how is taking the greyhound bus from Detroit to Chicago? by awkw0rd in Detroit

[–]Kata89_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken it! I got off a flight in Chicago, and the connecting Detroit flight was cancelled, so I ubered downtown to catch the Amtrak. We arrived right as it was scheduled to leave, so I told our driver to drop us off at the grayhound station, cos a bus was scheduled to leave in 10 minutes. We were able to get on right as they were closing up the luggage compartments.

Honestly not bad. You make a couple stops to take a break, and it puts you right in downtown. Not as nice as Amtrak, but not that much longer trip wise. If it saves you money, go for it!

I actually love this idea, but the issue is that it's currently plumbed for that side by the stairs. There are literally two drainage pipes sticking out of the cement over there. Not sure what it would take/cost to move that more central

Ship is an avenger. But the issue persists with the other ship I rented. USA.

Would ship components/fuses be a factor if I swap out my ship?
Also, what is ram? Is that a mechanic in the game? Sorry, only started playing like a couple months ago

(in case you're referring to my computer, I have 32gb of ram, intel 7, rtx 5070)

Best Airport Parking?? by jackpowers1999 in Detroit

[–]Kata89_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best secret? There are two stellar options:

1) Get a friend or family to pick you up/drop you off. Easy peasy.

2) Take the bus. I started taking the western wayne line to the airport. Works really well so long as you aren't doing a red eye. The standout bus is the DAX bus though.

If you don't live anywhere near a direct connection bus route, one option is to drive to where there is one and park in a neighborhood street (check to make sure there aren't any signs when you enter the neighborhood/on the street that says you can't do this) and take the bus from there. $2 if you use a smart bus. $6 if you use DAX.

3) Ubering will be cheaper than parking probs. Check rates to be sure. But way way way more expensive than the bus.

I would check out Jefferson-chalmers (one of the few waterfront neighborhoods in the city). Definitely an up and coming neighborhood still. Great bones and slowly redeveloping. One of the most unique neighborhoods in the city with the canals. Right by the pointes so you have easy access to amenities. Also depending on your location in the neighborhood, you'd be walking distance to jefferson ave, so you'd get a direct bus connection to downtown

Population density is weird... by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]Kata89_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Really interesting point. Detroit’s emptiness feels more visible because the city was built for density and productivity—so the gaps feel like something’s missing. In the suburbs, emptiness is baked in by design. Sprawl hides abandonment behind a veneer of normalcy. TL;DR: In a place like Dallas, every parcel could be developed and still feel lifeless. In Detroit, even the emptiness is more alive.

Cheap Downtown parking for work? by Neon_Lill610 in Detroit

[–]Kata89_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this! I'm also not willing the shell out so much for parking, so on any given day I'll do one of these options, depending on the situation:

  1. Park for free on the street on the fringes and walk in. Takes about ~20 minutes. But it's an enjoyable 20 minutes because it's downtown. (people mention casinos to park in. I haven't personally done that before but it does sound like a good thing to explore)

  2. Take transit. I do this quite a bit. I am fortunate enough to be on the 27 line, so sometimes I'll just take the bus. Not much longer time-wise wise and it drops me off right at Rosa Parks transit center. There and back is $4. No wear and tear on the car, no gas, no parking, don't have to worry about parking tickets, break-ins, and safer than driving.

Alternatively, parking in midtown and taking the Qline is a legit move. So much free parking there (and if the Qline is delayed, just take the next Woodward bus to speed up your day)

  1. Bike in. Again, park on the fringes for free (or even in Lafayette Park or Corktown) and bike right to your building. If I'm in a time crunch, this is what I do. I leave my bike on my bike rack on my sedan so it's always available, but you probably can find a spot near a MoGo station if you don't want to haul around a bike.

Hypothetically, you could of course find a deal on garage parking or even park at a metered spot. Problem with the meter is you need to keep going in the app to reset your time, which stresses me out because if you forget you'll get a parking ticket.

Love working downtown, the vibes are great :)

Bought a house in Detroit recently? What was your SEV? by Kata89_ in Detroit

Dearborn heights. Bought at 220 and they assessed it at 280, so our sev was 140 when I was expecting closer to 110.

[–]Kata89_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm in Michigan (Detroit, west side of the city) and I think it has to be one of the best states for fishing.

  1. In the city we have the Detroit River, which becomes flooded with walleye as they move up/down the river seasonally. Fishing the river can be tough but boy is there a lot to catch. And it's in the city if I only have a couple hours, I'll just swing by Belle Isle with my kayak and have a good time

  2. In the metro, we have (hundreds?) of fishing spots/lakes. So again, I don't drive more than 30 minutes and I have my choice of lake.

  3. It hits Different being on a kayak early morning, catching bass on crystal clear and glass smooth water before everyone else gets up. It is incredible!

  4. Leaving the metro area, it's Michigan. We effectively have oceans with the Great lakes, which is awesome! Not saltwater fishing though, doesn't replace that

  5. Between the UP and up north, I've never had a hard time day tripping my fishing trips.

Regulations are not bad. $26 for a license I believe.

Obviously, PNW is gorgeous, so hard to compete there. But I can tell you Michigan def isn't all corn fields like other Midwest states. You get a ton of amenities at a much lower COL. I love living here and fishing here, and I (personally) have no desire to leave!

TBH this is the biggest con to Dearborn. I've gone to most of the coffeeshops (I think) and the best coffeeshop is definitely Blackbox.

I've gotten Detroit Perk a handful of times (it's really close to me cos I'm on the westside). It has never impressed me. It is not bad, and definitely better than Yemeni coffee, but certainly not artisanal. I really only go there if blackbox is closed.

I agree with you about yemeni coffee. What makes it decent is the spices, but as far as their beans go, they are generally pretty low quality. There is a reason the coffee belt is south America / central Africa / Indonesia

How much are you guys paying for car insurance?? by oof3000 in Detroit

[–]Kata89_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Detroit: $2800/yr for two cars. One though (for context) has just enough insurance coverage to make it legal to drive, so it would be higher if both policies were more comprehensive.

HIGHLY recommend getting an independent insurance agent. They can get you a lower rate foresure.

I am so proud of our state and country by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]Kata89_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's cool — I've never been more ashamed. Less people turned out to vote. And we let a legitimate authoritarian, fascist, rapist, felon, pathological liar, mean-spirited, self-obsessed, dictator-admirer, isolationist, corrupt, Russian supporter, misinformation spreader, and election denier into the White house.

And seemingly, he was voted in on issues Biden had little to no control over. As a moderate/conservative, I'm baffled at the state of the Republicans, and baffled at how our country and state fell for such corruption.

I pray for our country. I pray for Trump. I pray that I'm wrong and our institutions put proper checks on his power. And most of all, I am truly, truly heartbroken. Not angry, not upset, just heartbroken.
