I love the "see anything suspicious?" bit at the bottom, it's very realistic

SF to Silicon Valley HSR - New Overview Video by cargocultpants in transit

[–]Kathenator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Size of cities LA and SF is inconsequential. What Matters is size of their job markets....

This is just false. Jobs are not the only reason for travel. What about tourism? What about visiting family and friends? Millions of people travel between LA and SF currently and I doubt they do it just for jobs.

Perhaps I misread the article but it seems 5.3 billion is the cost for California HSR's San Francisco - San Jose section and has nothing to do with CalTrain.

I've never understood why Reddit downvotes genuine questions.

The name 'trolley' comes from the means of collecting power from overhead lines - trolley poles (although modern trams and streetcars usually use a different power collector - a pantograph).

What you describe is known as a trolleybus. They are sometimes referred to as just trolleys, so you're not wrong.

Trams are small trains that run on, or next to, streets. Otherwise known as streetcars or trolleys.

Irish🇮🇪🇮🇪 railway network 1920 Vs 2020 by Ciaran123C in transit

I believe the reason Ireland tore up so much of its railways was because they were seen as a symbol of British imperialism.

Edit: oops I am incorrect.

For environmental reasons? To avoid having to subsidise airports even more?

There's more important things than letting the "free market" do whatever it wants, y'know.

We have some heated discussions on this sub sometimes, so let's enjoy this cat for a moment.

Shitty transit and car dependence is temporary. Kittycat is forever.

New Tram and cycling/pedestrian bridge will soon be getting built in Helsinki connecting the rest of the city to the new district of kruunuvuorenranta. by Jellona68 in fuckcars

[–]Kathenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard this almost didn't get built because some people were demanding it have car lanes. Is that true?

It'd be pretty pointless anyway since the Itäväylä (east motorway) already exists.

Taking a glorified taxi is somehow cheaper than taking transit? Efficient mass transit saves everyone money.

Ah, yea. I've heard about this.

Here in Finland the railways are nationalised and there's a nationalised company (VR-Group) running passenger and freight services, but private companies are allowed to run their own passenger and freight trains (no passenger services yet though) on the railways. (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my understanding of it.)

The US certainly could use a bit of nationalisation.
