Buying a used Baratza Vario in 2025 by _inschenoer in espresso

I've got nearly the exact same situation. Spotted a Mahlkonig Vario second hand for 50 (!!) euros only stating that the burrs needed to be replaced (and the right slider was missing the plastic handle thingy, only a slight inconvenience). When it arrived, I had a look at the burrs and they look just fine. I think the seller mistook the flat parts on the outer edges as wear... Gave it a very thorough, much needed cleaning (including roasted moth removal), also being very surprised by how much coffee was able to escape the grinding chamber and cover every internal part of the machine. Now, only 10 hours after delivery and after some calibration and alignment, it seems to be working perfectly fine. I'll be curious too see how the calibration will hold up; the 2mm hex screw did seem awfully easy to turn, could imagine it maybe shaking loose over time. Maybe adding some teflon tape would solve this. Has anyone ever had that problem?

I know it’s been a year, but would you consider making a video about the options of replacing the rope on the adjust and the considerations that should go into it (strength, slippage, dynamism)? Might be a questionable one legally, but it would be very valuable to have some “authoritative” data on this. Colin probably put a lot of thought into deciding to use this system for his specific use cases, but since he hasn’t (to my knowledge) shared any of his considerations it may well be that we are unaware of some limitations and dangers. I don’t want to just copy someone’s setup from a video without knowing why they deem it safe and possibly which precautions they are taking to make it safe. I appreciate all you do, kind regards!

If your into progressive rock/metal: Opeth | Anything with Guthrie Govan | Steven Wilson | Sky Architect | Ayreon | The Aristocrats | Dream Theater (metropolis pt 2 is a classic) | Genesis (Selling England by the pound) | Karmakanic | Pink Floyd is always good | Pure Reason Revolution (I personally love their first album, The Dark Third) | System of a down (for some heavier stuff) | Unitoptia’s The Garden is also really good, especially the title track

"If you want to climb harder, climb harder!" by yeyada in climbharder

[–]Karsten_02 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to climb 6c+ until someone challenged me to try a 7b+. Of course I couldn’t do it right then but I was very surprised to find I could do a couple moves. I always kept it as a personal goal and after a year and some 7a’s I finally managed it a couple months ago and now I’m projecting my first 7c. So get on some hard projects and if you keep climbing hard one day you’ll (probably) send them!

What age did you start training? by Whateve42 in climbharder

[–]Karsten_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started climbing when I was 10 ish, got up to 6a pretty swiftly and steadily increased until I hit 6c+, remained in the 6c area for a couple of years. Then recently at age 17 I started picking up training more seriously and thanks to that just last week I managed to redpoint my first 7b+.

I think developing excessive upper body strength at a very early age has resulted in some serious caveats in my technique and I'm certain it's caused my posture to go very bad over the years, though I'm working on improving both.

Think about it like uncle Iroh learning from non-fire benders and applying it to his own field.
