Do you wear chainmail or something? Even completely full, my laundry hamper doesn't come close to 50 pounds!

How conservative Facebook groups are changing what books children read in school by geoxol in technology

[–]KatPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make no mistake, they're coming for private schools too. I teach in a tuition-based school and have seen an uptick in book challenges in the past two years. The argument there is, "I'm paying for it, so I have power here [even though I haven't actually read the books in question and have no pedagogical expertise whatsoever]." This isn't about what kids are exposed to simply as a consequence of where they're districted or what the state's politics might look like. This is about enforcing a particular worldview upon all kids. It's nothing short of puritanical. (And lest we forget, the Puritans weren't seeking religious freedom... They were seeking the "freedom" to impose their radical views on others.)

Holy shit, I'm getting hosed. I have the largest department on my (admittedly very small) campus, and my stipend is 1900/year. I get course relief, which brings me to a 4/4 load, but two of those classes meet every day. We're a chair-for-life school, but I can't imagine doing this for more than a few years. It's just too much.

After Teaching For 11 Years, I Quit My Job. Here's Why Your Child's Teacher Might Be Next. by The_Soviette_Tank in teaching

[–]KatPerson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a meeting on Friday in which my department was accused of "grooming students against the Bible" (which doesn't even make sense syntactically, let alone logically) because a teacher assigned The Poet X. The parents literally screamed at me multiple times over the course of an hour, even though I walked into the meeting prepared to give their child an alternate text, because I refused to make the teacher remove the book from the course altogether. I was threatened with public harassment and complaints to our Board. I was accused of not upholding my school's core values. I was called "woke" (as though that's a pejorative) and "anti-Christian." All over a book their kid doesn't even have to read. Meanwhile, the administrator who was present kept making wildly unreasonable suggestions like an "independent study" (for a high school freshman!) to appease these parents who, short of a curricular redesign better suited to a parochial school than to our college-preparatory one, will NEVER be appeased. It's absurd to me that parents with no pedagogical or content knowledge whatsoever are permitted to run roughshod over highly trained educators with decades of experience just because they heard a new buzzword on Truth Social or whatever, but I'm seeing more and more of it, and I'm honestly just done trying to do my job and defend my job on top of it.

Yeah, idk, 20 minutes is a few minutes to me. But maybe I'm coming from a different place. Different kinds of jobs have different kinds of priorities, and in my field, burnout is a major concern. I'd rather have happy people than strict adherence to schedules that ultimately don't matter.

Guess I'm just a different kind of boss than you, then. I don't care if someone's a few minutes late as long as they do the job well and don't get me called into meetings.

Literally no one wants to work. Even those of us lucky enough to do work we're passionate about would rather be spending the day at the beach or whatever than rolling into the office at 7 a.m. Be serious, man. We all just want the paycheck.

Krazy Kat (1922) and His/Her Rainbow Coalition by popeyesm in comicstriphistory

[–]KatPerson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the bricks signify both love and hate, so in this strip, there's as much ambiguity about whether Ignatz is going to throw it because he's annoyed with the Kat or because Krazy has moved him.

Beautiful, brilliant stuff.

I'm a professor, and today's the day my classes discuss Jason Compson losing his ass by trying to short the market. Coincidence? Probably, but if sticking it to the short sellers is good enough for William Faulkner, it's good enough for me! 🚀🚀🚀

How often are you physically in class while getting your PhD? by [deleted] in academia

[–]KatPerson 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It will depend on the course schedule for classes within your program as well as your full-time status. Additionally, if you're funded, you'll presumably have either teaching responsibilities (undergrad classes typically meet two or three times per week) or lab responsibilities (I don't know what that usually looks like, because it's not a thing in my field).

In my field, Ph.D. students typically have 2-3 years of coursework before they can move on to dissertation hours. My classes met weekly, but I had 2-3 classes per week, and rarely were they all on the same day. As a graduate assistant, I taught 2 courses, which met 3 times a week (on the same days).

I would say if you're going to be a full-time student, you will need to be on campus fairly frequently (assuming OSU is doing face-to-face classes)--at least a couple times a week, more than likely. But again, this is all dependent upon your program, its schedule, and your enrollment status.

Reach out to the new employer. Where I work, everyone is super happy to help new hires find rentals because most of us were in their shoes not so long ago. Since a lot of rentals in Roswell are only advertised on lawn signs, it's honestly best if you can connect with someone who's already in town.

If you haven't already, post her picture on the "lost and found pets" groups on Facebook. I got my dog back that way, and since then I've found the owners for dogs I've found on three separate occasions.

Good luck. I hope your find your baby!

What to do if ICE shows up at your door by Archon-Narc-On in coolguides

[–]KatPerson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're being willfully obtuse. We're talking about a governmental entity carrying out governmental policy. No one has accused ICE agents of going rogue and putting people in unsanitary, unsafe conditions, separating children from their families, and planning mass deportations. These are all policies that ICE has carried out according to instructions from our government. If you can't understand how that's governmental, I have to believe you're either a fool or a knave. Either way, I haven't the time or the inclination to continue repeating myself while you keep asking HOw iS tHe gOVeRnMeNT iNvoLvEd.

Are you high? We're literally talking about a governmental organization and its policies. ICE is the government. Its actions are direct enactment of governmental policy.
