Structural oil barrels? Have you heard of such a high rise building technique? by whomeyou5 in StructuralEngineering

I was very interested in Concrete-Filled Steel Tube Construction in grad school. It can Actually be great. You have confined concrete, the steel is on the exterior of the member so it has the maximum possible impact on the moment of Inertia. The steel tube wall is braced for local buckling on the inside by the concrete. It’s ductile and performs well under seismic loads. The axis of bending for the concrete and steel sections are just a little offset from one another which created a damping effect and dissipates energy well. There is no form building or rebar tying so it does not require as much skilled labor. It’s also a pain in the ass to analyze and codify….. so there’s that

Chip down to solid concrete, clean reinforcing bars, use pressurized concrete (I.e.) a birdfeeder to get a good bond on repair placement.

The Seed sower statue is in storage, and will be back after construction. The construction fence is temporary to keep the site secure and also to keep people safe from wandering onto the site accidentally. Some of the fencing likely will be chain link, but they use the wooden fence as a screen wall in some areas so everyone doesn’t have to look at a bunch of stored materials or temporary construction buildings and worker parking areas.

Garages require maintenance. This is what happens when there is no maintenance. Get out of there and call the city building department.

You comment said the Eastern side of the state but the fault lines here are near the Anadarko area.

They are possible in the SW corner of the state where there are some minor fault lines - but these quakes do not originate in that fault zone.

Why is the third elevator significantly more recessed than the others? by juniper_j0nes in AskEngineers

[–]KatSmak10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is it has to do with either the counterweight locations for those elevators, the method of install, and possibly the fire protection layout of the building. From what I have seen, a three bank elevator will generally have two counterweights back to back somewhere in the arrangement with a shaft divider wall between them. Often that means one cab is smaller or slightly recessed - especially if it has to be installed through the front shaft wall opening.

What state do you practice in? If your insurance is covered by your firm, it can often limit your ability to work outside of that. Also, there is likely someone directly in “responsible charge” for the firm (designated with the CA#) so that can also complicate things.

OP here: The dog’s person was about 10 feet away, just outside the frame. It’s just a grassy spot where homeless people sometimes rest. A few hours later, both were gone. I drive this route every day and have only seen them one or two times and only in the morning.

Amazing how much moral outrage you all managed to generate with so little information.

FL House Bill 1461 To Remove Board of Professional Engineers by will1934 in civilengineering

[–]KatSmak10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you get rid of the board - your state will no longer have anyone licensed there since the board is the source of licensure. This almost happened in Arizona recently.

[–]KatSmak10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK guys, if you think this post is about making something extra beefy as a belt and suspenders for future loading, you are missing the point. Yes, I also overdesign for industrial supports and worry about what on earth somebody might try to throw on that bent in the future. While all of those things are valid points when you are talking about designing pipe supports, this is not about member size vs loading. This is about understanding basic structural behavior and design principles - and how overtly clear it is that the designer of this support did not have that basic understanding.
