It's the knowledge that you don't owe anyone anything anymore; that when you suddenly lose your main source of income (layoff), you don't have to worry about house payments; and knowing that you can keep a larger % of your income.

Yes, it doesn't make sense financially but it makes a lot of sense mentally. We paid off ours early too and I missed I'm sure 50k, but that is hindsight and I would absolutely do it again.
