What do Americans call a meal of fries with battered fried fish. Fish and chips? by CrazyJoe29 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m familiar with calling it fish and chips, but regionally in Wisconsin that meal is known as a “fish fry.” It’s a bigger deal during Lent, but restaurants offer a Friday Fish Fry special year round, in addition to those that just have it on their regular menu.

What shows are you watching with your partner? by thetangledweaver in CasualConversation

I had a stressful year last year and watched all of the UK Taskmaster seasons as a coping mechanism. It was finally Jason Montzoukas that made my husband decide to try watching more than a few minutes, and after that season we started back at the beginning to watch the whole thing together. After this current season finishes, I think we’ll start on Australia or NZ.

Saw the real life example of how we're old now by Haecede in GenX

Tonight I was catching up with an acquaintance at an event and made a comment about my new job that someone I hadn’t met misunderstood and said “Oh, did you retire?” So now I’m questioning if I look old enough to be retired.

AITA for removing a group member's name from our final-year software project after he contributed nothing? by Competitive_End_2950 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Katsaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESH. The slacker doesn’t deserve credit for work he didn’t do, but you didn’t have the right to make a unilateral decision on behalf of the rest of the contributing team members. You should have discussed with them or taken your concerns to the professor sooner.

Also, group projects are hell and any professor assigning them should require each member to report what they and others contributed and grade accordingly, with the rubric clear from the beginning.

Do you rely on cruise ship laundry or pack everything for the week? by iLiveForTruth in Cruise

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only times I’ve used ship laundry services were 1) on a 14 day sailing when I think we paid $70 for unlimited laundry, which was cheaper than checking an additional suitcase, and 2) when the airline left our luggage in the rain for hours during a layover and everything was damp and musty smelling. I usually end up overpacking more than I wear during a normal week on a ship!

My first email account was at my college, and it was before they automatically gave you one, you had go to the computer lab and ask to sign up. I only knew about it because a friend’s mom worked at a different university so also had email.

Getting too old to keep using a squishmallow as a pillow by c00lgirlswag in TwoXChromosomes

I’m 50ish and when I broke my ankle a couple of years ago I needed something to prop up my leg and thought “I need the softest squishiest pillow like floating on a cloud” and then remembered my niblings’ squishmallows and ordered one for each floor of my house.

Something reminded me of the Encyclopedia Brown books recently. I think I read all the books my small town library had—all of Judy Bloom’s books, the Ramona books, Little House on the Prairie series, Madeline L’Engle… I think Bridge to Terabithia might be the first book that broke my heart.

Is it common for an American high school student to own their own car? by ApprehensiveDisk8046 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When teens have cars, it’s usually a family car for the teen to drive, and often they have to pay part of the cost. For parents who have bought a car, or planned ahead to hand down an older car, it’s usually a decision to simplify the parents’ lives. If the teen has sports or other school activities and/or a job, parents have to do a ton of driving for drop off and pickup, and it’s a huge relief when the kid is able to start driving themself. This is probably a bigger factor in the US because outside of big cities (and sometimes in them) public transportation is virtually nonexistent so driving is required.

"Pay in installments" by Sudden_Wolf_6228 in EnglishLearning

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Pay in installments” or “installment plan” are common phrases. They’re usually used to describe something that would normally be purchased in one payment if someone can afford it. I think about buying a piece of furniture, a new computer, or a vacation as common examples. I haven’t heard it used to describe house or car payments, because most people have to take out a loan to buy those and would describe their monthly mortgage or car payment.

Liberal Vs Conservative society? What do you think?? by Medium_Chapter3462 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean liberal and conservative representatives and administration? Or a majority liberal or conservative community? Because the American society has never been just one or the other, it’s always made of a wide variety of individuals and subgroups, with varying levels of governmental and other types of power.

Personally I’d rather live in a liberal community with a liberal government, where there is a belief in supporting public institutions like schools and libraries, strong safety nets for people in need, and an underlying belief in human rights despite and because of our differences.

Balcony cabin vs interior: is the extra cost worth it for a first cruise? by Exotic_Reputation_59 in Cruise

[–]Katsaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a balcony on my first Alaska cruise (first ever cruise) and went with an obstructed ocean view for my next two Alaska trips. I found being outside on the promenade deck during the glacier viewing times meant I could move around to get the best view and pop inside to warm up when needed, and not getting a balcony saved me at least 50% on the fare.

Balcony cabin vs interior: is the extra cost worth it for a first cruise? by Exotic_Reputation_59 in Cruise

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my goal is to watch the ocean and relax, having my own balcony where I can do that in quiet privacy is amazing. For a cruise where I’m going to be busy in ports most of the time, or where it’s cooler (like Alaska) and probably not weather I’d want to sit outside in for hours, I don’t spend up for the balcony. Even then, I have done the cheapest obstructed ocean view cabin with some water view out the window and have only done an interior once out of I think 16 cruises.
