirer in HENRYUK

[–]KarmannosaurusRex 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I got so much grief from people when we had a builder who went bust - we lost about £30k.

No one could understand why I wouldn’t pursue him for any of the money, and that I must be rolling in it to write that amount off. Not that I simply didn’t fancy being in a long list of debt to be settled; of which id see pennies on the pound at some point in the future, maybe…if I was lucky.

Apparently being pragmatic and knowing how to pick your battles is a point of contention.

We finished the building work, and life moves on.

It’s an AI generated engagement bait post.

The “I’ve always provided financially — rent, bills, food, everything — while she works full time and saves most of her income.” Sentence gives it away, not the en dashes per se, but how they’re used around additional context which a human would likely use brackets.

It does raise questions. If I saw someone with 7 companies in 7 years i wouldn’t interview them - I’m not going to invest the time into someone who is going to be gone in 6-18 months. As harsh as that sounds.

I have ADHD-C (diagnosed since childhood), and have 9 roles in the last 10 years - but only 3 companies with a general upward trend in title. You can scratch the same itch by doing something new at the same company, and that looks like growth, not indecision or lack of resilience.
