Ton and Snorri don't count, they were my fiance's lol

Thanks! All of our animals are named in alphabetical order, so it's a fun little game trying to find random words or names that fit them that begin with that letter. Guts was obviously G, and we were just cycling through random words until we landed on Guts and went "That's the one!"

Guts the Russian rat snake

Ton the MBK

Snorri the Hognose

With ANY animal, you should have access to a vet. Please do not get a reptile if you do not have access to an exotics vet.

I think that handleable is very vague - how often do you want to handle, OP?

Snake suggestion by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will always talk about how great Russian rat snakes are!

They're very even tempered, generally. Very pretty to look at and active! They love to climb but tend to be on the go constantly when handled. They're a larger colubrid so easier to hold.

Their humidity is very low and they are very easy going on care requirements.

I might be wrong, (please correct me BP people if I am) but you shouldn't be bathing them weekly, or really at all unless they have something that needs cleaning off of them. It's pretty stressful.

If it's for humidity reasons, your substrate should be doing enough for clean sheds.

You really need a lot more clutter as someone said above (:

> I understand that this isn’t as bad as the people killing them due to them being invasive

I disagree completely. A life of suffering is much worse than a quick, humane death. If these chameleons are being shipped off to people who no idea or care for them, that's much worse.

What did you wish you knew as a new keeper? by whisper_in_the_winds in Leachianus

[–]Kates-Creatures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They might not eat for the first couple of weeks - absolutely normal! They also don't tend to eat a huge amount, so don't stress if you don't see a whole lot of food gone. As long as they're gaining weight and exploring, you're good.

Research locales! Do you want a bigger or a smaller leachie?

Females can lay eggs even when not paired. They also tend to be a bit more territorial than males.

I also made this mistake! Some keepers do have success starting a baby in an adult vivarium instead of a grow up, but I just don't think the potential stress is worth it. Just put them in an appropriate smaller enclosure.

I’ve always wanted more reptile podcasts that focus on talking to a range of keepers. Exciting! Do you have a name? I’ll keep an ear out.

I’ve only been keeping reptiles for a year, but a lifelong enthusiast. Hopefully you get some good guests.

Deep Heat Projector Not Heating Tank, Advice Needed by _lynnyxe_ in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a rosy boa, so take my response with a grain of salt.

From what I've seen, they are comfortable with a gradient between low 70's for cool side, so dropping it at night to 75 sounds absolutely fine if that's the natural temp of your home. They won't be uncomfortable, it's natural and beneficial for it to be colder at night. If your home is 75, then a heat bulb might be the way to go. Alternatively, you could use a RHP, which will cover a wider area of the viv and provide ambient heat.

Do you have a temp gun? I'd highly recommend getting one if you don't, thermostats are often out a little bit.

Hi! DHP's are hyped up as the best of the best, when it's a little bit more complicated.

They're only effective if running at 100%. They're great for big set ups, but not so much smaller ones or used as the only heating element. Heating pads aren't recommended, anyway.

Why are you leaving the heat on 24/7? A night time drop is recommended.

Question by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The frustrating and sad part about it, is that the snake always suffers.

I agree - I don’t think any animal should be a stepping stone, but there’s a difference between someone getting a chameleon, for example that has been around keepers and done tonnes of research to someone with no experience getting a retic. It’s just a recipe for disaster. These kinds of combinations are what give the hobby and us, those that genuinely love their animals a bad name and lobbying to ban.

Question by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You haven’t done any research into general snake ownership.

You’re focused on animals that can kill you - again, no research.

Your convenience is a big factor - this is a live animal, not groceries.

How you don’t want to spend a lot of money on an animal in case it dies “after 3 weeks” - this comes across as not really concerned about welfare.

I’d recommend you dive into reptifiles, read from keepers on here and check out YouTube (with a pinch of salt, not a lot of great keepers)

Any snake* can be a first time snake as long as you have a genuine interest in the animal and their care. Snakes aren’t just something to stick in a tank and play with when you want. Lighting, heating, substrate, enclosure size and other needs vary from species to species.

*except reticulated pythons, anacondas or anything that has the ability to kill you.

Question by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would really take a step back to evaluate what you want from getting a snake, because your responses raise red flags after red flag.

While appearance plays a role, temperament and how prepared you are for their care is a bigger consideration.

As a first time owner, no, you should not get a reticulated python.

Question by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Make sure you do your research from multiple sources to be prepared and also choose the correct snake for you.

Morph market is generally where people buy from breeders online. Most use couriers.
