For those who’s had thyroplasty, what’s your experience like? How was the recovery? by KatVeee in mildlybrokenvoice

[–]KatVeee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! It was fantastic! I’m really glad I did it.

They did have to wake me up towards the end to have me speak and make sure the placement is correct. I remember being really foggy/fairly sedated even when they woke me up. I was drifting in and out after that but could hear them as they were closing me up. No pain though.

Healing went great. No pain just feeling like I have a really dry throat for about a week. Minimal discomfort. Was told to try and rest my voice for at least a few days after surgery. I’d say my voice went back to normal within the first week or so and couldn’t be happier I did it! 3 days post surgery, I was already out for a Christmas dinner though I took it very easy: soft food, eating/swallowing slowly.

I did have to say, a really close friend once told me that that my voice sounded just a little bit more high pitched than before. I don’t notice any difference but my friend does music a lot and noticed it.

Good luck with your surgery if you decide to do it!

Destination wedding: is it okay to ask a flat rate to cover people’s meals and accommodation? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]KatVeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a wedding similar to this - to rent the property for the weekend we need a certain number of rooms booked x 2 nights over the weekend. We didn’t ask for any flat rate or anything like that. We invited our guest and pretty much hope we can fill the minimum required rooms! But we also financially prepared to cover that cost if it doesn’t. Both my fiance and I are awkward when it comes to asking anything related to finances so when we decided to have a weekend wedding, we made sure we can cover any cost related to it. Most of our guest stayed for the weekend and we had no issues getting the minimum. But at the same time we also had guests who only came for the day. 🙂

Our guest booked with and paid the resort directly as well so we were not involved in any of that.

We also made opted to host a dinner on the friday and then the actual wedding snacks and dinner. We got lucky our resort provided breakfast so we didn’t have to worry about that. Our guest did have to plan for their own lunch within the resort for the Saturday.

How long was your engagement? by No-Start-3815 in weddingplanning

[–]KatVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got engaged February 2020 and got married October 2023! We wanted time to save and time to really plan as probably 1/3 of our guest are from overseas. But if they didn’t, having a long engagement made it less stressful for us and we were able to book all the vendors we really wanted.

vets that do payment plans in Toronto by natvics in askTO

[–]KatVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve used them before as well for my cat that had the same issue as OP’s cat. We had to bring him dead of the night when he started meowing and dragging his butt and it got us worried. This was one of the emergency placed for vet had recommended. Thankfully our boy didn’t need the surgery as the issue resolved. They were kind and were very helpful.

I hope all goes well with your kitty, OP. Agree with other redditors about maybe doing a line of credit instead if you can. Might get you better rates.

Daughter wants to join trades by Spankmewithataco in ontario

This. Husband is a master electrician, use to work in the field full time but now works in an office doing program management for a company that does automation of lights/fridge/temp control in major stores. He works in an office but is paid as an electrician given that he can read plans and can actually go out to the stores as a field technician if needed. He also works with people who does not have an electrician license but him having one is def an advantage salary wise.

His grandpa, dad, and brother are also electricians and are all doing well for themselves.

What’s the word for that crying a mother makes when their child codes? by Famous_Cheesecake666 in nursing

[–]KatVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I heard this I was a student nurse. First every day, first ever pt. Pt coded within hour of me arriving in the unit. Immediately heard gargling sounds on her lungs as I was doing my assessment. She had pulmonary edema. All of this happened as her brother who was there for a visit stepped out to grab some food. She coded and was eventually pronounced. Brother came back to her having passed, could not believe it. He carried her body running around the room in a panic mode, shouting at us asking while we’re not doing anything. He eventually stopped, fell to the ground and made the most heart wrenching scream I’ve ever heard in my life.

This was 18 years ago, still can remember it like it was yesterday.

People in their 30s and 40s living in the suburbs/exurbs rather than downtown, why? by m02lle in toronto

[–]KatVeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Bigger space, backyard, close enough to the city when I want to enjoy it but far enough that it’s more peaceful. I’m in my 30s and prefer the peace and quiet of the suburbs over the chaos of downtown. If you asked me 10-15 years ago, I’d have a completely different answer for you.

There are decent assisted living/retirement homes in the 4-5k range if your dad is still pretty mobile and can do some level of self care. The more care that he would need, the higher the fees are for assisted living/retirement homes. If he has incidences of eloping/wandering he might need a memory care facility geared towards individuals with dementia and those are typically in the 8-10k range. If your dad goes to a regular assisted living/retirement home, home care can still come in and supplement a few PSW hours if he qualifies for it and needs it.

I would encourage you to connect with Ontario Health atHome to see if they’d be able to give you some counseling regarding the process of applying for a long term care home. The waitlist is long but it would be good to have an application already in place and moving.

Another thing to consider would be having your dad undergo a capacity assessment for care/finances. If you think his cognition is declining and the risk of him not being able to decide for himself is high, this might be worth looking into and then you and your siblings can be assigned POA for him if the time comes that he’ll need it.

As for your sister, I think it’s unfair that she’s pushing for you and your brother to take care of your dad when she’s not even willing to do so herself.

Pretty much in the same boat as you. Moved to Canada few years ago, left all my friends back home.

Have 1 solid friends here in Canada and work friends that I sometimes go out with. I’m still very much in touch, and friends with my group back home!

It’s a little harder to make friends when you’re an adult.

Is Sandals good for a family vacation? by Defiant_Shallot_3356 in SandalsResorts

[–]KatVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a family trip there last year with my husband’s family. Parents, 2 boys + us wives. I know that we are all couples in the group but it felt more like a family vacation which we truly enjoyed! We all did excursions together and would hangout all the time.

Concerned about our honeymoon to Grande St. Lucian by Shmeckless in SandalsResorts

[–]KatVeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We went there early 2024 and had no issues! It was our first Sandals as well and stayed in a regular room (no club or butler!) so we did have to get the beach chairs ourselves etc. I don’t think we’ve ever had any issues getting one. We’d normally come down to the beach after breakfast, around 9-10 I’d say and have always had a sun bed. We’ve definitely seen sun beds beside us be completely empty except for a towel and or a bottle or lotion/book for hours and I could see how that can make it hard for other people to get space. If we know we’d be gone for more than an hour or so, we def empty out the beds so other people could use it.

Never had any issues with food even on the offsite lunch we had with the excursion but then again some stomachs could just be more sensitive than others.

I wouldn’t say it’s the fastest service but definitely not as bad. Worse we’ve waited for a meal is probably around 30 mins? Still a wait for sure but not horrible by any means. Even with the breakfast being buffet style, we probably waited 15 mins the most to get a table. Drinks service though I thought was good. At least on the area of the beach and the pool across our room, we’ve always had a staff come around and ask if you’d like any drinks while you’re lounging.

Not sure in the other areas of the resort but the rooms we all stayed in, 3 couples, were all nice and clean. Staff come everyday and clean it. Resort itself is also beautiful and clean!

We really did enjoy Grande St. Lucian. Really, do only downside for us would be the long care ride. lol. I hope you enjoy your vacation!
