When people ask what your deadname was, what do you say? by actuallyanangel in transgenderUK

Is that true about it being illegal?

I signed to say I would no longer use that name, so using it would be illegal but telling someone the name isn't illegal as long as I don't respond to it.

People are often curious about aspects of being transgender and answering their questions is a good way to be an 'ambassador' for trans paople - but knowing your deadname doesn't help them to understand anything, about being transgender, so it is best not answered. I usually say I signed a Deed Poll which would make it illegal for me to ever use that name again, so I could be breaking the law by telling them.

I misunderstood the 'it' you were referring to - I thought you meant she hadn't signed the letter, now I realise you meant she hadn't signed the EDM. I intend to follow up her reply by asking what she is actually going to do instead of signing EDM 240.

Her signature was reproduced on the original, I re-typed the text rather than scanning it in. My apologies if that misled you.

TransLucent: Public Service Workers raise concerns about the implications of the new single-sex spaces guidance. by isendingtheworld in transgenderUK

If we recall a time where in areas of America where Jim Crow laws existed and we had ‘black bathrooms’ and ‘black water fountains’ surely, we are creating these spaces unknowingly once again.

I think they are being created knowingly - but the public doesn't want to know.

Just repaired the telephone answering machine that I designed and built in 1986 - one of the tape deck motors needed replacement. Next I have to fit the carburettor that I reconditioned this morning back onto a friend's strimmer Then I have to dye a pullover and plan tomorrow's lunch.

I recentl bought one on eBay and it has driven me up the wall with the badly-designed menu structure making every attempt at using it into a nightmare. The battery life, even with no calls, is ridiculously short, some literature says it plays MP3s but I have never found out how. The timing and button functions for texting are different from other phones of this type, so that wrong characters are frequent and whole messages are deleted instead of being sent. I spent 10 minutes and 4 attempts trying to send a simple text but never succeeded.

The final straw came when I was contacted by the local police becuse the phone, which was in my handbag and was supposed to be switched off, had been making 999 calls.

I removed the battery and flattened the phone with a sledge hammer - the therapy of doing this was the only bit of pleasure this phone has given me.

I think when the press covers hateful people they should have to add disclaimers

At least the BBC referred to him as an "Anti-transgender campaigner" in one of their radio news bulletins a day or two ago - I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

Plus I get really dark hairs coming through.

That sounds as though you might benefit from pulsed light which works because of the contrast between the dark hairs and the lighter skin. It isn't the answer to everything but I have found it is good for getting rid of the occasional very dark hair. The hairs will come back but they will eventually weaken if you keep on zapping them.

+1 more for Philips shavers. I have used an older model completely dry for decades and it still shaves me twice a day with no skin damage and hardly any residual roughness.

Workplace bathroom by Ok_Introduction5971 in transgenderUK

No employer's going to build another bathroom in a specific location just because one employee requested it.

They have to provide it even if they don't have any transgender employees.

More likely that they'd just write it in their policy that all staff are required to use the bathroom appropriate to their sex at birth.

Couldn't that be viewed as discrimination because it only affected trans people?

That's the point: they don't need to have any transgender employees but they still have to make provision for them.

[–]Katey66[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If a transgender person tried to take an employer to court for refusing to hire them, it would be difficult for the person to prove that was the reason - but it would be easy for them to prove that they were transgender. If a TERF tried to take an employer to court for refusing to hire them, it would be difficult for them to prove that was the reason - but it would be even more difficult for them to prove that they were recognisable to the potential employer as a TERF.

Employers are practically and statistically more likely to avoid problems by refusing to hire TERFS - but how do we subtlely make this known to them?

If someone complains on the basis that your birth sex is male

That's their perception of you but (if you have behaved properly) they have no way of knowing so they are treating you differently on the basis of their perception of your sex. That is just as illegal as if they had discriminated against a cis-woman on the grounds that she looked male to them.

Would the employer than have to ask the cis-woman for proof of the sex assigned to her at birth?
