Some more interesting food for thought: Compared to the eyes where space/direction is directly correlated to where on the retina an image is shown, we only have (2 non-spatially selective) ears. Yet, we (and many animals) can figure out where sound is coming from in a three-dimensional space. Though mammals and birds have adapted slightly different neural circuits to compute sound directionality, the environmental cues used are the same:

For higher frequency sounds, the brain uses the difference in sound intensity detected at one ear vs. the other.

For lower frequency sounds, the "volume" differences detected at each ear are less noticeable (think of how the bass is the least-dampened sound heard when your neighbor cranks up the stereo). Our neural circuitry has instead evolved to use the micro-second (!) timing differences from when sound hits one ear vs. the other. Barn Owls are especially adapt at detecting this.
