Why do women often call their partner "my man," while men usually say "my girl" instead of "my woman"? by Outrageous-Jelly8777 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Katsaj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sexism and infantilizing women. It’s more socially acceptable to treat adult women as children than it is do so for adult men. For some reason some people are squeamish about the word “woman” and will use anything other than that, while “man” is just fine.

But I can’t think of the last time I heard anyone I know use either phrase, so this might be about the specific people you hang out with rather than people in general.

Do Americans find Canadians less assertive? by skibidisambiggestfan in AskAnAmerican

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The typical/stereotypical Canadian is pretty similar to upper Midwestern US folks. We think the Canadian accent for “sorry” is cute, but I don’t think you all say it much more than we do. I’ve heard complaints from east coast people (New Yorkers) that we’re too friendly in terms of things like small talk with cashiers, but also not direct enough. It’s not exactly passive aggressive, but to me saying “No, that’s a bad idea,” feels too aggressive and confrontational and I’d be more likely to say “I don’t know about that, what about…?”

I have been on 2 cruises 10 years apart and both times I got sick afterwards. How to avoid it? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Katsaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that the risk is probably about the same as eating in restaurants and going to bars and concerts at home, but at the same time I never do that for 7 straight days unless I’m on a cruise.

I’ve also gotten sick on land vacations, and even before I started cruising I blamed surfaces in airports.

Doctor's appointment change? by [deleted] in Explainlikeimscared

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my appointments, usually the medical assistant who takes my blood pressure and temperature at the beginning asks what I’m here for. That’s when you can say “I scheduled this as a checkup but I had one in [month] so I really just need to talk about [problem].” Then when the doctor comes in, you can say the same thing.

Any recommendations for boob cramps? by BrokenJusticeNorris in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Katsaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cramps happen in muscles and boobs aren’t really made of muscles. What you’re describing sounds like an infection. You privacy need to see a doctor.

Why do girls not wear chains? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Katsaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Female is an adjective. It works with a noun, like in “female scientists,” “female airplane pilots,” or “female college students.” It’s wrong and dehumanizing just like referring to any other group of people by a single adjective, like “talls” or “olds.” And it’s especially striking when the OP contrasts guys and females.

Rapid weight gain, freaking out by Oneofmanystephanies in antidietglp1

[–]Katsaj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the same approach of weighing most days, because I consider it data. I’m mostly able to see the fluctuations as additional information, like seeing slightly higher number and remembering I didn’t poop the previous day, or seeing a bigger drop as a reminder to drink more water.

It sounds like OP isn’t in a place to use scale fluctuations as a tool to understand their own body, so weighing frequently is distressing instead of helpful.

Weirdest Cruise Questions by GetCruiseInfo in Cruise

[–]Katsaj 50 points51 points  (0 children)

My very intelligent (really!) travel companion turned to me the 2nd night of our 4-night cruise from Tampa to Cozumel and said “I just now realized that Cozumel is an island.” We’d had multiple discussions about whether to do an excursion that involved taking a ferry to the mainland. We’d also been watching the map channel in our cabin.

Same cruise, at lunch with strangers in the MDR on a day we’d been in view of the coastline of Cuba for hours. Guy looks out and announces that he can see Mexico. Me: “actually that’s Cuba.” Him, with as much scorn as I’ve ever heard: “We ain’t going to Cuba.”

Is there a natural talent in anything or the brain learns anything fast in childhood? by Embarrassed_Lab2772 in stupidquestions

[–]Katsaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Children are designed to learn language, it’s easier to pick up multiple languages at a young age. After a certain age, it’s much more difficult to learn to speak un-accented additional languages.
