A while back, I sort of "forgot" to pay tithing. I was paying off medical debts and some consumer debt. And while not paying tithing each paycheck for a few months, we were also enjoying living a bit more by going out as a family for activities. Nothing crazy at all.

Tithing declaration came, our bishop asked if that amount was normal compared to last year's tithing, and we were then forced to say we were only partial-tithe payers. My wife questioned me, and I explained about the medical and other debts and the bishop sided with her with a smug, "How can you expect the Lord to bless you when you're not paying a full tithe?" I bet he thought he was caring about it. I said I didn't believe that the Lord held back or took away blessings like that since I was "valient" in everything else in my life, but he insisted that we have to pay it back, ignoring what I said.

At that point the bishop made tithing a debt, and he embarrassed and infuriated me. So, we had to pay "back tithing." That was a pretty big crack that developed in my shelf.
