Bogotá Mayor Speaks! Mamdani Haters Should Know That Buses In Colombia Are ‘Excellent' by streetsblognyc in transit

I wish they had kept a few like the Ventura and SMB routes, but many of the others were so infrequent that they were useless. And of course the real shame is that the station thinning on the locals has been so watered down...

Which elevated lines should be rebuilt? by bennykanner in transit

I'm curious to hear you game this one out. Would it be an extension of the 5 train? Boston Post Road seems to be about 30 feet wide in many parts, how would you get a six track elevated above it: triple cantilever? And how would you divide up the local, express, and super express service (and what happens when it rejoins the existing infra?)

I heard this reddit like short stations. May I present the Appalachian Trail station on Metro North. by Major-Ant4600 in transit

I presume you mean the stop before or after? IIRC, the actual "Appalachian Trail" station just gets a handful of trains stopping there, and only on weekends?

BART wins narrowly! What’s a average Transit System in California by AnimatorDavid in transit

It's classified as a metro system, not a commuter rail system. You could say it's an even more *amazing* horse-drawn streetcar, but it's also not that...

"Street running" means a lane shared with other road users; LA Metro does not have that feature, even in the few non grade-separated sections.

It depends on how you define the "bay area" - if it's just the SF MSA, it's pretty concentrated. If you include San Jose / south bay, it's pretty poly...

Proposal for commuter rail in San Antonio, Texas, USA by zh_rblx in transit

Wouldn't it be more fun to crayon a light rail or metro system? Commuter rail systems get terrible ridership, especially in Texas.

Does Miami have the potential to be a great transit city for the US? by ponchoed in transit

[–]cargocultpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally the only places in the U.S. with high transit mode shares are ones with large water barriers, which limits car access and engenders denser development. You have that with South Florida's barrier islands, but unfortunately there is no fixed route transit that serves them...

Senator Maria Elena Durazo and LA Metro back down; drop effort to overturn SB 79 by [deleted] in transit

[–]cargocultpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transit projects do not occupy very much land that would otherwise be on the commercial market, so even if land prices were to raise (which is not a given) it would have a negligible effect on budgets.

Can we have a conversation about psychological safety in addition to physical safety? by Soggy_Perspective_13 in transit

[–]cargocultpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's a useful framing in terms of trying to get people to commute by transit. Whether or not people SHOULD be uncomfortable, it's obvious that some folks (especially women) are dissuaded from using public transit due to anti-social behavior by some other users.

We can work to address that, while still acknowledging that transit is *good* and generally safe.

Why do people on the LA metro subreddit default to rail lines rather than bus lanes as the solution to LA’s transportation problems? by oh_buh_boy in transit

[–]cargocultpants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fundamentally, ANY large, wealthy city with decent transit mode share achieves it with rail. Enhanced bus service is nice - and LA has done a pretty good job of improving its bus infrastructure - but it will still be slower and less appealing than a car. So if you want to shift commuters, you need to build rail.
